Over the Top II Grass Killer is a selective systemic grass killer to eliminate existing weedy grasses growing in and around plant beds, landscapes, and individual shrubs and trees. It can be used through a hose-end sprayer according to the directions of the sprayer used or through a tank-type sprayer. Over the Top II can also be used around listed fruit and vegetable areas, see label, wherever listed weedy grasses occur. Use only tank-type sprayer.
Over the Top II kills most annual and hard-to-kill perennial grasses up to 1 foot high, including the examples listed below in one or two applications. Younger, actively growing seedling weeds are more easily killed than older, mature, well-established grassy weeds which may require a repeat application for control. Adding oil concentrate may help control of grassy weeds.

- Crabgrass - Large, Smooth
- Fall Panicum
- Foxtails - Giant, Green, Yellow
- Johnsongrass - Seedling, Rhizome
- Orchardgrass - Seedling
- Tall Fescue - Seedling
- Texas Panicum
- Wild Proso Millet

This Over the Top II is a great product that works very well as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. You must use an oil additive with it, such as Spreader Sticker, because all grass, even crab grass, has a waxy coating that causes water and chemicals to bead up and run off, thus greatly reducing the effectiveness of any chemical. I used Spreader Sticker with the Over the Top II and all of the crab grass that I sprayed had stopped growing after 24 hours and was completely dead within 10 days. Of course I sprayed the crab grass when it was still relatively small. It also worked, with the same result, on the Bermuda grass I sprayed.

Did the job

Have been looking for something to get rid of the Bermudia grass in my lawn without killing my Cenipede grass. Tried this product and it eliminated the problem. It did so well that some of my neighbors saw what happened to my lawn and now they are using this product as well.

I am currently using this product to kill the grass that is growing in my Strawberry Groundcover. It looks like it is working. I was dubious, since I could not find an Ortho or Monsanto product that claimed to kill grass but leave groundcover unharmed. However, I am also incredibly lazy, so I decided to try it. It works.

This takes care of the grass without damaging my wife's perennials and moss.
Not sure if it works.

It has been almost 3 weeks since I sprayed this. It seems like the weeds have stopped growing but they are not dead. I used this with the spreader sticker on newly planted Asian jasmine, which survived the spray. Was hoping the weeds would be dead by now. I previously pulled weeds in one area and sprayed there afterward. There are no weeds growing there now.

Bought to eradicate extensive amounts of crabgrass and stilt grass that had invaded my Tall Fescue lawn (or what was left of the lawn). Sprayed this mixed with Spreader-Sticker in a pump sprayer before the crabgrass went to seed. Stopped all growth (haven't had to mow at all) and starting turning brown within 3 days. After a week, every crabgrass was brown or well on it's way. Lawn looks like heck (no more green) but the lack of rain hasn't helped either. Next up is aeration and overseed. Raleigh NC

I bought this to control Bermuda in my centipede lawn. It has been two weeks from application day and the Bermuda has been knocked way back. It may take 1 to 2 applications to achieve total control but my centipede is unharmed. That being said I am pleased with the product.

Using to kill crabgrass in Centipede grass. Product seems to be working. It's been about a week and weeds started yellowing. My yard has gotten very infested with crabgrass. But this seems to be working. Lawn is still alive.

I bought more only because I missed spots with the 1st bottle. Takes about 2 weeks to kill the bermuda grass in my centipede. As I walk around the yard I see I'll have to buy another bottle, but it works!

Fertilome over the top II grass killer
By Oliver in Yulee, Fl on 10/24/2012
I have used this product about weeks ago and it appears to be knocking down the bermuda grass with no apparent damage to my St. Augustine. I also used it in my front yard where I had the bermuda coming into my newly installed Zenith Zoysia. I just tried a small area, but it appears safe for the Zoysia as well.

I mixed it according to the label, along with spreader, sprayed on some weeds and grass, it killed both. What's up with that? I will try again, maybe I mixed it wrong.

