Bifen IT

Bifen IT insecticide is comparable to the very popular Talstar. Bifen IT contains 7.9% bifenthrin which is an insecticide and termiticide that provides excellent control of over 75 insect pests, leaves a long-lasting residual for up to 3 months, is odorless, non-staining, dries clear and is safe around children and pets when used as directed. Bifen IT and the other bifenthrin products can be used both indoors and outdoors, on lawns and ornamentals, and even in food-handling areas of commercial establishments. One quart of Bifen IT insecticide yields 32-96 gallons. If you are looking for a low cost alternative to Talstar One, then look no further. Bifen I/T is tough on pests, but not on your wallet.

Product Documents

How Bifen IT Works

Bifen IT is a liquid concentrate insecticide that contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Bifen IT does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Bifen IT is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Bifen IT will be most effective as a barrier for target pests with a thorough application.

Target Insects

Bifen IT is very effective on Japanese Beetles, clover mites, ants, termites, fleas, ticks, spiders, scorpions, roaches, millipedes, earwigs, army worms, mealybugs, mites, grasshoppers, pillbugs, cutworms, sod webworms, weevils, leaf miners, box elder bugs, bees, wasps, sowbugs, crickets, and turf and ornamental pests. Bifen IT even has an expanded label to include control of stink bugs indoors and outdoors.

INSECTS CONTROLLED: adelgids, American dog ticks, annual bluegrass weevils, ants, aphids, armyworms, bagworms, banks grass mites, bed bugs (not in residential areas), bees, beet armyworms, beetles, billbugs, biting flies, black turfgrass ataenius, black vine weevils, boxelder bugs, broad mites, brown soft scales, budworms, California red scale centipedes, carpet beetles, carpenter ants, centipedes, chiggers, chinch bugs, cicadas, citrus thrips, clothes moths, clover mites, cockroaches, crane flies, crickets, cutworms, deer ticks, diaprepes, dichondra flea beetles, earwigs, elm leaf beetles, European red mites, fall webworms, filth-breeding flies, firebrats, fleas, flea beetles, flies, fungus gnats, gnats, grasshoppers, gypsy moth caterpillars, hide beetles, hornets, imported fire ants, Japanese beetles, lace bugs, leaf feeding caterpillars, leafhoppers, leafminers, leafrollers, litter beetles, mealybugs, midges, millipedes, mites, mole crickets, mosquitoes, moths, orchid weevils, pecan leaf scorch mite, pillbugs, pine needle scales, pine shoot beetle, plant bugs, psyllids, roaches, San Jose scales, scorpions, silverfish, sod webworms, sow bugs, spiders (including black widow spiders), spider mites, spittlebugs, springtails, stink bugs, subterranean termites (genera Reticulitermes, Zootermopsis, Coptotermes and Heterotermes), tent caterpillars, thrips, ticks, tip moths, treehoppers, twig borers, wasps, weevils, whiteflies, wood-infesting beetles (including but not limited to old house borers and powder post), yellow jackets

Target Uses

Talstar One, Bifen I/T and other Bifenthrin generics control over 75 common insect pests, including termites. Bifen can be used as an indoor and outdoor pest control, turf and ornamental application, and for treating pests in food-handling areas. Both Talstar One and Bifen I/T contain microcrystals that do not break down easily with rain once they bond to surfaces. Both Talstar One and Bifen IT are clear substances that leave no stains on painted surfaces. Bifen IT can last up to 6 months outside. See below for list of approved usage sites.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Bifenthrin - 7.9% synthetic pyrethroid

Application Instructions

Best applied with a 1 gallon sprayer. Apply to outside foundation and all entry points such as around windows, doors, etc. Always read the label completely before use.

Yield

  • 1 bottle (4 oz.) concentrate yields 4-8 gallons of finished solution.
  • 1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.
  • 1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.
  • ¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.
  • 1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-384 gallons of finished solution.

Standard Application Dilution rates / Mixing Ratios

  • 0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions
  • 0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use
  • 1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown
  • 1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer

* See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a Chapin Premier 1 gallon sprayer.

