How Bifen IT Works
Bifen IT is a liquid concentrate insecticide that contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Bifen IT does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Bifen IT is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Bifen IT will be most effective as a barrier for target pests with a thorough application.
Bifen IT Target Pests
Bifen IT is very effective on Japanese Beetles, clover mites, ants, termites, fleas, ticks, spiders, scorpions, roaches, millipedes, earwigs, army worms, mealybugs, mites, grasshoppers, pillbugs, cutworms, sod webworms, weevils, leaf miners, box elder bugs, bees, wasps, sowbugs, crickets, and turf and ornamental pests. Bifen IT even has an expanded label to include control of stink bugs indoors and outdoors.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Bifenthrin - 7.9% synthetic pyrethroid.
Bifen IT Application Instructions
Best applied with a 1 gallon sprayer. Apply to outside foundation and all entry points such as around windows, doors, etc. Always read the label completely before use.
1 bottle (4 oz.) concentrate yields 4-8 gallons of finished solution.
1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.
1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.
¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.
1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-384 gallons of finished solution.
Standard Application Dilution rates / Mixing Ratios for Bifen IT
0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions
0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use
1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown
1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer
*See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a Chapin Premier 1 gallon sprayer.
Bifen IT is for use in the following areas:
In and around such areas as homes, commercial and industrial buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields, lawns and ornamentals; livestock and poultry houses; gardens, parks, lawns, grounds and other ornamental sites; flowers, foliage pants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, shrubs, ornamental trees; interior and exterior plantscapes such as those in hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, etc.; both food/feed and nonfood areas of food/feed handling establishments; aircraft (excluding cabins), apartments, bakeries, bottling facilities, breweries, buses, cafeterias, candy plants, canneries, dairy product processing plants, food manufacturing plants, food processing plants, food service establishments, granaries, grain mills, hospitals, hotels, industrial buildings, laboratories, meat/poultry/egg processing plants, mobile/motor homes, nursing homes, offices, railcars, restaurants, schools, ships, trailers, trucks, vessels, warehouses, wineries
Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.
Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.
- Do not use as a space spray.
- Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.
- Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days and only if there are signs of renewed insect activity.
*Bifen IT may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.
*Bifen IT is NOT labeled for control of bedbugs in residential or commercial areas except for in livestock and poultry housing structures.
General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 to 1 oz. of Bifen IT in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Bifen IT once every 3 months.
Mosquitoes - To control mosquitoes around buildings, landscapes, and lawns, dilute 0.33 to 1.0 fl. oz. per gallon of water and use one gallon of dilution per 1000 square feet as a general spray. Bifen IT can be mixed at lower concentrations and applied at higher volumes to ensure application of the proper amount of product to a given area.
Bagworms - Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. For optimum control treat when larvae have started to hatch and are young, directing spray to contact as many larvae as possible.
Chinch Bugs – Use 0.25 to 0.5 oz. per 1,000 square feet. In order to optimize the penetration of the insecticide to location of the chinch bugs, irrigation of the grass prior to treatment may be necessary. If grass is being kept at a long mowing height or if the thatch layer is excessive, use higher volume treatments. It may be necessary to use higher application rates (up to 1 fl. oz. per 1,000 square feet) to control populations made up of both adults and nymphs in mid-summer.
Lawn applications – A hose end sprayer, such as the Chapin hose end sprayer, may be used to apply Bifen IT for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.
Termite Applications- Bifen IT may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Bifen IT to control subterranean termites.

I bought Bifen IT because I saw it so highly recommended on this website. I had seen at least one cockroach each day since moving into our new house, so I knew that it needed spraying. The instructions for the Bifen IT product were clear and easy to understand. I also got a 2-gallon sprayer to use, and it worked really well. I sprayed around the foundation up to 3 feet and about 2 feet away from the house, along with any other cracks and crevices around doors, etc. I haven't seen any cockroaches in the 6 weeks since I sprayed. It's amazing! I did find a dead one outside the house around the perimeter of the porch. This stuff really works. For the price, it's a bargain, and you can save yourself a lot of money by taking the hour or so to completely do your house. I plan on re-spraying every 3 months to keep the bugs out. If you're looking for a good deal on pest control, do it yourself with Bifen IT. I also had some questions about how to use it and the customer support people here on the site were very prompt and helpful.

