How Bifen IT Works

Bifen IT is a liquid concentrate insecticide that contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Bifen IT does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Bifen IT is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Bifen IT will be most effective as a barrier for target pests with a thorough application.

Bifen IT Target Pests

Bifen IT is very effective on Japanese Beetles, clover mites, ants, termites, fleas, ticks, spiders, scorpions, roaches, millipedes, earwigs, army worms, mealybugs, mites, grasshoppers, pillbugs, cutworms, sod webworms, weevils, leaf miners, box elder bugs, bees, wasps, sowbugs, crickets, and turf and ornamental pests. Bifen IT even has an expanded label to include control of stink bugs indoors and outdoors.

PESTS CONTROLLED WITH BIFEN IT: adelgids, American dog ticks, annual bluegrass weevils, ants, aphids, armyworms, bagworms, banks grass mites, bed bugs (not in residential areas), bees, beet armyworms, beetles, billbugs, biting flies, black turfgrass ataenius, black vine weevils, boxelder bugs, broad mites, brown soft scales, budworms, California red scale centipedes, carpet beetles, carpenter ants, centipedes, chiggers, chinch bugs, cicadas, citrus thrips, clothes moths, clover mites, cockroaches, crane flies, crickets, cutworms, deer ticks, diaprepes, dichondra flea beetles, earwigs, elm leaf beetles, European red mites, fall webworms, filth-breeding flies, firebrats, fleas, flea beetles, flies, fungus gnats, gnats, grasshoppers, gypsy moth caterpillars, hide beetles, hornets, imported fire ants, Japanese beetles, lace bugs, leaf feeding caterpillars, leafhoppers, leafminers, leafrollers, litter beetles, mealybugs, midges, millipedes, mites, mole crickets, mosquitoes, moths, orchid weevils, pecan leaf scorch mite, pillbugs, pine needle scales, pine shoot beetle, plant bugs, psyllids, roaches, San Jose scales, scorpions, silverfish, sod webworms, sow bugs, spiders (including black widow spiders), spider mites, spittlebugs, springtails, stink bugs, subterranean termites (genera Reticulitermes, Zootermopsis, Coptotermes and Heterotermes), tent caterpillars, thrips, ticks, tip moths, treehoppers, twig borers, wasps, weevils, whiteflies, wood-infesting beetles (including but not limited to old house borers and powder post), yellow jackets

Target Uses of Bifen IT

Talstar One, Bifen I/T and other Bifenthrin generics control over 75 common insect pests, including termites. Bifen can be used as an indoor and outdoor pest control, turf and ornamental application, and for treating pests in food-handling areas. Both Talstar One and Bifen I/T contain microcrystals that do not break down easily with rain once they bond to surfaces. Both Talstar One and Bifen IT are clear substances that leave no stains on painted surfaces. Bifen IT can last up to 6 months outside. See below for list of approved usage sites.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Bifenthrin - 7.9% synthetic pyrethroid.

Bifen IT Application Instructions

Best applied with a 1 gallon sprayer. Apply to outside foundation and all entry points such as around windows, doors, etc. Always read the label completely before use.

1 bottle (4 oz.) concentrate yields 4-8 gallons of finished solution.

1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.

1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.

¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.

1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-384 gallons of finished solution.

Standard Application Dilution rates / Mixing Ratios for Bifen IT

0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions

0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use

1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown

1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer

*See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a Chapin Premier 1 gallon sprayer.

Bifen IT is for use in the following areas:

In and around such areas as homes, commercial and industrial buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields, lawns and ornamentals; livestock and poultry houses; gardens, parks, lawns, grounds and other ornamental sites; flowers, foliage pants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, shrubs, ornamental trees; interior and exterior plantscapes such as those in hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, etc.; both food/feed and nonfood areas of food/feed handling establishments; aircraft (excluding cabins), apartments, bakeries, bottling facilities, breweries, buses, cafeterias, candy plants, canneries, dairy product processing plants, food manufacturing plants, food processing plants, food service establishments, granaries, grain mills, hospitals, hotels, industrial buildings, laboratories, meat/poultry/egg processing plants, mobile/motor homes, nursing homes, offices, railcars, restaurants, schools, ships, trailers, trucks, vessels, warehouses, wineries

Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.

Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.

  • Do not use as a space spray.
  • Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.
  • Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days and only if there are signs of renewed insect activity.

*Bifen IT may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.

*Bifen IT is NOT labeled for control of bedbugs in residential or commercial areas except for in livestock and poultry housing structures.

General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 to 1 oz. of Bifen IT in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Bifen IT once every 3 months.

Mosquitoes - To control mosquitoes around buildings, landscapes, and lawns, dilute 0.33 to 1.0 fl. oz. per gallon of water and use one gallon of dilution per 1000 square feet as a general spray. Bifen IT can be mixed at lower concentrations and applied at higher volumes to ensure application of the proper amount of product to a given area.

Bagworms - Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. For optimum control treat when larvae have started to hatch and are young, directing spray to contact as many larvae as possible.

Chinch Bugs – Use 0.25 to 0.5 oz. per 1,000 square feet. In order to optimize the penetration of the insecticide to location of the chinch bugs, irrigation of the grass prior to treatment may be necessary.  If grass is being kept at a long mowing height or if the thatch layer is excessive, use higher volume treatments. It may be necessary to use higher application rates (up to 1 fl. oz. per 1,000 square feet) to control populations made up of both adults and nymphs in mid-summer.

Lawn applications – A hose end sprayer, such as the Chapin hose end sprayer, may be used to apply Bifen IT for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.

Termite Applications- Bifen IT may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Bifen IT to control subterranean termites.

    5 of 5 Stars  It's amazing!
By Nick on October 9, 2008

I bought Bifen IT because I saw it so highly recommended on this website. I had seen at least one cockroach each day since moving into our new house, so I knew that it needed spraying. The instructions for the Bifen IT product were clear and easy to understand. I also got a 2-gallon sprayer to use, and it worked really well. I sprayed around the foundation up to 3 feet and about 2 feet away from the house, along with any other cracks and crevices around doors, etc. I haven't seen any cockroaches in the 6 weeks since I sprayed. It's amazing! I did find a dead one outside the house around the perimeter of the porch. This stuff really works. For the price, it's a bargain, and you can save yourself a lot of money by taking the hour or so to completely do your house. I plan on re-spraying every 3 months to keep the bugs out. If you're looking for a good deal on pest control, do it yourself with Bifen IT. I also had some questions about how to use it and the customer support people here on the site were very prompt and helpful.

5 of 5 Stars  Outstanding results on spiders, mosquitos, ants, fleas/ticks
By Charles in West, TX on June 18, 2010

I own a campground in Texas, and I have been using Bifen IT for several years. I mix 1 ounce of Bifen IT per gallon of water and spray a fine mist on the lower branches of the trees in the campground (up to 6 feet off the ground). The mist that does not land on the tree branches falls to the ground, so I don't have to spray the ground. I treat the campground once every 6 months, and I have absolutely no problems with any insect. It kills mosquitos and ants almost immediately upon contact, and it takes about 30 seconds to kill spiders. When spiders are sprayed, they usually remain still for 15 seconds. Then they begin to feel the effects of the insecticide and their legs start moving frantically back and forth. At the end of 30 seconds the spider is dead. I'm not talking about little spiders. The spiders we have around here have bodies the size of a golf ball. By the way, I should mention that I add 1/4 cup of Dawn liquid dishwashing soap to 15 gallons of mixed insecticide. The liquid soap helps the insecticide stick to the foliage. Excellent product!

