Bed Bug Beacon Monitor for Bed Bugs

The Bed Bug Beacon Monitor is best used in unoccupied rooms. While it can be used in occupied rooms as well, the results may not be as quick or as accurate when competition (your breathing and body heat) is in the room. All two weeks of the CO2 solution should be used to make a determination if a room has a bed bug issue or not.

The new product called the Bed Bug Beacon, manufactured by the same company that brought us the PackTite Bed Bug Heater, is one of our professional grade bed bug traps that harnesses the attractive power of carbon dioxide to monitor and trap bed bugs during an infestation. The unit relies on proven studies that have shown that bed bugs use the carbon dioxide we exhale while breathing to locate us for their next blood meal. Carbon Dioxide, illustrated in the video below, instantly re-activates inactivate bed bugs and draws the bugs towards the trail of CO2.

The Bed Bug Beacon comes with everything you need to monitor for bed bugs. Two packs of powder are combined in the bottle that is provided with luke warm water which will produce CO2 for 5 to 6 days. Bed bugs are attracted to the emittance of CO2 and are trapped in the pitfall device so you can physically test and monitor for the presence of Bed Bugs. 2 to 3 traps are recommended for larger rooms and bed rooms. The Bed Bug beacon comes with enough CO2 for 11 days. Beacon refills can be purchased separately which will provide an additional 3 weeks of CO2.

How The Bed Bug Beacon Monitor Works

The new product called the Bed Bug Beacon, manufactured by the same company that brought us the PackTite Bed Bug Heater, harnesses the attractive power of carbon dioxide to monitor and trap bed bugs during an infestation.

When mixed with warm water, the included packets create a steady stream of carbon dioxide in the chamber (bottle). The gas is then released through the tube and out at the pitfall trap, which bed bugs can easily climb into but cannot escape.

The Bed Bug Beacon should be used in unoccupied rooms only, as the CO2 production from the device may not effectively compete with amounts produced by a human.

Target Uses of Bed Bug Beacon Monitor for Bed Bugs

Use the Bed Bug Beacon in any unoccupied rooms where bed bug activity is suspected. This may be especially useful in unused bedrooms in homes, in apartment buildings, and in hotels. Larger rooms will require multiple units, and the Beacon should be placed close to suspected areas of infestation, such as along baseboards and in corners. The monitor should be used for at least 11 days for best results.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Mixing packets create CO2. No insecticidal ingredients.

Application Instructions

Always read the product label completely before use.

Mixing:

1. Remove all contents from box.

2. Remove cap from CO2 PRODUCTION CHAMBER (bottle).

3. Add contents of one CO2 MIX A packet.

4. Add contents of one CO2 MIX B packet.

5. Add lukewarm water (68-86 °F/20-30 °C) to the level line.

6. Replace cap and swirl gently for 30 seconds.

Assembly:

1. Remove roof of pitfall monitor. Unscrew dropper bottle lid. Squeeze 3 drops of oil into bottom of the well. Replace the monitor lid over the well.

2. Slide one end of the CO2-resistant tubing firmly over spout on lid of CO2 PRODUCTION CHAMBER. NOTE: Slide end of tube past the first line on the spout. If necessary, soften the tubing by holding it under hot water for 15 seconds.

3. Insert the other end of tubing into the hole in the pitfall monitor lid. The end of the tubing should protrude no more than 1/2 inch into the hole in the lid.

Placement:

1. Place CO2 PRODUCTION CHAMBER on floor or on flat level surface in the area to be monitored.

2. Place pitfall monitor close to any known bedbug harborage or areas likely to have bedbug activity (baseboards, furniture, mattress, headboard, etc.).

NOTE: Three Bedbug Beacon monitors are suggested for a standard room (16 ft. x 16 ft.).

3. Check the monitor at convenient intervals. (The Bedbug Beacon system is designed to produce carbon dioxide for at least 5 days).

4. When the solution in the CO2 PRODUCTION CHAMBER turns from a milky color to clear and bubbles are no longer visible (usually after 5 days), test the CO2 production by removing the tubing from the lid of the pitfall trap and submerging it in a glass of water. If no bubbles are observed, rinse the CO2 PRODUCTION CHAMBER and follow MIXING instructions (above) using fresh CO2 MIX (A and B) packets.

