Fruit Fly Traps

Fruit fly traps are one of the best tools to use against these prolific pests. Fruit fly traps allow you to lure in adult flies, as well as pinpoint problem areas. Most fruit fly traps and baits are non-insecticidal, so they’re safe to use around food and in food preparation areas, making them perfect for fruit fly control.

How To Use Fruit Fly Traps

Fruit fly traps can be very helpful in trapping and killing your fruit fly population quickly and effectively. Almost all fruit fly traps are very easy to use and very safe for use in your home, even your kitchen, but with these tips you will know how to trap fruit flies successfully.

  • When trapping fruit flies, it is very important to clean up and eliminate all possible food sources and breeding sites in your home. Any fermenting organic matter, like fruit and vegetables, fruit juice, beer, wine, etc attracts fruit flies.
  • Clean up spills, sanitize sink and drain, rinse out recyclable containers, make sure garbage cans are rinsed out, and even clean under refrigerator. If you leave these sites as they are, control will be impossible, as the life cycle of the fruit fly can continue.
  • Do not store perishable fruits on the counter. Keep them in a sealed container or in the refrigerator.
  • Most traps use a food grade lure that is non-toxic. The fruit flies are attracted to the bait and enter the trap, but once they enter they aren’t able to escape, and eventually they’ll drown in the liquid lure.
  • Choose the best fruit fly trap and lure system for you. There are self-contained units, meaning they include a container already filled with a lure, like Vector 960 Fruit Fly Traps or Natural Catch Plus Fruit Fly Traps.
  • Gels that can be placed on glue boards, like InVite Fruit Fly Lure and liquid lure to put in your own containers, like InVite Liquid Lure are alternatives to the self-contained trap units.
  • You can use several traps at once, but read the label for specific instructions.
  • Many traps remain effective for several weeks, but should be changed if liquid evaporates or is very full of dead insects.
  • You can use a household insecticide spray to kill any flies present, but they are not long lasting and won’t solve the issue of the infestation.
  • Homemade fruit fly traps can be made with household items, but they can be messy and they don’t always work. The fruit fly traps we carry have been specially designed and developed to work against fruit fly infestations every time.
