Cyper TC

Cyper TC is a cypermethrin-based product that is used for pre and post treatment for subterranean termites. Cyper TC provides control of subterranean termites (including eastern subterranean, western subterranean, desert termite, and Formosan subterranean termite) and when applied to wood may be used for spot treatment of drywood termites. Cyper TC is labeled for a wide variety of other wood destroying insects and as a barrier treatment for other crawling and flying insects.

Cyper TC cannot be used for a termite treatment if there is a well or cistern on the property.

How Cyper TC Works

Cyper TC is a liquid insecticide concentrate containing the active ingredient Cypermethrin. Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid, a man-made active ingredient made to mimic the chemical properties of naturally occurring pyrethrins. Insects that come in contact with the direct spray or dried residual of Cyper TC suffer from hyperexcitation of the central nervous system, causing paralysis and eventual death.

For subterranean termite treatments, Cyper TC is a repellent termiticide, meaning it only kills the insects that come in direct contact with the spray or residual, causing termites to avoid the treatment areas. Cyper TC does not have the “transfer effect” that non-repellent termiticides such as Termidor SC have.

Target Pests

Subterranean termites, drywood termites, wood-infesting beetles, bark beetles, fleas and ticks, perimeter pests

INSECTS CONTROLLED: Subterranean termites (including easter subterranean, western subterranean, desert termite, and Formosan subterranean termite), drywood termites (Incisitermes spp.); powderpost beetles, false powderpost beetles, deathwatch beetles, old house borers, ambrosia bettles; carpenter bees, carpenter ants; ants, bees, centipedes, chiggers, cockroaches, Asian cockroaches, crickets, earwigs, firebrats, flies, ground beetles, mosquitoes, millipedes, pill bugs, scorpions, silverfish, sowbugs, spiders, wasps, chinch bugs, mole crickets, fire ants, bark beetles, borers, boxelder bugs, elm leaf beetles, gypsy moths (adults and caterpillars), fleas, ticks

Target Uses

Cyper TC is a Cypermethrin based product that acts as an insecticidal barrier to control and prevent subterranean termite infestations in and around structures. For effective control, the insecticide emulsion must be adequately dispersed in the soil to establish a barrier between the structure and the termites in the soil. Cyper TC will give you 5-7 years of termite protection. Cyper TC used for pre-construction under slabs, (horizontally) treats up to 1,000 square feet. When used for post construction, along footings, slabs, around existing buildings, (vertically) treats up to 250 linear feet.

Cyper TC also can be used for many other treatments, including spot treatment of wood infesting insects such as powderpost beetles and carpenter bees; lawn treatments for chinch bugs, mole crickets, fleas, and ticks; perimeter applications for arthropods such as cockroaches and spiders; and ant and fire ant mound drenching. See product label for complete application instructions.

* Cyper TC is not appropriate for indoor, broad-spectrum crack and crevice or broadcast treatments.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Cypermethrin 25.4%

Application Instructions

Termite treatments should be performed so as to create a continuous barrier. For post-construction termite treatment, use 4 gallons of finished solution per 10 lineal feet in a 6 in. x 6 in. trench directly around the foundation of the structure. In areas that contain concrete, the same amount of solution should be applied in holes drilled 10”-12” apart and at least 12” deep using a hammer drill with a ½” x 18” drill bit. See our article How To Do A Termite Treatment article and video for details.

Cyper TC solution may be converted to a foam and the foam used to treat voids to control or prevent termite, ant, bee, wasp infestations or other arthropods harboring under slabs.

Applications may be made to create a chemical barrier in the soil around wooden construction such as signs and landscape ornamentation by applying a 0.25%-0.5% emulsion. Use 1 gallon of emulsion per foot of depth for poles and posts less than six inches in diameter. For larger poles, use 1.5 gallons of emulsion per foot of depth.

  • 1 gallon container yields up to 96 gallons of finished solution.

