This Over the Top II is a great product that works very well as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. You must use an oil additive with it, such as Spreader Sticker, because all grass, even crab grass, has a waxy coating that causes water and chemicals to bead up and run off, thus greatly reducing the effectiveness of any chemical. I used Spreader Sticker with the Over the Top II and all of the crab grass that I sprayed had stopped growing after 24 hours and was completely dead within 10 days. Of course I sprayed the crab grass when it was still relatively small. It also worked, with the same result, on the Bermuda grass I sprayed.

Did the job
By Charles in Foley,AL on 10/13/2012
Have been looking for something to get rid of the Bermudia grass in my lawn without killing my Cenipede grass. Tried this product and it eliminated the problem. It did so well that some of my neighbors saw what happened to my lawn and now they are using this product as well.

I am currently using this product to kill the grass that is growing in my Strawberry Groundcover. It looks like it is working. I was dubious, since I could not find an Ortho or Monsanto product that claimed to kill grass but leave groundcover unharmed. However, I am also incredibly lazy, so I decided to try it. It works.

Using to kill crabgrass in Centipede grass. Product seems to be working. It's been about a week and weeds started yellowing. My yard has gotten very infested with crabgrass. But this seems to be working. Lawn is still alive.

I bought more only because I missed spots with the 1st bottle. Takes about 2 weeks to kill the bermuda grass in my centipede. As I walk around the yard I see I'll have to buy another bottle, but it works!

Fertilome over the top II grass killer
By Oliver in Yulee, Fl on 10/24/2012
I have used this product about weeks ago and it appears to be knocking down the bermuda grass with no apparent damage to my St. Augustine. I also used it in my front yard where I had the bermuda coming into my newly installed Zenith Zoysia. I just tried a small area, but it appears safe for the Zoysia as well.

Needs to be mixed with Oil Concentrate
By Tom in Hamilton, MA on 08/18/2012
I thought it would be just a matter of mixing with water, but the directions say to mix with "oil concentrate". I now see that it's mentioned in bold red font on the website, not sure how I missed it. After some research I found that this refers to Non-Ionic Surfactant for Herbicides which I'm sure would have worked great, but I really wanted to get this stuff applied as the weeds were choking out my low lying juniper plants. I didn't want to wait another week to get it, and it's not cheap, so I mixed it with Jet-Dry for dishwashers. It's the non-ionic property that is important, but many farmers just use laundry detergent or dish-washing liquid which is not non-ionic as it's far cheaper. I applied it 2 weeks ago and have not noticed any significant change. I called Do My Own Pest Control and left a message 5 days ago and never heard back from them. Fertilome has no customer support that I could find.

I used the Fertilome Over The Top II Grass Killer with the Surfactant by the instructions on the label. It got rid of 95% of the weedy grass that was growing in my Juniper ground cover. I will make one more application and it should get rid of all the weedy grass. The products were shipped quickly and I received them sooner than I expected.

Wire grass killer
By Peter in Edinburg, VA on 06/08/2012
Used this material over a very heavy wire grass infested area in our garden to reclaim 2 beds to use this year. It killed the wire grass completely. Used a commercial surfactant in place of "spray oil" (cheaper per oz). Does NOT control any broadleaf weeds so will have to repeat with Roundup. Did not work well where I sprayed lightly so will cover heavier next time. Will use again .

Didn't seem to work for me
By Bill in Cornelius, OR on 06/23/2011
We have an area along a RR Track that is mixed periwinkle and weeds, mostly grasses and grain. When I tried it I saw no kill or even yellowing after 3 weeks of cool weather. I would try it again but we are now into summer and natural die back. I will try it again a little earlier next year. I really hope it works because it would solve a big problem here.