Use in the Following Areas:

In and around such areas as homes, commercial and industrial buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields, lawns and ornamentals; livestock and poultry houses; gardens, parks, lawns, grounds and other ornamental sites; flowers, foliage pants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, shrubs, ornamental trees; interior and exterior plantscapes such as those in hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, etc.; both food/feed and nonfood areas of food/feed handling establishments; aircraft (excluding cabins), apartments, bakeries, bottling facilities, breweries, buses, cafeterias, candy plants, canneries, dairy product processing plants, food manufacturing plants, food processing plants, food service establishments, granaries, grain mills, hospitals, hotels, industrial buildings, laboratories, meat/poultry/egg processing plants, mobile/motor homes, nursing homes, offices, railcars, restaurants, schools, ships, trailers, trucks, vessels, warehouses, wineries

Indoors

Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.

Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.

  • Do not use as a space spray.
  • Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.
  • Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days and only if there are signs of renewed insect activity.

* Bifen IT may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.

* Bifen IT is NOT labeled for control of bedbugs in residential or commercial areas except for in livestock and poultry housing structures.

Outdoors

General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 to 1 oz. of Bifen IT in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Bifen IT once every 3 months.

Mosquitoes: To control mosquitoes around buildings, landscapes, and lawns, dilute 0.33 to 1.0 fl. oz. per gallon of water and use one gallon of dilution per 1000 square feet as a general spray. Bifen IT can be mixed at lower concentrations and applied at higher volumes to ensure application of the proper amount of product to a given area.

Bagworms: Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. For optimum control treat when larvae have started to hatch and are young, directing spray to contact as many larvae as possible.

Chinch Bugs: Use 0.25 to 0.5 oz. per 1,000 square feet. In order to optimize the penetration of the insecticide to location of the chinch bugs, irrigation of the grass prior to treatment may be necessary.  If grass is being kept at a long mowing height or if the thatch layer is excessive, use higher volume treatments. It may be necessary to use higher application rates (up to 1 fl. oz. per 1,000 square feet) to control populations made up of both adults and nymphs in mid-summer.

Lawn applications: A hose end sprayer, such as the Chapin hose end sprayer, may be used to apply Bifen IT for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.

Termite Applications: Bifen IT may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Bifen IT to control subterranean termites.

  • Store out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Concentrate should be viable for 3-5 years. If separation occurs, shake well before using.
  • Do not apply more than 1 oz. Bifen IT per 1,000 square feet.
  • To avoid or delay pest resistance, especially on ornamentals and trees, it is recommended to use an alternate class of pesticide in any application program.
  • Not labeled for use on commercially grown plants or edible plants.

    5 of 5 stars  It's amazing!
    By Nick on 10/09/2008

I bought Bifen IT because I saw it so highly recommended on this website. I had seen at least one cockroach each day since moving into our new house, so I knew that it needed spraying. The instructions for the Bifen IT product were clear and easy to understand. I also got a 2-gallon sprayer to use, and it worked really well. I sprayed around the foundation up to 3 feet and about 2 feet away from the house, along with any other cracks and crevices around doors, etc. I haven't seen any cockroaches in the 6 weeks since I sprayed. It's amazing! I did find a dead one outside the house around the perimeter of the porch. This stuff really works. For the price, it's a bargain, and you can save yourself a lot of money by taking the hour or so to completely do your house. I plan on re-spraying every 3 months to keep the bugs out. If you're looking for a good deal on pest control, do it yourself with Bifen IT. I also had some questions about how to use it and the customer support people here on the site were very prompt and helpful.

5 of 5 stars  Outstanding results on spiders, mosquitos, ants, fleas/ticks
By Charles in West, TX on 06/18/2010

I own a campground in Texas, and I have been using Bifen IT for several years. I mix 1 ounce of Bifen IT per gallon of water and spray a fine mist on the lower branches of the trees in the campground (up to 6 feet off the ground). The mist that does not land on the tree branches falls to the ground, so I don't have to spray the ground. I treat the campground once every 6 months, and I have absolutely no problems with any insect. It kills mosquitos and ants almost immediately upon contact, and it takes about 30 seconds to kill spiders. When spiders are sprayed, they usually remain still for 15 seconds. Then they begin to feel the effects of the insecticide and their legs start moving frantically back and forth. At the end of 30 seconds the spider is dead. I'm not talking about little spiders. The spiders we have around here have bodies the size of a golf ball. By the way, I should mention that I add 1/4 cup of Dawn liquid dishwashing soap to 15 gallons of mixed insecticide. The liquid soap helps the insecticide stick to the foliage. Excellent product!