Standard Application Dilution Rates / Mixing Ratios:

  • 0.51 fl. oz. (15 mL)/ gal. of water – 0.1% - most general pest control
  • 1.3 fl. oz. (38 mL)/ gal. of water – 0.25% - most termite applications; wood infesting insects
  • 2.6 fl. oz. (77 mL)/ gal. of water – 0.50% - half volume termite/foam applications
  • 5.1 fl. oz. (151 mL)/ gal. of water – 1.0% - some low volume termite applications
  • 0.33 to 0.65 fl. oz./ 1,000 sq. ft. – in water sufficient for uniform coverage such as 3-20 gallons – chinch bugs, mole crickets
  • 1.25-2.5 fl. oz. in 16-100 gal. of water to 4,000 sq. ft. of lawn – fleas and ticks
  • Use a 0.25% to 1.0% emulsion converted to a foam with expansion characteristics from 2 – 20 times for foam applications.
  • 1 gallon of 0.25% solution per 10 sq. ft. – horizontal treatments, such as for subslab injection and soil rodding

For use in the Following Areas:

Pre- and post-construction subterranean termite treatments around residential, commercial, and institutional structures; outside surfaces of buildings including, but not limited to, exterior siding, foundations, porches, window frames, eaves, patios, garages, refuse dumps, lawns or grass areas adjacent or around private homes, duplexes, townhouses, condominiums, house trailers, apartment complexes, carports, garages, fence lines, storage sheds, barns, and other residential structures, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings, soil, trunks of woody ornamentals and other areas where pests congregate or have been seen

Indoors

DO NOT use as a general crack and crevice, spot, or broadcast treatment indoors. Cyper TC is primarily for outdoor use except for limited applications indoors. See product label for complete application instructions.

Treatment of wood in place for termites, carpenter ant, carpenter bees, and wood infesting beetles: In addition to subsurface applications, this product may be used for treating infested wood in place. It can be applied to wood by crack and crevice tool, coarse fan spray or injection. Overall broadcast spray applications must be limited to attics, crawl spaces, unfinished basements and similar generally unoccupied areas. In occupied indoor areas, treat wood trim and exposed beams by brush or coarse spray directed only onto the wood to be treated. Use this spray at a rate of 1 gallon of diluted spray per 1,000 square feet of surface area. In addition to subsurface applications, this product may be used for treating infested wood in place. Outdoors

Application instructions for general pest control barrier treatment:

Mix 1.3 oz - 5 oz of Cyper into a gallon of water in a sprayer, (we recommend the Chapin Premier 1 Gallon Sprayer) then spray in a 3 ft. band around the base of structure. Next spray a 2-10 ft. band on the ground around the structure.

Residential lawns: Apply at the rate of 0.33 to 0.65 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. in a volume of water sufficient for uniform coverage such as 3 to 20 gallons. Use the lower rate to knock down pests and the higher rate where faster knockdown or greater residual is desired. Lawn should not be longer than 3 inches at the time of application.

Carpenter Bees: Use a 0.1% emulsion for control of carpenter bees. Liquid may be sprayed directly into gallery entrance holes. Following treatment, the entrance holes may be left open 24 hours to be certain that returning adult bees are killed. When there is no activity, the hole may be closed with wood putty.

For termite horizontal barriers: Apply the emulsion at the rate of 1 gallon per 10 square feet to fill dirt. If fill is washed gravel or other coarse material, apply the emulsion at the rate of 1-1/2 gallons per 10 square feet. If concrete slabs cannot be poured over soil the same day it has been treated, a waterproof cover, such as polyethylene sheeting, should be placed over the soil. This is not necessary if foundation walls have been installed around the treated soil.

* See above for termite vertical barriers. In crawl spaces, treatment should include both sides of foundation and around all piers and pipes.

Features:

  • Inexpensive termite treatment
  • Labeled for treatment of bark beetles and other wood-infesting pests
  • Quick knockdown of fleas and ticks in residential lawns
  • Can be used as perimeter treatment for many common insect pests
  • Pet safe when used as directed

Extra Tips

  • Do not treat soil beneath structures that contain wells or cisterns.
  • Do not use as a general crack and crevice, spot, or broadcast treatment indoors.
  • Do not treat soil that is water-saturated or frozen. Do not treat while precipitation is occurring.
  • Not for use in voids insulated with rigid foam.
  • Keep children and pets out of treatment areas until surface is completely dry.
  • Applications to some vinyl siding may cause staining.
  • Not for use in Federally Inspected meat and poultry plants.
  • Do not use concentrate or emulsion in fogging equipment.
  • Do not apply to edible crops.
  • Contains petroleum distillates.
  • May have a slight odor after application.

