Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide

Acclaim Extra is a selective post-emergence herbicide that controls annual and perennial grasses in turf. A systematic herbicide that works in a single treatment, Acclaim is one of the only post-emergence herbicides that can control crabgrass and goosegrass effectively with good tolerance on desirable turf. And it does so in a wide range of growth stages – from spikes to 5-tillers.

And it does so in a wide range of growth stages – from spikes to 5-tillers.

Acclaim Extra is absorbed primarily through foliage. It’s most effective during periods of active weed growth, and is rainfast about one hour after drying. Susceptible weeds stop growing, turn red or purple, then die within one week.

Please Note: Broadleaf herbicides such as 2,4-D or MCPP may reduce the effectiveness of Acclaim Extra Herbicide. Do not apply Acclaim Extra within 21 days following a 2,4-D or MCPP application, or 5 days before a 2,4-D or MCPP application.

5 of 5 stars  Only thing that got rid of Japanese Stiltgrass
By Lowell in Asheville, NC on 07/28/2012
    Verified Purchase

I tried other selective herbicides, adding surfactant, but only Acclaim got rid of most of the Japanese Stiltgrass invading my lawn. Only drawback is its price!! After doing some research, it seems this product is about all that really works for lawns to control this specific weed.

5 of 5 stars  Acclaim Extra works well to supress bermuda grass in fescue
By Charles in Mooresville on 06/25/2011
    Verified Purchase

This product works great to suppress Bermuda grass in my tall fescue lawn. I mix it with turflon ester, herbicide helper surfactant, and colorant. This is the third year of applications and I have seen quite a reduction in Bermuda grass, as well as immediate short term suppression after each application of which I make 3 or 4 during the growing season. DoMyOwnpestControl.com has the best price on this item I have found. I see a review that it did not work well in crabgrass and found the following information helpful for that issue. “For killing crabgrass well after it has germinated (e.g., Acclaim Extra), but they are effective only at killing young crabgrass plants. Because these young crabgrass plants are small, they are very difficult to detect in a lawn rendering post emergent herbicides far less useful than pre emergent herbicides for killing crabgrass (Beaulieu, 2011). Reference Beaulieu, D. (2011). How to Kill Crabgrass.

5 of 5 stars  Japanese Stiltgrass is now under control.
By Rick in Bluemont VA on 08/27/2012

Thanks to Acclaim! Roundup, which kills everything, was the only solution to rid Stiltgrass from my lawn. Two applications of Acclaim Extra Selective from a tank sprayer mixed with Adept surfactant are all that was needed…takes about 2 weeks to see results. Seems expensive but depending on the dilution 1 pint can make 80gal. 1 bottle should last me 3+ years.

5 of 5 stars  Great product! Kills Japanese Stilt grass.
By Scott in Baltimore, MD on 08/07/2014
    Verified Purchase

Acclaim killed all the Japanese Stilt grass that had invaded my lawn. Be patient though because it takes about 7-10 days to work. The leaves will begin to yellow after 5-7 days and then brown after 10-14 days. Definitely purchase the recommended Surfactant also. You will use less Acclaim and be able to treat your lawn much faster with better results. Acclaim also kills crab grass and seems to have thinned out some annual Bermuda grass that had invaded my lawn. Tip: I use a clear cough medicine measuring cup to measure out the recommended amount (.46oz=14ml) for my one gallon tank sprayer.

2 of 5 stars  Does not work that great
By Richard in Baltimore, MD on 08/15/2011

I purchased this thinking it wojuld be better than products I can get at Home depot. However, the Bayer All in One with Crabgrass control works better on Crabgrass. I also tried this on bermudagrass and it was completely ineffective. I have been following the directions to the letter and it just does not seem to work.

This is about the only stuff that will kill Japanese Stiltgrass in your lawn without harming the lawn. You won't see results for several days - keep the faith - but eventually the stiltgrass all turns brown.

  • 5 of 5 stars  Acclaim and Japanese stilt grass
By Peter in Montgomeryville, PA on 08/08/2017

So far, so good. This stuff kills this nasty Japanese Stiltgrass that seems to multiply over night in my lawn. It has been just a bit over 2 weeks and I just did a second application to get what I missed or what sprouted since the initial spray. I did end up using the surfactant, and you should, otherwise this stuff will just run off. Dye might have helped me track areas. I did this in a hand sprayer on my lawn in SE PA. I recommend you read up on stiltgrass, and then the Acclaim label so you know what you are doing.

  • 5 of 5 stars  So glad this is available online
By Brian in Pound Ridge on 08/08/2017

I spent $100 and 1 hour applying this. The lawn company said I needed 3 applications X $700 each = $2,100. Glad they can't hold me hostage anymore now that this is available online. Only problem was I used too low of a concentration on DialNSpray. I used 1Oz setting with half Acclaim and half surfactant. I'll try 3 Oz next week.