Outstanding results on spiders, mosquitos, ants, fleas/ticks
By Charles in West, TX on June 18, 2010
I own a campground in Texas, and I have been using Bifen IT for several years. I mix 1 ounce of Bifen IT per gallon of water and spray a fine mist on the lower branches of the trees in the campground (up to 6 feet off the ground). The mist that does not land on the tree branches falls to the ground, so I don't have to spray the ground. I treat the campground once every 6 months, and I have absolutely no problems with any insect. It kills mosquitos and ants almost immediately upon contact, and it takes about 30 seconds to kill spiders. When spiders are sprayed, they usually remain still for 15 seconds. Then they begin to feel the effects of the insecticide and their legs start moving frantically back and forth. At the end of 30 seconds the spider is dead. I'm not talking about little spiders. The spiders we have around here have bodies the size of a golf ball. By the way, I should mention that I add 1/4 cup of Dawn liquid dishwashing soap to 15 gallons of mixed insecticide. The liquid soap helps the insecticide stick to the foliage. Excellent product!

I live in South Florida and about 4 years ago I noticed a 'new' variety of ant which came in fast and furious. The first year wasn't terribly bad but the second year they had multiplied 5x in numbers. I saw a pest control truck at a neighbors house and asked the guy what he knew about this new ant. He called it the "Caribbean Crazy Ant" (I looked it up on the Internet and sure enough, that was the 'new' ant). He told me that he could control this ant with a "secret" solution, and by the third year I called him for help. I live on a 1.3 acre landscaped lot with many trees, bushes, plants. He sprayed my yard and all the foliage for $200. I guess he thought that I would not attempt to spray this huge yard myself so he actually divulged his "secret" solution. He told me he used Talstar. So back to the Internet I went and found the generic Bifen IT brand. I ordered it and sprayed my own yard the next year for less than $30. The ants stayed away from my house and I will use this product each and every spring from this point on! BTW: of course, not only did it control the crazy ants, it has kept all other pests away as well!

I like this better than Malathion and Sevin. I spray our lawn, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, rain gutters, under our deck and foundation with Bifen IT. I'm on a wooded acre and spray as much of my property as I can. I give everything a good wet spray with a hose end sprayer which offers more coverage than a tank sprayer. I spray a few days after a rain when everything is dried out. I've always thought that the rain and moisture breeds mosquitoes so that is a good time to spray them. There is no odor. But it's the insect protection that is fantastic. We spend a lot of time outside in the yard and gardens. We also spend a lot of time on our back deck at night. In the past it would be unbearable. This stuff kills bugs dead and keeps killing which seems like weeks at a time. Pesky mosquitoes and gnats are history. If you wanna be able to spend time outside and those flying insects are a problem then this is the stuff you need. I just hope the state doesn't outlaw it.

I use Bifen IT to control fleas outside where my cat hangs out (front porch and adjacent yard area). It has proven to be extremely effective when applied every 3 to 4 months during the spring and summer. I highly recommend this product.
Fire Ant Killer

This chemical is great. I saw a video on youtube that said it would kill fireants . Only a small amount is needed and it worked great. Ants don't move, they die.

Pretty good for mosquito control
By Paul in Memphis, TN on April 22, 2015
I can't comment on how good this is for termites and other pests, but this worked very well for mosquito control last summer and fall in Memphis. I went 3 weeks of nearly zero bites before having to respray. Occasional rain didn't seem to lessen the effect, and it didn't stain or discolor my siding. Be sure to spray under leaves on bushes, soffits, fence boards, etc as mosquitoes like anywhere there is shade. The better the coverage, the less mosquitoes you'll see. Also, spray when the forecast calls for no rain for a couple days so the chemicals can set.

Hands down the BEST!
By Charles in Brandon, MS on March 22, 2015
We moved into a new home by some woods last year. The house had been empty for almost a year & lots of insects were around & inside the house. After the first application, what bugs were inside had died, and after spraying the yard & fence line, nothing has made it inside our house or garage! Not a spider, ant, or termite. We have 3 cats & a dog inside & Bifin is safe around them after it dries.