Needs to be mixed with Oil Concentrate
By Tom in Hamilton, MA on 08/18/2012
I thought it would be just a matter of mixing with water, but the directions say to mix with "oil concentrate". I now see that it's mentioned in bold red font on the website, not sure how I missed it. After some research I found that this refers to Non-Ionic Surfactant for Herbicides which I'm sure would have worked great, but I really wanted to get this stuff applied as the weeds were choking out my low lying juniper plants. I didn't want to wait another week to get it, and it's not cheap, so I mixed it with Jet-Dry for dishwashers. It's the non-ionic property that is important, but many farmers just use laundry detergent or dish-washing liquid which is not non-ionic as it's far cheaper. I applied it 2 weeks ago and have not noticed any significant change. I called Do My Own Pest Control and left a message 5 days ago and never heard back from them. Fertilome has no customer support that I could find.

QRecommended Weed Killer for flower bed and around tree/shrubs?
I have a lot weeds in my shrub bed and I would like to use something that would kill the weeds but not the trees and shrubs.
AWe do carry a few products that can be used in flower beds and around trees and shrubs. Fertilome Over The Top Grass Killer (post emergent), Hi Yield Weed and Grass Stopper (pre-emergent) and Dimension 2EW (pre-emergent) and several others. We recommend you identify the weeds you are having issues with before selecting a product as most products only work for the weeds they list on their product labels. You can contact your local cooperative extension office and speak to the master gardener on staff if you need help identifying weeds. The master gardener can also tell you what type of herbicide will work best in your region right now (pre or post emergent) and won't damage your ornamental plants. Always be sure to read the product label of the product you select before purchasing to make sure the weeds you are trying to eliminate are listed and the ornamental plants you have are listed as a species that is tolerant to the herbicide. All product labels (for the products we carry) can be found on the individual product pages under the pictures of the product.
QWhat is the oil concentrate that is mentioned in mixing instructions?
AThe oil concentrate is a surfactant. Most herbicides should always be mixed with a non-ionic surfactant. This is because since grass and plants have waxy coatings on them, most herbicides that are mixed with water do not stick very well to this waxy coating. Adding a surfactant breaks down the wax on the grass or ornamentals and allows the solution to stick and work much better. We sell the non-ionic surfactant on our website and it is also linked on the Fertilome Over-The-Top page.

QHow does Fertilome Over the Top II Grass Killer affect Bermudagrass? Will it affect tall fescue?
I want to kill some Bermuda grass in my yard, but have tall fescue mixed in with it. Will it kill the Bermuda grass and leave the fescue alone or will it kill the fescue also? Thanks!
A Fertilome Over the Top II is a grass killer so it will bermudagrass and tall fescue grass. Bermuda would be considered a grassy weed, so you need a product that is geared towards grassy weeds and not broadleaf weeds.† We want to be clear that bermuda can be suppressed, but it is VERY difficult to kill completely.† It will take multiple treatments to finally kill it.† But Fusilade II is usually the go to product for this issue.† This is directly off of the product label: Apply 0.07-0.14 oz/1000 sq. ft. (3-6 oz./A) along with 0.25% v/v (1/2 pt./25 gals.) of a nonionic surfactant. Application should be made every 28 days when the grass weeds are actively growing. The higher rates may result in temporary discolorization of the desirable turf with recovery in 10-14 days. Do not apply to desirable turf which is under stress. For best results, make applications in spring and fall and avoid treatments during July and August. We also recommend calling your local county extension office as they usually know the optimum times for spraying lawns in your area.
Complete control of undesirable grass may take 1-2 growing seasons.

QWhat is a post emergent herbicide that controls grassy and broad leaf weeds in asiatic jasmine?
AYou could use a product like Fertilome Over The Top II grass killer to control any grassy weeds currently coming up in the asiatic jasmine ground cover that you have. There are not any post emergent products that can be broadcast over ground covers or ornamentals for broad leaf weeds that wont harm everything you spray it over. You would have to hand pull or spot spray with round up on any broadleaf weeds coming up in the jasmine. To prevent having to treat with a post emergent throughout the year, you can treat with a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent both grassy and broad leaf weeds from coming up in your jasmine. One of our best products for that would be Snapshot.