Be very careful spraying this on or near foliage/flowers that honey bees forage. It will kill them along with any "nuisance" or destructive insects. Also be very careful of run off, it's deadly to aquatic life and frogs. It's VERY EFFECTIVE, but kinda like roundup. What ever it touches gets torched.

This is supposed to be the Cadillac of all Termite treatments, a professional company in my area advertises that you NEED this for termite control. The product supposedly stays active for up to 10 years, I however spray it once a year under my rentals (2 manufactured homes) and at my house. I have been accused (by a professional Pest-Control Tech) that I kill off the termites for all my neighbors with this habit but I'd rather kill their termites off as well than having their's come over to my property. With my homemade sprayer I can shoot the product up to 30 feet under the buildings and have no bugs inside or out the residences.

Stink bugs were at an all time high. Couldn't find anything to get rid of them until I got some Cyper TC. After one application I notice a reduction in the population. Had some rainy days and then saw them coming back but not to the degree when they first started. Applied a second spraying and saw even less. Good stuff. Be careful not to get on your skin, burning sensation. Washed with soap and water and all was good.

An economical alternative to the name brands, I use this as a general purpose, and if the problem persists (which it very rarely does) I then come back w/ a spot treatment w/ the more expensive product. This one does work, and in the greatest majority of cases, never needs a second reapplication. It's a best buy for general purpose use.

QWhat is the outdoor rate of Cyper TC in lawn and around home?
How much should I add for 40 gallons? I have an ATV and would like to spot spray my yard and house. Do I have to add 80 ounces to make it be effective?

AFor treating yards, it is more a measurement of how many ounces per area than ounces per gallon.  For treating a yard, you should apply 1 ounce of Cyper TC per 1000 square feet.  It does not matter if the 1 ounce you are applying is in 1 gallon of water, or 10 gallons of water, it's really however much water it takes to cover a 1000 square feet.  So depending on your sprayer, if it takes you 2 gallons to cover a 10 x 100 square foot area than you would add 1 ounce to every 2 gallons in your sprayer for every 1000 square feet of yard.

QIs Cyper TC safe to use on a property that has a well? Can I use Cyper TC indoors for pest control?
They say don't use this if you have a well, yet you say, "Typically, termiticides like the Cyper TC, have very low solubility in water and they are unlikely to leach out of the treated soil when rainfall or irrigation later contacts said soil. The molecules of the active ingredient tend to bind tightly to the soil particles, and unless the soil itself moves from erosion the Cyper TC will stay put. Cyper TC does not go back into solution when water passes through the treated soil." Is it safe if you have a well? Why is it not safe? Also, can I spray it in the house around my wood baseboards and up my walls in the corner like the insect control guy does? Thanks!

AActually the Cyper TC product label has specific guidelines on how to safely treat termites on properties that have wells. You can find this information starting on page 8 of the product label. Cyper TC is not labeled for use indoors for general pest control and should not be used for this purpose. For indoor general pest control we would recommend Talstar P. Talstar P is labeled for over 75 different pests, can be used indoors and outdoors, is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and won't break down easily with rainfall.

QI want to spray for spiders around our house and yard using the garden hose attachment.
I have had a professional come and they use a long hose and sprayer. They spray the whole house, deck, garage, wooden swing set and our wooden seat swing. I want to do this myself as needed. What product should I use for spiders that I can use with a garden hose for large and tall areas? I was looking at cypermethrin, but it says its for cracks and crevices spot treatment.

A

We do have a liquid formulation of cypermethrin called Cyper TC that should fit your needs very well. Since this is an emulsifiable concentrate, it may cause staining to old vinyl siding so you may want to test a small area if this is an issue for you. If staining is a problem then you could use water based, non staining Talstar P as an alternative. Both products should work just fine in a hose end sprayer.

***Note: We do NOT recommend spraying swing sets or swings of any sort with any type of insecticides. Spraying around the perimeter of the play set area should be sufficient.****

QUsing Cyper TC around water?
We used Cyper TC under our foundation when we built our house in 2005. We ran the sump pump water around a pond in back of our house to avoid any contamination at the time, but are now wondering how long we need to worry about this. Your info says it's effective for 5-7 years so is this the length of time to insure none of the material gets in pond. FYI, we do have the pond stocked and fish from it.

