Sugar ants are actually any species of small house invading ants, like Argentine ants, pavement ants, odorous house ants, pharaoh ants, etc. These ants usually nest outdoors and travel indoors to forage for food and bring it back to the colony, while leaving a trail to alert other foraging ants of the new found food source.
Most ants switch between desired food sources. They go through phases of protein feeding, fat feeding, and sugar/carbohydrate feeding. Sugar ants simply ants that are in their sugar feeding phase and will be much more attracted to this type of food source.
Sugar ant control involves baiting. Ant baits are the best tool you can use to get rid of sugar ants (or any ant), but to make sure your ants are truly interested in sugar food sources, try the honey and peanut butter test. Place a note card or piece of paper with honey on one side of the paper and peanut butter on the other in areas ants are often seen trailing or feeding. Monitor which side of the card the ants are more interested in, and then choose the appropriate bait. Sugar ants will be zeroing in on the honey side, and you can then bait your home with sugar baits.