5. After monitoring is complete, disassemble and clean the apparatus.

Each Bed Bug Beacon kit includes all required materials except water. Two sets of CO2 packets are included to produce a total of approximately 11 days of monitoring. Most rooms will require multiple Bed Bug Beacons for best results.

Standard Application Rates

*Use 3 bedbug beacons for a room 16 ft. x 16 ft.

*Each mixture products CO2 for at least 5 days.

For use in the following areas:

Residential and commercial areas where bed bugs are suspected

Indoors-

Use in rooms where bed bug activity has been observed or is suspected. The Bed Bug Beacon is most effective when used in unoccupied rooms so that human-created heat and CO2 does not compete with the trap.

Outdoors-

Do not use the Bed Bug Beacon outdoors.

1 of 5 Stars  Beacon Monitor
By Jennifer on March 12, 2011

I haven't caught anything.  Sat it in child's room, went away for the day, shut up house, didn't have anything in it.  Have been following instructions but nothing.  I do have an infestation of bugs but I just got a hand held steamer and are eliminating them myself that way. I think I wasted my money on this, doesn't work.

5 of 5 Stars  Bed Bug Beacon Works Well
By Debra on September 24, 2010

After treating my apartment and getting rid of lots of furniture. I felt the bed bug problem was over. I tested my feeling using this product in two places in my apartment and there were no bed bugs in the device during the time I had it in place - over 10 days in both places. This product helped me understand that the bedbug problem is gone.

3 of 5 Stars  Unsure if this is useful

I used this for 2 weeks and did not catch anything. It's uncertain whether the device did not work or that my previous efforts to eradicate the bugs were just that effective.

5 of 5 Stars  Invaluable To Me
By Rachel on April 22, 2013

I had a very thorough professional extermination for bedbugs some months back. I was complaining to the exterminator that I was still having some skin reactions that I found troubling. I was told that I was being paranoid. I went on for months spraying myself because I wasn't convinced they were gone. Using this product I was able to catch two bugs in the second week of monitoring rooms I had vacated for this test. Thanks to this product I knew I still had a problem and was able to get a whole house thermal treatment. Unfortunately the first thermal treatment was not fully effective as I set these monitors up right afterwards and caught two bugs after one week. With the Bed Bug Beacon I have had no issues claiming my 30 day guarantee on the second treatment because I have proof. I also have a better idea of where my problem areas are and have directed my current pest control company to treat these places directly. I will continue to use this product until I know my infestation is gone and I would recommend them to anyone who is concerned that they may have a bed bug problem.

September 2, 2010Paul asked:

QWill the Bedbug Beacon let me know if I have bed bugs?
I am not sure if I have bed bugs. I have not yet been bit, but I have found two very small black things on my mattress that may have been bugs. If I place the monitor in my bedroom and I do have bedbugs, will I see them dead in it?

AThe Bedbug Beacon Monitor works best in unoccupied rooms. The Bedbug Beacon Monitor will attract bedbugs that are ready to feed by omitting CO2. The insects will then crawl into the trap and fall into the "pit". Falling into the pit will not actually kill the bugs. If you are not sure if your home is infested and it is occupied you may want to consider having a professional pest control operator inspect the rooms that you suspect may have bedbugs.

September 2, 2010Bill asked:

QShould I use the Beacon Monitor to trap bed bugs as part of treatment, or is this used only for monitoring?

AThe Bed Bug Beacon Monitor is really just that, a monitor. This device should be used to monitor unoccupied rooms to see if there is bedbug activity. We do offer other bed bug treatment products on our site, including our Bed Bug Kits.

September 2, 2010Kelly asked:

QHow do the bedbugs get into the Bedbug Beacon?
I have read the instructions and watched the video but I am not sure how the bugs get into the traps. Are there holes?

AThere are two dishes stacked together that are slightly different sizes. The bedbugs crawl up the crevice between the two dishes and fall down into the "pit"