5 of 5 stars  "Secret" solution
    By Sharon on 02/21/2008
    Verified Purchase

I live in South Florida and about 4 years ago I noticed a 'new' variety of ant which came in fast and furious. The first year wasn't terribly bad but the second year they had multiplied 5x in numbers. I saw a pest control truck at a neighbors house and asked the guy what he knew about this new ant. He called it the "Caribbean Crazy Ant" (I looked it up on the Internet and sure enough, that was the 'new' ant). He told me that he could control this ant with a "secret" solution, and by the third year I called him for help. I live on a 1.3 acre landscaped lot with many trees, bushes, plants. He sprayed my yard and all the foliage for $200. I guess he thought that I would not attempt to spray this huge yard myself so he actually divulged his "secret" solution. He told me he used Talstar. So back to the Internet I went and found the generic Bifen IT brand. I ordered it and sprayed my own yard the next year for less than $30. The ants stayed away from my house and I will use this product each and every spring from this point on! BTW: of course, not only did it control the crazy ants, it has kept all other pests away as well!

5 of 5 stars  Great stuff
By Butch in South Jersey on 06/22/2009

I like this better than Malathion and Sevin. I spray our lawn, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, rain gutters, under our deck and foundation with Bifen IT. I'm on a wooded acre and spray as much of my property as I can. I give everything a good wet spray with a hose end sprayer which offers more coverage than a tank sprayer. I spray a few days after a rain when everything is dried out. I've always thought that the rain and moisture breeds mosquitoes so that is a good time to spray them. There is no odor. But it's the insect protection that is fantastic. We spend a lot of time outside in the yard and gardens. We also spend a lot of time on our back deck at night. In the past it would be unbearable. This stuff kills bugs dead and keeps killing which seems like weeks at a time. Pesky mosquitoes and gnats are history. If you wanna be able to spend time outside and those flying insects are a problem then this is the stuff you need. I just hope the state doesn't outlaw it.

5 of 5 stars  Extremely effective
    By Scott on 06/15/2008

I use Bifen IT to control fleas outside where my cat hangs out (front porch and adjacent yard area). It has proven to be extremely effective when applied every 3 to 4 months during the spring and summer. I highly recommend this product.

    5 of 5 stars  Fabulous
By Missy in orlando, FL on 09/04/2011

This works GREAT and FAST. I used it heavily on the outside, inside and garage of our three bdrm home. Have found ( within 24 hrs) nothing but dead insects ( ants, roaches, spiders, silverfish, etc.) . we didn't know we HAD some of the pests we found dead or dying. What great product. It is true, as many have already stated, that the mixing instructions are not clear. Needs to be addressed. However, to be safe, I OVERdid the amount of Bifen the "instructions" seemed t be calling for, per water portion. Either way../IT WORKS and FAST. We live in Central Florida where it rains hard and often in the summer. Rainfalls and winds have done NOTHING to effect the potency ( though the Bifen has dried, is invisible...) outside. I watch ALL bugs stop in their tracks and rythe in pain until they die where they stand after just a few minutes. Amazing stuff. It does not stain walls, carpet, baseboards at all whatsoever. Just keeps working invisibly. Will be getting more for sure, if and when we need it. It surprisingly even has kept mosquitoes and most moths away outside, too, as I sprayed it on the outside patio lights and a small section of the surrounding wall. Get it. You will NOT be sorry. Keep AWAY from your pets for drying time!!!!!! Bug free and, happy, Missy and Dan. Orlando, FL

5 of 5 stars  Works so far
By Brian in Norman, Ok on 06/28/2010
    Verified Purchase

I started to notice more and more bugs/spiders/ants coming into the house. Rather than paying someone 100+ dollars to do it, I looked into a DIY alternative. Being that the house hasn't been sprayed before, I did 1 oz per gallon. I assumed it was working, as I sprayed I saw spiders running for their lives. I didn't think a spider could move that fast. It's been about a week and I haven't had anything in the house. For the amount it makes and how effective it seemingly is - I would highly recommend this in the best bang for your buck category.