5 of 5 Stars  "Secret" solution
By Sharon on February 21, 2008
    Verified Purchase

I live in South Florida and about 4 years ago I noticed a 'new' variety of ant which came in fast and furious. The first year wasn't terribly bad but the second year they had multiplied 5x in numbers. I saw a pest control truck at a neighbors house and asked the guy what he knew about this new ant. He called it the "Caribbean Crazy Ant" (I looked it up on the Internet and sure enough, that was the 'new' ant). He told me that he could control this ant with a "secret" solution, and by the third year I called him for help. I live on a 1.3 acre landscaped lot with many trees, bushes, plants. He sprayed my yard and all the foliage for $200. I guess he thought that I would not attempt to spray this huge yard myself so he actually divulged his "secret" solution. He told me he used Talstar. So back to the Internet I went and found the generic Bifen IT brand. I ordered it and sprayed my own yard the next year for less than $30. The ants stayed away from my house and I will use this product each and every spring from this point on! BTW: of course, not only did it control the crazy ants, it has kept all other pests away as well!

5 of 5 Stars  Great stuff
By Butch in South Jersey on June 22, 2009

I like this better than Malathion and Sevin. I spray our lawn, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, rain gutters, under our deck and foundation with Bifen IT. I'm on a wooded acre and spray as much of my property as I can. I give everything a good wet spray with a hose end sprayer which offers more coverage than a tank sprayer. I spray a few days after a rain when everything is dried out. I've always thought that the rain and moisture breeds mosquitoes so that is a good time to spray them. There is no odor. But it's the insect protection that is fantastic. We spend a lot of time outside in the yard and gardens. We also spend a lot of time on our back deck at night. In the past it would be unbearable. This stuff kills bugs dead and keeps killing which seems like weeks at a time. Pesky mosquitoes and gnats are history. If you wanna be able to spend time outside and those flying insects are a problem then this is the stuff you need. I just hope the state doesn't outlaw it.

5 of 5 Stars  Extremely effective
By Scott on June 15, 2008

I use Bifen IT to control fleas outside where my cat hangs out (front porch and adjacent yard area). It has proven to be extremely effective when applied every 3 to 4 months during the spring and summer. I highly recommend this product.

  • 5 of 5 Stars  Awesome!
By Jeremy in Thief River Falls, MN on June 12, 2015

I'd like to preface this by saying I very rarely write a review about anything, but I feel compelled after using this for about 2 years now. It absolutely demolishes the mosquito and woodtick population. I live in northern MN. I have about 2.5 acres of "yard" and mix 1/2 to 3/4 oz/gallon in my ATV sprayer. I broadcast spray the yard and then go around the perimeter with the wand. Reduces the mosquito population by 95% or more when mixed 1/2 oz/gallon and sprayed at 5 mph with 14 ft swath. I imagine I could achieve 99%-100% if I applied a greater concentration/acre. I've worked all day in the yard with zero ticks and mosquitoes, then spent the next day working in the tall grass where I didn't spray, and found myself covered in ticks and swatting mosquitoes all day. Impressively effective.

5 of 5 Stars  Love this stuff
By Phil in Marietta GA on June 10, 2015

Since using Bifen IT (and canceling my quarterly pest treatment service) my house is virtually pest free (well - if you don't count the kids and the dog...). A barrier around the house is all you need plus a few squirts around the inside where pipes come in through walls or where you've spotted insect activity. The only bugs I see now are either dead or dying. Highly recommend doing it on your own. Saves a ton of money and seems to me to be more effective.

  • 5 of 5 Stars  Found the answer for yard ants/hills
By Gary in Bemidji, Min on June 9, 2015

I went around in circles with various types of yard/grass ants for a couple of years. I didn't mind the ants, it was the nest/hill they made and made and made! I used all of the store products for such an issue with minimal to no results. I used Max Force Insect granuals with a bit of success but it did kill some grass too. Finally I stumbled onto Bifen lt as I continued to fight the battle. Very happy with my initial results last year and I kept after the little buggers as I saw their hill. I did a more general spray on a larger area of grass when I saw several hills starting to appear. This year, I am thrilled (and a bit surprised) to report only a couple of little ant hills have appeared but nothing like before. I spray that hill and it eliminates that hill and don't see more hills appearing. We live in northern Mn with very sandy soil that ants love. This product has been a perfect answer, finally, to my frustrating ants in the yard/grass issue of the past. I use 1oz of Bifen to 1 gallon of water so application costs are very reasonable and simple with a hand held sprayer. I am not stupid but the included directions are confusing. The DoMyOwnPestControl company has been excellent. Thank you.

