How Does DeTour For Rodents Work?
Detour Rodent Repellent carries white pepper as its active ingredient. Its mode of action against rodents is irritation of the white pepper-sensitive primary afferent fibers in the nerve-endings of the ureter. DeTour will not harm the rodents. It simply irritates the nerve-endings and gives the rodent a negative experience that causes them to look for the exits. If used on the exterior around rodent entry point rodents will be discouraged from ever entering.
How is DeTour For Rodents Applied?
Detour rodent repellent can be brushed on or applied in a thick one-half inch bead. The thicker it is applied the longer and more effective the product will last on the surface to which it is applied. Rodents need to pick up the product on their feet and carry it with them - they will track the gel and white pepper along the path they travel and back to their den exposing the other rats to the white pepper and driving them out of the areas they are inhabiting.
Interior – Apply DeTour to any areas where rodent droppings are found or where rodents are currently active. Rubs, runways, food sources, pipe chases, wall voids, holes, ceilings or any areas where rodents may come in contact with the product.
DeTour Repel-Trays are pre-packaged trays of product that may be placed anywhere rodents are active. Simply place them where rodents will contact the trays.
DeTour may be applied in current rodent equipment like bait-stations or rodent boxes. Keep it covered in areas where humans may come in contact. DeTour may be applied directly to floor areas, wall voids, etc if there is no potential for human contact. DeTour may be placed on devices like 16 oz soda lids or waxed cardboard cutouts for temporary applications when the product will need to be removed at some point or for cleanout situations. DeTour is great in areas where regular service is difficult, ie. under grocery store gondolas, shelves, racks and other inaccessible locations. A bead of DeTour under these racks with create a rodent No-Go zone. If there are active rodent infestations under gondolas DeTour may be used to force the rodents away from the middle of the store.
Exterior –Use DeTour as a barrier placed in contact with the structure. Use a bead of DeTour to prevent rodent entry at any potential rodent entry point. A bead of detour around the entire perimeter where the siding meets the foundation and around any potential entry points will prevent rodents from entering the structure at these points.
Can I use Traps and Trapping Equipment at the same time?
Field trials indicate that DeTour enhances trapping strategies! The stress response to DeTour causes confusion and subsequently changes the rodent’s neo-phobic responses allowing them to be caught in traps more easily. In many cases it might make sense to actually add more rodent trapping equipment.
How long with DeTour last?
DeTour is very durable and will last indefinitely in undisturbed areas such as wall voids or under shelves in dry areas. Under heavy rodent infestations, animals will carry the product away and reapplication may be required.
Areas of heavy cleaning will require additional monitoring to insure the product has not been washed away.
Can I use DeTour for Rodent Monitoring purposes?
DeTour is formulated as a gel. Any time a rodent comes in contact with the product they will leave marks in the product thus making it an excellent monitoring tool.

By Nancy on September 8, 2012I have used an entire tube of DeTour Bio-Repellent on the post of a large bird feeder with no results. Well one squirrel did leave a piece of his tail behind.

So far so good against squirrels
By Collin on February 21, 2013
Verified PurchaseAfter having blocked off re-entry via a one way trap and placing wire mesh all around the immediate area, we placed DeTour on other close by potential entry places. They can't enter their old way and it must be awfully bothersome to create a new entry. The squirrels are not happy, and they are NOT inside anymore, either.

QHow long does an application of DeTour For Rodents Bio-Repellent last?
Does application need continuous line or can it b intermittent in order to create a barrier? Indoor and Outdoor?
AWhen DeTour For Rodents Bio-Repellent is applied according to the product label, rodents will be repelled for at least 30 days or longer if the product is left intact and undisturbed. Reapplications will be required on an as needed basis in areas with a large rodent infestation or where the product has been disturbed or removed by rodent contact. This means that you should check application areas every few weeks to make sure it is still on the surface. Do not to apply DeTour For Rodents Bio-Repellent directly to porous surfaces as it can be absorbed by the surface which can lower the overall efficacy of the product. DeTour can be applied indoors and outdoors directly around areas where rodent activity has been noticed and any area where rodents can gain access to a structure (doorways, windows, vents, utility lines). You can see the full DeTour instructions by reading the product label.

QIs DeTour safe around dogs & cats?
ADeTour is a bio repellent and contains an ingredient that irritates rodents and makes them exit the building or home, but does not harm them. If your pet got into this product, it would not harm them, but it would also irritate them just like the rodents. You should only place this product where your pets cannot access it, but rodents can. Places such as behind appliances, in wall voids, entry points (small holes) where rodents enter, etc.