Oh dear! We are sorry to hear the Acclaim did not work up to your expectations. Herbicides work well when used under optimal conditions but there are some environmental conditions that can diminish the efficacy of the products such heat or drought stressed weeds, recently mown weeds, etc. Please give our customer care team a call so we can help you troubleshoot the issue and get the herbicide working up to its potential: 866-581-7378

5 of 5 stars  Effectively kills stiltgrass
By Rs in Phila, pa on 07/07/2015

Awesome. Surfactant and dye are highly recommend. This is expensive stuff so you want to SEE where you are laying it down as well as making sure it coats rather than bead off the leaves. the blue dye gives a nice but subtle contrast. As always, wear a mask that will handle the vapor and latex/rubber gloves. Kill this crap before it takes over the forest and woods of the US.

    4 of 5 stars  Acclaim Extra/ Phenoxyprop-ethyl formulations
By Steve in Lodi on 10/15/2014

I have used this product with somewhat mixed success. As mentioned on label, it suppresses, but does not control bermuda. Suppression lasts anywhere from 3 months to 2 years. As commercial applicator, I have just begun using it on crabgrass. It seems to work a bit more consistently than Quinchlorac (Drive) based formulations and has less frequent side effect to fescue. For those of you who are not getting results from this product, note that a non ionic surfactant is listed for sale along with Acclaim. Use it. You might also go over how carefully you measured and applied product to lawn area. I figure application of 2 gallons of spray to 1000 sq ft. area at labeled rates. If you don't apply product at labeled rates and 2 gal/1000, it is not likely to work.

QHow much Acclaim Extra Selective herbicide do I need to use to make one gallon of finished solution?

AAccording to page 4 of the Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide product label "Hand-Held Sprayer Application for Spot Treatments: For hand-held pump-type sprayers, add 0.30 to 0.46 fluid ounce of Acclaim Extra Herbicide per gallon of water. Apply 0.30 fluid ounce per gallon of water when the grass weed is in the 1- to 4-leaf stage of growth. Apply 0.46 fluid ounce per gallon of water when the grass weed has 1 to 2 tillers. Spray target weeds thoroughly to the point of spray deposit runoff. Optimum results occur when spray coverage is thorough. The addition of a surfactant will improve coverage. A dye or colorant may be added to avoid spray pattern overlap." QDoes Acclaim kill Bermuda grass without killing the Fescue around it? What is the spread rate?

AAcclaim Extra Herbicide will suppress the growth of common Bermudagrass and rhizome Johnsongrass. Apply Acclaim Extra Herbicide at 20 fluid ounces per acre (0.46 fluid ounce/1000 sq. ft.) as soon as common Bermudagrass or rhizome Johnsongrass begins growth. Repeat applications of Acclaim Extra every 28 to 35 days to continue growth suppression of these species. Do not apply more than a total of 120 fluid ounces per acre (2.75 fluid ounces/1000 sq.ft.) per growing season

QWhat temperature is best to apply Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide?
The label fails to adequately address temp conditions, but I did read 2 replies that state 55 low and 85 high. However, Maryland weather is extreme in varience, especially during March. For example, we've had anywhere from 78 degrees to 20's over the last month. Thus, weeds are in full growth, but night temps dip as low as 30 for the last 2 weeks. Snow this week in forecast. I have a beautiful green lawn (new from seeding in fall with regenerate) and also full of crazy weeds! So, when do I apply if overnight temps dip below 55?

A

Generally you would apply a post emergent herbicide like Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide when the weeds are actively growing and healthy, meaning not drought or heat stressed.

It would be best to call your local county extension office for when to apply any type of herbicides or insecticides in your area.  They would know better than we would since we are not the manufacturer and we live in Georgia.  They will know exactly when you should apply it in your specific county.

You can find your local county extension office information here.

QCan Acclaim Extra be applied in Spring when fescue seed is sprouting?

A

You should not apply Acclaim Extra Herbicide to seedling fine or tall fescue grass that is less than 4 weeks old, per the product label. You may overseed with fescue or ryegrass immediately following Acclaim Extra applications.

QWill Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide kill Bermuda grass in a Zoysia lawn without damaging the lawn?

A

Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide is labeled for bermuda grass suppression, and would not hurt a Zoysia Lawn. Unfortunately, there is no herbicide that will completely kill bermuda grass in a lawn. However, you can use a product like Acclaim that when used multiple times can supress the bermuda enough to allow the other healthy turf in the area to fill in and literally smother it out eventually.  Please be aware that if you have lawns on either side of yours that either contain bermuda or are all bermuda the potential for that grass to re-invade is there.

QShould I apply Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide for crabgrass when the lawn is wet or dry?
Going to spot spray the lawn with a backpack sprayer for crabgrass using .04 oz per gallon for the back pack sprayer, does the lawn have to be wet or dry when I spray the lawn is the question? Location is Long Island, NY

A

The grass should not be drenched or heavily wet before an application of Acclaim Extra Selective Herbicide to help the product contact the leave surface.  You should use a surfactant like the Non Ionic Surfactant for Herbicides with Acclaim to aid in penetration as directed on the product label.
