What is Brodifacoum?
Brodifacoum is an active ingredient found in many rodenticides, including Final Blox, and Final Rodenticide Pellets. Brodifacoum rodenticide formulations include baits, mini pellets, paraffin blocks, tracking powders, concentrates, and dusts. While primarily used in rodenticides, Brodifacoum may also be used to control other mammalian pests such as rabbits or possums.
What kind of rodents does Brodifacoum target?
Bromadilone targets primarily rats and mice, including those that might be resistant to first generation anticoagulants.
How does Brodifacoum work to control rodents?
Brodifacoum falls into the class of rodenticides known as anticoagulants, and is actually one of the strongest anticoagulants available. Most rodent control today utilizes anticoagulant rodenticide baits. Anticoagulants cause death in rodents by disrupting the normal function for blood-clotting, resulting in death from internal bleeding. Death is delayed; occurring within 3 to 10 days after feeding begins.
Advantages of Anticoagulant Baits:
- There is no pain involved so the rodent does not associate their condition with the bait, and will return to feed.
- Anticoagulants are considered "low hazard" to people and animals.
- The delay in onset of symptoms allows for time to prevent serious consequences in the case of accidental poisonings in humans, pets, or wildlife.
- Vitamin K1 is a readily available antidote for anticoagulant poisoning.
