Michael from West Chester, Pa writes

Am I using the proper Rodent Bait and how to tell if it's working?

Recently moved into a new home. Determined there was a field mouse (basement and exterior verified by trapping), house mouse (basement and exterior verified by trapping), and roof rat problem (exterior burrows and trapping). I purchased 24 mouse bait stations and four rat bait stations. I also purchased Contrac Blox and Final. (all from your company). I've been checking/replacing the bait every 4-6 days. Three days ago, when checking the stations every single station (28 in total) was hit hard. I have yet to see any bodies outside the home after about a month of pretty consistent hits. Should I consider Fastrac? Could an entire population be anticoagulant resistant?

Answer:

The Contrac and Final blox work similarly in controlling the population and will deliver a kill to each rat/mouse that has consumed a lethal dose within 5 days. It can take multiple feedings of these baits for the rodents to get a lethal dose so it could take a least a week after you see bait missing before they die. Also, just because you aren't seeing dead bodies doesn't mean the rodents aren't dieing. They wont always die out in the open and could die in wall voids of your home, or back in their burrows where they might retreat as they are feeling weak and vulnerable. Depending on how quickly they are reproducing, and how large the population of rodents was to start with, will depend on how quickly you will get rid of all of them. Make sure you continue to refill the stations as you see the bait running low, as well as close up all holes around the home to keep any rodents from continuing to come in. If you are looking to get a quicker kill you could swap to the Fastrac to make sure they are not reproducing just as quickly as you are killing them.