QRecommended Weed Killer for flower bed and around tree/shrubs?
I have a lot weeds in my shrub bed and I would like to use something that would kill the weeds but not the trees and shrubs.
AWe do carry a few products that can be used in flower beds and around trees and shrubs. Fertilome Over The Top Grass Killer (post emergent), Hi Yield Weed and Grass Stopper (pre-emergent) and Dimension 2EW (pre-emergent) and several others. We recommend you identify the weeds you are having issues with before selecting a product as most products only work for the weeds they list on their product labels. You can contact your local cooperative extension office and speak to the master gardener on staff if you need help identifying weeds. The master gardener can also tell you what type of herbicide will work best in your region right now (pre or post emergent) and won't damage your ornamental plants. Always be sure to read the product label of the product you select before purchasing to make sure the weeds you are trying to eliminate are listed and the ornamental plants you have are listed as a species that is tolerant to the herbicide. All product labels (for the products we carry) can be found on the individual product pages under the pictures of the product.
QWhat is the oil concentrate that is mentioned in mixing instructions?
AThe oil concentrate is a surfactant. Most herbicides should always be mixed with a non-ionic surfactant. This is because since grass and plants have waxy coatings on them, most herbicides that are mixed with water do not stick very well to this waxy coating. Adding a surfactant breaks down the wax on the grass or ornamentals and allows the solution to stick and work much better. We sell the non-ionic surfactant on our website and it is also linked on the Fertilome Over-The-Top page.

QWhat is a post emergent herbicide that controls grassy and broad leaf weeds in asiatic jasmine?
AYou could use a product like Fertilome Over The Top II grass killer to control any grassy weeds currently coming up in the asiatic jasmine ground cover that you have. There are not any post emergent products that can be broadcast over ground covers or ornamentals for broad leaf weeds that wont harm everything you spray it over. You would have to hand pull or spot spray with round up on any broadleaf weeds coming up in the jasmine. To prevent having to treat with a post emergent throughout the year, you can treat with a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent both grassy and broad leaf weeds from coming up in your jasmine. One of our best products for that would be Snapshot.

QLooking for a selective Herbice to use in my flower garden that will kill Grass and Weeds.
I have a few Garden areas for flowers. I have bulb area that has Daffodils, Lily, Iris, Hyacinths. I also have many Perennials throughout my various Garden areas. I am hoping something will kill grass and weeds but not harm my flowers.
AWe do carry a few products that can be used in flower beds, gardens, and around trees and shrubs that kills a variety of grass and grassy weeds. Fertilome Over The Top Grass Killer mixed with a Non Ionic Surfactant would be a great selective herbicide that can be used as a post emergent to kill actively growing weeds. However, we strongly recommend you identify the weeds you are having issues with before selecting a product as most products only work for the weeds and/or grass they list on their product labels. QCan Over the Top II be safely used on Empire zoisia yards to kill weed grasses?
AOver the top is intended to kill grass like bermuda and zoysia in ornamental beds. To get rid of grassy weeds out of zoysia we recommend using Certainty which is a selective herbicide that will kill weeds and not your grass.

QWill Over the Top kill grasses growing in sweet woodruff, black-eyed susans, and hostas?
These plants were not listed on the product label
AOver The Top II is listed for black eyed Susans so there shouldn't be a problem using the product as directed on the product label around this plant. Since Over The Top II does not list hostas or sweet woodruff we would recommend the product be applied around not over these plants. If that's not doable then don't use the product on those plants without testing them for tolerance on a few plants before wide scale use.
QWill your red mite spray end this insect including its nest/home?
I have red mites on my sidewalk, front steps, around my swimming pool, on the plastic chairs and other outside furniture.
AFertilome Red Spider and Mite Spray can help you kill the spider mites but it is mainly meant for use on plants. Red Spider and Mite spray will only kill the mites that are present when you do the actual application and it will not be transported back to their nest or harborage areas. We recommend you use a product that will leave a residual such as Talstar P. Talstar P can last for up to 1 month outdoors and can be used in all of the areas indicated except for the furniture. Talstar P will not be transported back to their harborage either but it will keep killing the mites that walk on the treated area for up to one month.
