4 of 5 stars  Hard to find but worth it
By Jb in Billings, MT on 04/25/2013

Pre-emergent other than corn gluten is hard to find these days but it's worth it. We've used it for a few years now and it does a good job of keeping our neighbors' 10,000 dandilions out of our yard. Much better than weed-n-feed POST-emergent.

3 of 5 stars  good service

Can't say much about the product yet. First application was in spring (2013) so I haven't really given it a chance, but it does look promising. Will re-apply next spring so I will know more by mid summer (2014). Can say that the service at Do My Own Pest Control is quite fast. Had the product just a few days after ordering and now have enough on hand to last a couple years. Only gave three stars because I still don't know how well the product works. Service is 5 star.

  • 5 of 5 stars  Fertilome Preemergent
By Sara in Fairfax Va on 09/05/2016

I use this product at my home in VA on my fescue and at my Dad's in GA on his Bermuda/centipede. It has saved me more hous in weeding than I can say. I apply it in VA in Early winter, spring, and sometimes summer. I used to have seas of chickweed, lespedeza, blossom weed, spurge, corn speedwell, dandelions- you name it. Not now. Tip- apply two strips on edges. They get the wear and that's the weak link. I did Dad's house in GA for the first time this year. This product has is the only ingredient that the extension site says stops chamberbitter. We will see! I am also hoping it helps with Carolina Geranium too. I will update this later to say. Shipping from this site was great. Prompt and well packed.

QWhich is a better pre-emergeent herbicide between Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery and XL 2G?
I already plan to use Dimension (Pennington's) for crabgrass prevention.

AAs far as effectiveness, both the Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery and the XL 2G will give you exceptional results on broadleaf weed and some annual grass control. The Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery is my personal preference because of the great price. It's the most bang for your buck. However, to give you more of a precise answer we would need to know the weeds you are wanting to kill and where you plan on using the pre-emergent.

QWhat is Gallery? Does this product contain fertilizer?

A

Gallery is a brand name of a pre-emergent herbicide. Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery is not a fertilizer but is instead just a pre-emergent herbicide granule. If you are looking for an herbicide with a fertilizer you can check out our Weed and Feed page:

QReference to eliminating Chamber Bitter
Can applying Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery keep Chamber Bitter from growing in my Fescue lawn? I live in Raleigh, NC and would like to know if this will work.

AWe have spoken with the manufacturer of Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery and they have confirmed that it will work for Chamber Bitter but that is a very difficult weed to control.   The active ingredient Isoxaben is the only pre-emergent that is labeled to control it though.

QThe Local Extension Service recommends Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Control for Chamberbitter in ornamental beds.
Do you recommend applying to bare ground before mulching? Will it be effective applied in March, when Chamberbitter sprouts in May?

A

Yes, it is recommended Fertilome Broadlaf Weed Control with Gallery will work best when put below the mulch layer. Do not apply pre-emergence herbicides in beds where new plants will be installed, as plant root development may be inhibited.

Depending on the region you are in, March is usually a good time to apply pre-emergents. Because preemergence herbicides prevent seedlings from developing, they are an effective tool against annual weeds. However, they will not affect established weeds. Timing is critical. They must be applied prior to seed germination. Please check with the Local Extension office for exact time in your region that is good to apply pre-emergents.

QIs Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery good for Fall and Winter treatment for weeds in Centipede?
I plan to use Dimension (Pennington's) for crabgrass prevention in the spring, and Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery in the Fall. Is that a good solution for fighting crabgrass and spurge through out year?

A

You can use either Dimension 2EW or Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery for spurge prevention, however Dimension is a much better pre-emergent for crabgrass, especially in turf. You can do a split application with Dimension for more control year-round; please refer to the product label for application rates and instructions. The Ferti-Lome with Gallery will only give partial control or suppress crabgrass, per the product label. For spurge control, good lawn maintenance including mulching beds, keeping adequate soil moisture, and fertilizing will help to control them. Also, hand pulling when weeds are small will help to minimize seed deposits.

You can also view our Lawn Care Schedule for Warm Season Grasses for more information about your general care schedule for Centipede turf.

QCan I use Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Control on my jasmine ground cover?
There are several weeds that I am no longer able to control them by hand. I would like something that would kill the majority and not hurt the jasmine.

A

Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Contol with Gallery can be applied to lawns and landscaped ornamentals. We recommend Snapshot 2.5 TG as it would be a good choice for a broad spectrum pre-emergent around Asiatic Jasmine. Fusilade II should be used if you need a broad spectrum post-emergent selective herbicide. We highly suggest getting the weeds and/or grasses properly identified by your cooperative extension Master Gardener to ensure any of these products will be the best fit.

QAnything specificto use to rid yard of dandelions w/o harming grass
I do not want to use 2,4D or MCPP. Is there anything I can use to rid my yard of dandelions without killing my grass? I live in zip code 51561. I live in rural country.

ACan you please tell us what kind of grass you have that the dandelions are coming up in and how much area you are looking to treat? Are there any other weeds you want to eliminate that you know you have in particular? This information will help us find the best answer for you so that we can find a product that will not kill your lawn but will control the dandelions.

QWill Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery kill Burning Nettle?
I live in South LA and I have been fighting Burning Nettle for years. Will this product eliminate my problem? I've sprayed glyphosate and 2-4D. The nettle will die but comes right back with a vengeance. I do understand timing is critical. Please HELP!!!!

AUnfortunately, Ferti-Lome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery is not labeled to control Burning Nettle. We would recommend Gallery 75 DF to control the germination of Burning Nettle. Gallery 75 DF (DF stands for Dry Flowable) prevents the growth of Burning Nettle and other listed broadleaf weeds for up to eight months and is labeled for use on all established cool-season and warm-season turfgrass types.

We need more information in order to answer your question properly. Is your grass literally burning or are you speaking of a particular weed? What type of turf do you have? Are you looking for a pre or post emergent?

We need to know exactly what you are dealing with in order to properly answer your question. These questions should give us a better understanding of what you are doing.

QWhat is the application rate for Fertilome Broadleaf Weed control?
It is labeled for use under and around shrubs, but I can only find application rate for rotary spreader on turf. I need to apply around established shrubs in a large bed by hand to avoid getting product on shrub surface. Can you give me some guidance on how much to apply?

AWe would recommend using the Gordons Spred- Rite G Gravity Flow Granule Spreader. The flow of granules is controlled by orifice disks and the exclusive deflector plate. The spreader carries 5 pounds of granules and functions by gravity. Swath widths can be adjusted from 2 to 4 inches and up to 3 feet. Rate can be easily varied by adjusting walking speed, by shifting swath width, and by choice from 3 orifices. A minimum rate of 4.6lb of Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery per 1,000sq feet is recommended for optimum results, so depending on how big the large bed is determines how much you will need to adjust for your application. You may contact the manufacturer VPG at 1-888-583-5296 for specific application rates.