  • 5 of 5 Stars  Fantastic
By Gaye in Greenbush, MI on June 9, 2015

A friend turned us onto this product last year when he sprayed our yard before a big outdoor party. The mosquitoes were so bad before he sprayed they almost carried you away, after spraying not a bug to be found. Works great for ticks too. We spray our camping spots with it before we set up the trailer and it works perfect no flies, no ticks and no mosquitoes.

5 of 5 Stars  Pretty good for mosquito control
By Paul in Memphis, TN on April 22, 2015

I can't comment on how good this is for termites and other pests, but this worked very well for mosquito control last summer and fall in Memphis. I went 3 weeks of nearly zero bites before having to respray. Occasional rain didn't seem to lessen the effect, and it didn't stain or discolor my siding. Be sure to spray under leaves on bushes, soffits, fence boards, etc as mosquitoes like anywhere there is shade. The better the coverage, the less mosquitoes you'll see. Also, spray when the forecast calls for no rain for a couple days so the chemicals can set.

By Charles in Brandon, MS on March 22, 2015

We moved into a new home by some woods last year. The house had been empty for almost a year & lots of insects were around & inside the house. After the first application, what bugs were inside had died, and after spraying the yard & fence line, nothing has made it inside our house or garage! Not a spider, ant, or termite. We have 3 cats & a dog inside & Bifin is safe around them after it dries.

Most Helpful Q&A's

May 23, 2010 Bob asked:

QHow does Bifen IT compare to Bifen XTS and Permethrin for mosquito control?

ABifen I/T is our most popular choice for mosquito control.  The Bifen XTS is the same product, just in a higher concentration.  For mosquito control you do not need the higher concentration, it is not necessary.  Bifen I/T would also be a better solution then permethrin because permethrin breaks down quicker in sunlight and the Bifen I/T only needs to be applied every 30 days whereas permethrin would need to be applied every two weeks.  The most important thing to remember when treating for mosquitoes is that they hang out on the underside of leaves and shrubs.  You should treat all shrubs, bushes and trees around the outside patio or wherever you hang out at around the house.  You should also treat the tree line in your yard near the forest if one exists.  Remember to not only treat the main bush or shrub but also the underside of the leaves.

August 3, 2010 Jenny asked:

QIs Bifen IT safe for domestic pets?
I have three dogs, and I am scared to use chemicals.

ABifen IT is safely used in thousands of homes across the country everyday. Bifen IT is safe for use around pets when used according to the label. You should always keep children and pets away from the away while you are treating, and then once the treatment is dry it is perfectly safe to allow pets to re-enter the area

September 26, 2009 Howard asked:

QWhat type of weather should I put the Bifen IT out in? Rainy, cold, hot?

AAll of our liquid insecticides including Bifen IT should be applied in dry weather, not rainy weather.  All of the liquid insecticides are made to bond to dry surfaces and will last longer when applied when it is dry and not going to rain for at least 24 hours.  The temperature does not matter as much.  It can be applied in hot or cold weather, but it must be dry and not wet to work at its highest potential.

March 8, 2011 Linda asked:

QIs Bifenthrin good on active termite control?

ABifenthrin products used to be considered a good form of termite treatment, but bifenthrin acts as a repellent and now a days almost all professional termite companies are using non-repellents, such as Termidor SC or Dominion 2L.  We have a great article called How To Do A Termite Treatment that explains how to perform a treatment using a non-repellent termiticide.

July 29, 2009 Honey asked:

QCan Bifen IT be used inside and be effective for household pest control?
Everything I read pertained to spraying outside. We feed and protect birds and some other fun critters that I don't want to hurt such as chameleons, rabbits and other things that eat from the ground.

ABifen IT is considered a general use insecticide and is labeled for outside and inside use. It is odorless, and very safe to use around children or pets. The general rule is that while spraying you keep children or pets in another room or outside to play. After about one hour, it should be dry and it is perfectly safe to allow kids and/or pets back in the room. This product is only strong enough to kill tiny insects, and would have no effect on animals like rabbits, etc.

