Boring at the base of shrubs/trees

Something is boring/living at the center base of one of my loropetalums and a small cedar tree. It is leaving what appears to be a pile of sand (like an ant hill). However, the entrance is larger than an ant hill. Do you know what this might be and how I can get rid of it? There is no noticeable damage yet to either of these plants.

Answer:

We apologize but we are unable to identify what type of pests is causing the damage based on a description.  We would recommend contacting a local pest company to come out and help you identify the pest, most companies will do free inspections.
