Dismiss Turf Herbicide - Questions & Answers

The mixing ratio for Dismiss Herbicide depends on the type of grass you are treating on. For cool season grasses, the rate is 0.092-0.18 fl. oz. of product per gallon of water. For warm season grasses, you will use 0.18-0.275 fl. oz. of product per gallon of water.

You do not have to water in Dismiss after application since you are applying it with water already.  If you can go 24 hours before watering then that would be ideal. Dismiss will be rainfast 4 hours after application.

Dismiss Turf Herbicide is a selective post only emergent product that is meant to be used on sedge and kyllinga weeds.  It is labeled for most warm and cool season turf grasses.  Since this is a post emergent product, you should apply it whenever you see signs of sedge or other weeds as permitted on the label.  You should always read the label first to make sure it is ok to use on your type of grass. Dismiss Turf Herbicide should be used within 3 years of the date of purchase to insure best results.

The reason that herbicides do no list a specific amount per gallon of water is because the dilution rate is different for everybody.  It depends on what equipment you are using.  The more important thing is how much of the product is placed out over 1000 square feet. 

When applying herbicides, we always recommend using calibrated equipment, rather than hose-end sprayers, to avoid uneven application or damage to desirable plants. Most herbicide labels will list how much active ingredient should be used per 1,000 square feet. To calibrate your equipment, for example, a 1 gallon sprayer, mark off an area of 1,000 square feet, and cover that area at your normal pace as evenly as possible. If you used the entire gallon, you would use the recommended amount in 1 gallon of water. If you only use ½ gallon to cover the 1000 square feet then you mix the recommended amount on the product label in a 1/2 gallon of water.  So if an acre is basically 44,000 square feet and the product label calls for 5 ounces per acre for fescue, and you used 1 gallon to cover 1000 square feet, then you would mix 5 ounces of Dismiss in 44 gallons of water.  Ultimately, correct timing and application rates are more important than how much water is used to apply your herbicides.

Generally, we recommend mowing your lawn 2 days before application and no sooner than 2 days after application to mow again. 

According to the Dismiss Turf product label, you can reapply the Dismiss 35 days after the first application to ensure no harm to your lawn and acheive better control of the hearty weeds in the lawn.

You should not use Dismiss in temperatures above 85 degrees or below freezing. Weeds must be actively growing for Dismiss to work properly. Be sure to read the Dismiss product label for complete usage instructions.

If you only need a small amount of product to control purple or yellow nutsedge, then you may want to consider Sedgehammer Herbicide, which comes in individual packets that can be diluted in 1 gallon of water at a time.

You would need to keep your dog out of the treated area until it has a chance to fully dry. Once it has dried complete, maybe a couple of hours, then it is safe for your dog to re-enter the treated area.

Dismiss Turf  is absorbed through the foliage and into the root system. It will kill the root of Star of Bethlehem. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Once Dismiss has been mixed with water, it should be used or discarded within 24 hours.

Dismiss can safely be used on a lawn where pets frequent as long as the product label is followed and the pets are out of the area during the application. Pets can safely return after the application has dried.

Dismiss Turf is safe for dogs after the treated area has dried.

You should not use more than 12 oz. per acre of Dismiss Turf Herbicide per year. At the application rate for St. Augustine and Centipede grass, if you do applications every 30 days or so, it will depend on how much area you are treating.

Dismiss Turf Herbicide should only be applied to established sod, generally at least 3 months after installation and not within 3 months of harvesting new sod, per the product label. Keep in mind that Dismiss may cause temporary discoloration on sensitive grasses such as Floratam. Since this is just a post-emergent herbicide, it would not be applied to bare ground before sod is installed.

Unfortunately, the Dismiss Turf Herbicide is not labeled to treat for crabgrass. Drive XLR8 is an excellent post-emergent herbicide to kill existing crabgrass. It is safe to use on most types of turf, but not all. Please refer to the product label for indications on what turf this may be applied to.