QI have an above ground pool with a deck around it and has become a breeding Mosquito.
There is a ditch around bottom of pool filled with leaves and is probably damp. Will the Bifen spray kill Mosquitos that may be breeding underneath the leaves?

A Bifen IT will only kill the mosquitoes that are sprayed directly or that contact a treated surface.  The best thing to do would be to try an eliminate the leaves and debri in the ditch to remove the breeding site for them and apply Bifen to the underside of leaves of trees and bushes as that is where the adults during the day.

June 18, 2015 Tim from New Lisbon asked:

QShould I spray Perimeter or whole lawn with Bifen IT?
I have been spraying the whole lawn in the past as well as the perimeter. Is it just as effective to spray only the perimeter or should one spray inside of that like on trees and shrubs? Can you please help me on this question

A Whether you should spray your whole lawn or just the perimeter with Bifen I/T or any other insecticide is entirely dependent on what pests you are primarily treating for. For example, if fleas, ants, chinch bugs or crickets are your main pests, we would suggest continuing to spray your whole lawn. If mosquitoes and flies are your main pests, then focusing your sprays on bushes, trees and areas of dense foliage would be best. But at any time if you feel it gives you better control over all the pests in your area to treat the whole yard then that is entirely up to you.

June 10, 2015 Phillip from Bridge City Texas asked:

QIn a 15 gal sprayer can I mix Bifen IT with a weed and feed and spray just once to save time and water?

A Yes you can mix Talstar with most weed and feeds successfully for the most part. Most weed and feeds will have a small section on doing a test "tank mix" so you can test to make sure the products will blend together without issue. We do recommend doing a test tank mix to be sure the products will mix together without separating.

QCan I mix and apply Bifen IT with my Weed n Feed to my yard at the same time?
I want to know if it is safe to mix Bifen IT with a weed and feed so that I can spray my yard for weeds and bugs in the same application.

A Bifen should be able to be mixed with your weed and feed. Be sure to test the mix by doing a tank mix before application.

Will it render them inedible? It wasnt sprayed on the plants but runoff did contact a few fruits on the bottom. Will the bifen be absorbed from the ground into the fruits? If so how large of an area should i consider whats planted there to be inedible?

A Bifen IT is NOT labeled to be used around any type of edibles. Anything that came in contact with the drip line should not be consumed.

Qrainfall after application
I just applied Biffen for mole crickets and it rained right after application. Do I need to reapply?

A Bifent IT is usually watered in after a mole cricket application so the rain most likely just aided you in your control efforts as the immature mole crickets are just under the soil. Info from the Bifen IT product label :To ensure control of sub  surface pests including

Mole Cricketsusing low volume treatments, (i.e. less than2 gallons per 1000 sq
uare feet), immediately follow the treatment with irrigation of the treated area with at
least 0.25 inches of water

QHow do I use a hose end sprayer to apply Bifen? At what rate do I apply? Where do I buy a hose end sprayer?
I have about 9,000 sq feet to apply. I don't want to under or over saturate, so I am confused on to use a hose end sprayer.

A Bifen IT should be mixed and applied at one ounce per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft. You will calibrate your hose end sprayer to disperse this amount.  You do not dilute the Bifen IT when putting it in the chamber on the hose end sprayer, you put the concentrate directly in the cannister and the tube automatically sucks up however much you have told it to on the dial and disperses it with each gallon that comes through the hose. The down side to using a hose end sprayer is it removes a lot of accuracy with your treatment and wont give you as thorough and even coverage as a hand pump or backpack sprayer would. Either sprayer you use, you will use 1 ounce per gallon of water. We carry a hose end sprayer and offer free shipping.

QIs Bifen safe for birds nesting in the infected tree?
I need to get rid of spittlebugs before they destoy the cypress tree, but I know there sre birds nesting inside. And birds often alite on the tree. Is this safe for birds? If not, can you recommend a product that is safe?

A Bifen IT is safe to apply if the birds are not in the area during application until the surfaces have completely dried. It should also not be applied directly on them or the nest. Once applied and dried it is safe for birds, squirrels, rabbits, pets, and family members to be in the area.
