Do I need to re-stump the tree to use Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer?

I cut down a (type unknown) tree 6 days ago. Ready to apply the Fertilome Stump Killer now. Can I apply to the existing stump or has too much time passed and should I cut the stump down some more to get to "live" wood.