May 23, 2010 Bob asked:
QHow does Bifen IT compare to Bifen XTS and Permethrin for mosquito control?
ABifen I/T is our most popular choice for mosquito control. The Bifen XTS is the same product, just in a higher concentration. For mosquito control you do not need the higher concentration, it is not necessary. Bifen I/T would also be a better solution then permethrin because permethrin breaks down quicker in sunlight and the Bifen I/T only needs to be applied every 30 days whereas permethrin would need to be applied every two weeks. The most important thing to remember when treating for mosquitoes is that they hang out on the underside of leaves and shrubs. You should treat all shrubs, bushes and trees around the outside patio or wherever you hang out at around the house. You should also treat the tree line in your yard near the forest if one exists. Remember to not only treat the main bush or shrub but also the underside of the leaves.
August 3, 2010 Jenny asked:
QIs Bifen IT safe for domestic pets?
I have three dogs, and I am scared to use chemicals.
ABifen IT is safely used in thousands of homes across the country everyday. Bifen IT is safe for use around pets when used according to the label. You should always keep children and pets away from the away while you are treating, and then once the treatment is dry it is perfectly safe to allow pets to re-enter the area
September 26, 2009 Howard asked:
QWhat type of weather should I put the Bifen IT out in? Rainy, cold, hot?
AAll of our liquid insecticides including Bifen IT should be applied in dry weather, not rainy weather. All of the liquid insecticides are made to bond to dry surfaces and will last longer when applied when it is dry and not going to rain for at least 24 hours. The temperature does not matter as much. It can be applied in hot or cold weather, but it must be dry and not wet to work at its highest potential.
March 8, 2011 Linda asked:
QIs Bifenthrin good on active termite control?
ABifenthrin products used to be considered a good form of termite treatment, but bifenthrin acts as a repellent and now a days almost all professional termite companies are using non-repellents, such as Termidor SC or Dominion 2L. We have a great article called How To Do A Termite Treatment that explains how to perform a treatment using a non-repellent termiticide.
July 29, 2009 Honey asked:
QCan Bifen IT be used inside and be effective for household pest control?
Everything I read pertained to spraying outside. We feed and protect birds and some other fun critters that I don't want to hurt such as chameleons, rabbits and other things that eat from the ground.
ABifen IT is considered a general use insecticide and is labeled for outside and inside use. It is odorless, and very safe to use around children or pets. The general rule is that while spraying you keep children or pets in another room or outside to play. After about one hour, it should be dry and it is perfectly safe to allow kids and/or pets back in the room. This product is only strong enough to kill tiny insects, and would have no effect on animals like rabbits, etc.

Tasha from Atlanta,ga asked:
QHow do I use a hose end sprayer to apply Bifen? At what rate do I apply? Where do I buy a hose end sprayer?
I have about 9,000 sq feet to apply. I don't want to under or over saturate, so I am confused on to use a hose end sprayer.
A Bifen IT should be mixed and applied at one ounce per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft. You will calibrate your hose end sprayer to disperse this amount. You do not dilute the Bifen IT when putting it in the chamber on the hose end sprayer, you put the concentrate directly in the cannister and the tube automatically sucks up however much you have told it to on the dial and disperses it with each gallon that comes through the hose. The down side to using a hose end sprayer is it removes a lot of accuracy with your treatment and wont give you as thorough and even coverage as a hand pump or backpack sprayer would. Either sprayer you use, you will use 1 ounce per gallon of water. We carry a hose end sprayer and offer free shipping.

Laurie from Raleigh, Nc asked:
QIs Bifen safe for birds nesting in the infected tree?
I need to get rid of spittlebugs before they destoy the cypress tree, but I know there sre birds nesting inside. And birds often alite on the tree. Is this safe for birds? If not, can you recommend a product that is safe?
Bifen IT is safe to apply if the birds are not in the area during application until the surfaces have completely dried. It should also not be applied directly on them or the nest. Once applied and dried it is safe for birds, squirrels, rabbits, pets, and family members to be in the area.