ATypically, termiticides like the Cyper TC, have very low solubility in water and they are unlikely to leach out of the treated soil when rainfall or irrigation later contacts said soil. The molecules of the active ingredient tend to bind tightly to the soil particles, and unless the soil itself moves from erosion the Cyper TC will stay put. Cyper TC does not go back into solution when water passes through the treated soil.

QI've read that Cyper TC works great for fire ant control. Is this true?
I have an infestation of fire ants, and the solutions from Home Depot and Lowe's haven't really touched it. I am looking for a solution to treat an acre or so of land that has been neglected for years and is well established with fire ant colonies. Also, once dried is it safe for small pets?

ACyper TC is labeled for fire ants and will do a good job if you follow the product label. According to the product label, you should apply 1-2 gallons of diluted solution to each mound and treat in the 4 ft diameter immediately around each mound very early in the morning or late in the evening (do not treat in the heat of the day when the ants will likely be very deep an will not contact the insecticide). Pets should be out of the area while you do the treatment and they can safely return as soon as the area is dry.

QWhat is the difference between Cyper TC and Cyper WSP?
Just looking for a good spray to treat against spiders and ants. My bug man said Cyper TC but it looks like the Cyper WP has more of the active ingredient.

A

For general pest control of spiders and ants, Cyper WSP would be best. Cyper WSP contains a higher percentage of active ingredient and will be less likely to leave an oily residue. Cyper TC is meant more for outdoor use against termites and other wood destroying pests.

Does the quality or concentration of this product diminishes if you apply it outside the home in a trench for termite protection today, and then it happens to rain the next day? What happens to the effect against the termites in this case?

AAccording to the Cyper TC label: Applying this product in calm weather when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours will help to ensure that wind or rain does not blow or wash pesticide off the treatment area. Rinsing application equipment over the treated area will help avoid run off to water bodies or drainage systems

QCan Cyper TC be used to control ants on the outside of a building?

ACyper TC is labeled for ant control outdoors but it will only kill the ants that actually cross over the treated surface, it will not kill the colony. Termidor SC is the preferred product for outdoor ant control on buildings because unlike most sprays that kill the ants right away, Termidor has a delayed reaction which allows the ants to carry it back for you and pass it around and eliminate the entire colony.  Termidor is considered to be the best ant control product ever invented and is widely used by professional companies

QHow well does Cyper TC work for ants?
I am wondering how effective this product is at controlling red ants, crazy ants, sugar ants, etc. Does it leave a residual to continue to kill them for months at a time? How far out do I need to spray around my house? Also most importantly what is the mixture rate for 10 gal tank? The pest man came to my house to use this stuff and on the ticket he used 8 oz for a 50 gal tank, is that safe is that 25.3% cyper tc or is it weaker?

A

Cyper TC is labeled for ant around the outside perimter of a structure and it will kill ants that come into direct contact with the treated surface. Cyper TC will not kill the ants that are back at the nest (For this type of effect we recommend Termidor SC). According to the Cyper TC product label:

BARRIER TREATMENT: Apply 0.1% (5.1 oz product per gallon of water) to a band of soil and vegetation 6 to 10 feet wide around and adjacent to the structure. Also, treat the foundation of the structure to a height of 2 to 3 feet. Use a treatment volume of 2 to 10 gallons per 1,000 square feet. Higher volumes of water may be needed if mulch or leaf litter is present or dense foliage exists. House siding may be treated if boxelder bugs, elm leaf beetles, earwigs, silverfish or other similar pests are present.

QHow do I make a .1% emulsion for general pest control as recommended on the product label?
The Cyper TC product label refers to a .1% emulsion rate several times throughout the label but the dilution rate chart does not list a .1% emulsion rate. Could this be a typo in the wording and they actually mean 1.00% or did they just not list this emulsion rate on the chart?

AThe manufacturer, Control Solutions, is aware of this discrepancy. The label actually does mean .1% emulsion even though they do not mention this dilution rate on the dilution table. To make a .1% emulsion of Cyper TC you will need to use .51 oz of Cyper TC plus enough water to make 1 gallon of finished solution.