5 of 5 stars  Great Service
By Larry in Oceanside, CA on 04/26/2010

I haven't used Bifen IT yet, but this is the same chemical that is in Ortho "Home Defense", that is effective yet non-toxic to animals and people. I have used the Ortho product a lot, including for dry wood termites. Using Bifen IT, you can mix up the same solution for a little over $1 a gallon compared to $8 a gallon for the Ortho product. Local professional exterminators use the same chemical for general insect control, both in liquid and granule form. Also, I received good and prompt service from DoMyOwnPestControl.com, and I will be ordering more products from them. Their website encouraged me to tackle my termite project rather than paying very big bucks to the termite companies.

5 of 5 stars  Bifen Holds Up To It's Billing
By Alex in Rhode Island on 08/26/2009

I was in the pest control industry for eight years and so as an experienced person who has using pesticides such as Demon EC - a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, I have to say that Bifen IT is fantastic. It was recommended by my brother, a pest control operator, to treat a problem I had with carpenter ants. After applying it as directed (1 oz per gallon) I was able to successfully cut down the population to zero. Obviously it will need reapplication since the EPA has regulated that these chemicals be biodegradable but it's certainly worth the effort. You don't need to hire a company to control your pest problems. Buy this product and follow the directions and you'll be delighted with the results.

My uncle told me about this product. Since Diazinon isn't available anymore I had to find something new for the home and the work shop. I have used Bifen IT now for a year and it is a better product than what I used before. We had a time with spiders for awhile but now have them under control. I use it around my trees for ants and in my work shop for spiders. I also use it in my dog kennels and there are no ants or bugs around. It works great at label recommendations in a pump up sprayer.

5 of 5 stars  Great product at a great price!
    By Don on 08/24/2008

This stuff, Bifen IT, works great! We had white-footed ants here, and I thought they were just going to be part of Florida living. When the little buggers first moved to town even the state entomologists were scratching their heads! One even stated that they were almost IMPOSSIBLE to eradicate! Whoever invented Bifenthrin should get a gold medal! Not only are the ants history, but I can't even remember the last time I saw one of our lovely American cockroaches (those beauties are sometimes over 2 inches long!). I only have one complaint: now all my neighbors want me to spray at their homes, too! GREAT PRODUCTS, GREAT PRICES, GREAT SERVICE... thanks to DoMyOwnPestControl!

    By Chris on 03/04/2008

I use Bifen IT to control roaches and other insects in my home. It dries clear with no stain or smell and kills many kind of insect invaders . The price is right and I feel safe having it as a indoor insecticide around my family and pets once it is dry. I have found it works very well, and I don't have the cost of a exterminator that probably uses the same insecticide .

5 of 5 stars  Working great!
    By Steve on 05/31/2006

I have applied the Bifen IT using a hose end sprayer at the rate of 1.5 ounces per gallon and power sprayed the entire property. Two weeks later I made another application concentrating more heavily on three feet up the side of the house and a three foot band around the house. Using this method and this product seemed to abate my scorpion problem. My plan is to do another application a month after the last which will be in two weeks from now. Last weekend I did find some dead scorpions that were on the perimeter wall and one live one that was very slow. So this seems to be working. I assume if I can control them outside they will not be inside the house. Oh yeah, I did use delta dust in all the crevices and in the attic just in case these were entry points.

QIs Bifen IT safe for domestic pets?
I have three dogs, and I am scared to use chemicals.

ABifen IT is safely used in thousands of homes across the country everyday. Bifen IT is safe for use around pets when used according to the label. You should always keep children and pets away from the away while you are treating, and then once the treatment is dry it is perfectly safe to allow pets to re-enter the area

QHow does Bifen IT compare to Bifen XTS and Permethrin for mosquito control?