Zandra from Fruitport, Mi asked:
QTip reads: “Remember that Bifen IT is non selective and will kill the good guys…”
…so avoid spraying flowers. I was under the impression that these insecticides have a residual effect & that’s why you only need to apply a few times a year to kill. If that’s the case, how does it NOT kill the beneficials that happen to land on leaves, grass to rest? We have swampy wooded acreage w/ mosquitoes but we also have dragonflies, butterflies, & bees. When we broke down & used a company (cyfluthrin/ bifenthrin) after trying TONS of organic options, I noticed that I didn’t have any more of my beneficials. We are organic but didn’t know there was swampland when we looked at the house w/ snow on the ground last year. I didn’t even plant any more flowers for fear I’d ‘entice them to their doom’.
A Bifen IT is not labeled for beneficial insects, but it has the potential to kill them if they come in contact with the treated area.

John from Ny asked:
Qwhy does Bifen IT have 2 pour spouts?
A Bifen IT has two pour spouts because one is for measuring. You squeeze the bottom of the bottle and the product will go up the straw on the side and into the measuring cup to be mixed.

Jason from Louisburg asked:
QWill Bifen IT not only control but kill ticks in my yard and if so how long will it take to kill ticks?
A Bifen IT is labeled to eradicate ticks. How long it takes the ticks to die after they come into contact with a treated area will depend on a number of factors. It will depend on the maturity of the tick as well as how long they stayed on the treated area, how long it has been since the area was treated and the concentration that was used to treat the area. Typically it can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a day or so for them to die. It can take several weeks for you to stop seeing ticks indoors because the ticks like to stay hidden which also means they could be staying out of treated areas and eggs may hatch out prolonging the infestation. We recommend doing follow up treatments every two weeks at the highest usage rate of 1 oz of product per gallon of water until you do not see any ticks. It is also recommended to add an insect growth regulator such as Archer IGR to impede the reproductive cycle of the insect. For more information on treating ticks, please check out our article on Tick Control.

Gary from Pahoa, Hi asked:
QDoes Bifen IT degrade if container is left in the sunlight?
I left my container of Bifen IT on the side of my house for a month, where it gets a few hours of tropical sun (Hawaii). It as yellowed some, but seems otherwise OK. Will it still work or should I throw it away (properly) and buy new?
A Insecticides should be stored out of extreme heat and direct sunlight. The yellowing may have been the container turning rather than the concentrate. The sunlight and heat degrade the active ingredient and greatly reduce the shelf life, so you would probably be best served using fresh product.

Paul from Latrobe Pa. asked:
QI have a 3 story building with hard to reach places around the soffit. I have a problem with carpenter bees/wasps and the soffit around the building is wood. I would like to be able to treat the building using a solution that can be applied with a PRESSURE WASHER to reach the areas not easily accessible with a ladder. If possible, I would like to also treat for spiders and ants. Is all of this possible with one solution? It would be great if I could spray down the building with one solution.
A We would recommend applying a product like Bifen IT in a our Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer. This sprayer will reach well over 30ft. We do not carry any products that can be applied in a pressure washer for this type of insect control. You will mix the product at 1 oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft monthly on the exterior. Please let us know if you need anything else.

Anderson from Alabama asked:
QWhen doing a broadcast lawn application, is the Bifen IT effectiveness weakened after mowing the lawn? Or once applied is it seeped deep enough into the soil that it is not affected?
A For the best application of Bifen IT to your lawn, you want to first mow the grass a couple days ahead of application. You want to make sure there is no rain in the forecast at least 4 hours after application, to ensure it will stick. It is safe to spray Bifen IT in and around ornamentals, trees, shrubs, lawn, and can be used indoors as well.

John from Stapleton, Al asked:
QI've just cut and split firewood and I've discovered powder post beetles have already fount it. It will be at least 7 months before the wood will be handled. Can Bifen IT be sprayed on the firewood?
A We would not recommend using Bifen IT on firewood. We recommend only using a product that is labeled for that. Please contact your Local Cooperative Extension Office to advice on what would be safe to use.

Bill from La asked:
QSo where does the "much less expensive" part start?
Everyone claims this is just like Talstar, but quote "much less expensive". It's nearly the exact same price!!
A There are different sizes of Talstar P and Bifen I/T and prices can fluctuate based on fair market value at the time of purchase. If you compare the price of each product respectively to their sizes there is a substantial savings available. For example, a quart of Talstar P is priced at $36.50 right now but a quart of Bifen I/T is listed for $22.64 - That is a savings of $13.86 for the same size container!
