    Q
How often or when does the Advance Monitoring base need to be replaced?
And also how long for the monitoring base?
    A
The monitoring base and the monitoring cartridge in the Advance Termite Baiting System will only work if they are not moldy and water logged.  Installing the stations properly with room beneath them for water to drain will ensure you get the longest life out of the wood and monitoring cartridge as possible.  For the most part though, you should replace all of the wood bases and monitoring cartridges at least once a year.  Depending on the weather and amount of rain, you may have to replace them more than once if they need it.  Termites like moisture, but they do not like to swim, and they will not go into the station if the wood base is too moldy and decomposed.

    Q
Why are Advance Termite Bait Stations restricted in NY?
    A
New York is one of the nation's most restrictive state when it comes to allowing homeowners to treat their own pest and termite issues.  The state government heavily regulates professional-grade products.  Advance Termite Bait Stations are ok in most other states.

    Q
What is the perfect hole size, width and depth, to dig if I want to purchase an auger for the Advance Termite Bait Stations (TBS) - 10 stations?
I was lookin at one 3" X 12" but if you would suggest a different size I would be glad to know. I plan on purchasing the 15 Station kit from you.
    A

The Advance Termite Bait Station is a little over 7 inches tall and 5.90 wide. Stations are placed 10-15 feet apart, 2-4 feet away from the foundation around the structure to be treated to monitor subterranean termite activity, but not directly under the drip line from the roof of the structure. To dig holes for the stations, use a 2 ¾ in. hand or electric auger or post hole digger. The cavity for each station should extend 2 to 4 in. below the station's housing to allow excess moisture to drain.

    Q
What's to keep the termites from getting to the house in between the bait station?
    A
When termites are foraging for food they will look for the easiest to get to food first.  This would be any wood in the ground, and the stations do a great job of allowing the termites to find them.  However, it is always possible that termites can go in between two stations.  No termite treatment is 100% guaranteed to prevent termites from your home because there are so many ways that termites can get into your home.  To maximize your protection, you should either move the stations no more than 10 feet apart, or the best option is to put a liquid barrier treatment around your home and have the termite bait stations supplement your protection.  We have an article that you can read on "How To Do A Termite Treatment".

    Q
Regarding the Advance Termite Bait System
If I bought it now, should I install it in the Fall, or wait until Spring? If I install them in the fall, they will have time to "settle in" to the surrounding, but they will be exposed to elements longer, get wet, wood breakdown, require cleanout sooner, etc. What do you think?
    A
The best time to treat for termties is after the winter in the spring. That is because it is easiest to install the Advance Termite Bait Stations or apply a termiticide when the ground is softer than when the ground is frozen. Also, peak activity usually starts right as the winter is ending and into the spring. It really depends on your location. Also depending on the amount precipitation can cause the wood base to get soggy or moldy quicker and need replacing.

    Q
Why does the Advance Termite Bait Stations need to be kept a couple of feet away from the house?
It seems like it would be best protected from flooding if it is inside of the drip line, instead of outside of it.
    A

Advance Termite Bait Stations can be placed inside or outside the roof line of a house depending on how far from the house it goes.  You just want to be sure to not place the stations directly underneath where it could get runoff.  The cavity for each station should extend 2 to 4 in. below the station's housing to allow excess moisture to drain.

    Q
What is the difference between the Trelona Termite Bait System and the Advance Termite Bait System? Are these just for monitoring or do they come with bait? Which Termite Bait System is best and why?
    A

Trelona ATBS Annual Monitoring Stations come pre loaded with 2 bait cartridges which eliminates the quarterly monitoring.  You would need to replace the bait annually due to environmental conditions.

The Advance Termite Bait System comes with each station loaded with a wood base and a Termite Inspection Cartridge and you must monitor these stations quarterly.  If you see termite activity in one of the stations, then you would remove the Termite Inspection Cartridge and replace it with a bait cartridge. Termites would typically only hit one or maybe 2 stations at a time, so the 6 bait cartridges that come with your system could last you for years.  You would need to replace the wood bases and Termite Inspection Cartridges every 12 months for best results. Wood that is soggy or moldy should be replaced as soon as possible.

    Q
Will the termite bait in the Advance Termite Bait Stations kill the queen and eliminate the colony?
    A

No, the Advance Termite Bait Stations are used to primarily to detect and treat for termites before they reach the home. These stations contain an inspection cartridge and wood monitoring base. When active termites are found in the inspection cartridge, you would remove the inspection cartridge and replace with a Trelona Compressed Bait Cartridge.Once termites have reached the home, termite bait systems will not be effective to treat the termite colony.

Please view our How to Use the Advanced Termite Bait System video for a quick tutorial on how to use the bait stations.

The most effective treatment for Subterranean Termites is by using Taurus SC as trench treatment around the exterior perimeter foundation of the home. The barrier treatment will eradicate a termite colony within 90 days and last for 10 years in the soil against future termites.

Please view our How to Get Rid of Subterranean Termite Guide for step by step instructions on how to do this process.