ABifen I/T is our most popular choice for mosquito control.  The Bifen XTS is the same product, just in a higher concentration.  For mosquito control you do not need the higher concentration, it is not necessary.  Bifen I/T would also be a better solution then permethrin because permethrin breaks down quicker in sunlight and the Bifen I/T only needs to be applied every 30 days whereas permethrin would need to be applied every two weeks.  The most important thing to remember when treating for mosquitoes is that they hang out on the underside of leaves and shrubs.  You should treat all shrubs, bushes and trees around the outside patio or wherever you hang out at around the house.  You should also treat the tree line in your yard near the forest if one exists.  Remember to not only treat the main bush or shrub but also the underside of the leaves.

QWhat type of weather should I put the Bifen IT out in? Rainy, cold, hot?

AAll of our liquid insecticides including Bifen IT should be applied in dry weather, not rainy weather.  All of the liquid insecticides are made to bond to dry surfaces and will last longer when applied when it is dry and not going to rain for at least 24 hours.  The temperature does not matter as much.  It can be applied in hot or cold weather, but it must be dry and not wet to work at its highest potential.

QIs Bifenthrin good on active termite control?

ABifenthrin products used to be considered a good form of termite treatment, but bifenthrin acts as a repellent and now a days almost all professional termite companies are using non-repellents, such as Termidor SC or Dominion 2L.  We have a great article called How To Do A Termite Treatment that explains how to perform a treatment using a non-repellent termiticide.

QCan Bifen IT be used inside and be effective for household pest control?
Everything I read pertained to spraying outside. We feed and protect birds and some other fun critters that I don't want to hurt such as chameleons, rabbits and other things that eat from the ground.

ABifen IT is considered a general use insecticide and is labeled for outside and inside use. It is odorless, and very safe to use around children or pets. The general rule is that while spraying you keep children or pets in another room or outside to play. After about one hour, it should be dry and it is perfectly safe to allow kids and/or pets back in the room. This product is only strong enough to kill tiny insects, and would have no effect on animals like rabbits, etc.

Bifen IT provides excellent control of over 75 insect pests, leaves a long-lasting residual for up to 3 months indoors and one moth outdoors, is odorless, non-staining, dries clear and is safe around children and pets when used as directed.  Bifen IT and the other bifenthrin products can be used both indoors and outdoors, on lawns and ornamentals, and even in the kitchen. Be sure to keep pets out of the treated area until it has a chance to fully dry. Once completely dry, Bifen IT is completely safe for your pets.

QIs there a shelf life on mixed Bifen IT solution??
After mixing Bifen IT with water, is there a time period during which the mixed solution must be used before it becomes ineffective? I like to keep the remainder of the mixed product in a sprayer for later use, but am wondering if it will degrade quickly once mixed with water. Thank you Gary Black

AYou should never store product in your sprayer as it will weaken the gaskets and other pieces within the sprayer shortening the life of the sprayer. Bifen IT should be used up within 24 hours of diluting it with water. The longer an insecticide stands in a diluted state the less effective it becomes.

QHow long is Bifen IT effective on roaches?
We discovered that our roaches are worse than we thought. How long does it take to kill them? After it dries, is it still working or does it just kill if they are directly sprayed with it?

ABifen IT does leave a residual and will continue killing long after it dries.  Typically, for roach problems you would want to apply every 30 days.  However, for most roach infestations spraying alone is not enough.  Using a roach bait up in the cabinets and drawers along with spraying down low under and behind appliances and along baseboards is the best way to eradicate a roach problem. Of course, sanitation and cleanliness also has to be a part of the plan.

QCan I use Bifen IT on fleas that are infesting the inside of our home?
I see that Bifen IT works for fleas outside, but I don't see that it is recommended inside? I did notice that it doesn't stain carpet etc, so why don't they recommend it? Have I missed something?

A

Bifen IT is labeled for cracks, crevices and wall voids only indoors, meaning that you could not spray it over carpeted areas or on furniture, the places that fleas are most likely to develop. Ultracide would be a great choice for indoor flea control. Ultracide contains both an insecticide to kill the active biting adult fleas and an IGR to help control developing flea eggs, larva and pupa. For most effective control, vacuum before treating and everyday for the next two weeks, be sure to change the bag or empty the reservoir immediately after vacuuming. A second treatment should be applied after 14 days.
