Havahart Cage Trap - Model 1079
  • Alternate Image 1

The Havahart #1079 cage trap measures 32" x 10" x 12" trap and is suitable for trapping armadillos, racoons and groundhogs (woodchucks). Easy to bait, set and release, this high tensil wire mesh trap is steel reinforced for long life and maximum resistance to damage. The smooth inside edges are for the protection of the animal, while the gravity-action door has sensitive triggers to ensure a quick, secure catch. Click on the "product label" link under the picture to the left for use instructions.

General Trapping Tips

2 Door Trap The following tips should be used when preparing to live catch your nuisance animal.

Havahart recommends that you contact the Humane Society, or the local or state game commission before setting a trap to determine the lawful method of releasing a captured wild or nuisance animal. Many species are protected by law in various states.

Following the instructions contained in the carton, you may want to test the trap and spring it a few times to make sure that it works properly. For example, spring it by touching the trip plate from each end, This should be done also after the trap has been set and camouflaged to make sure it works freely. If you feel the doors do not work fast enough, place small stones or other weights on top of the door. This will cause doors to drop faster.

When you receive the trap it will be bright and new. Therefore do not be discouraged in case you do not catch what you anticipated the first night or day. The effectiveness of Havahart traps usually improve with age. Some animals do not mind a new trap while others do. So instead of setting the trap to catch the first animal to come along, bait the trap, or simply place it where you intend to set it and fasten the doors open by means of a stick or wire.

After a couple of days, when you notice the bait has been disturbed or taken, it is time to set the trap. Camouflaging the trap is an effective means to entice the animal. Place twigs and leaves all over the trap to remove a lot of the glare from the trap. You can even spray it with water and throw dirt on it to give it a conditioned look. Animals will not be discouraged from entering the trap by the smell of your handling the trap or from supposed machine/oil odors in the manufacturing process.

Top Trapping Tips

  • Be aware of weather conditions. Trapped animals should not be left out in the elements as they can die from prolonged exposure to heat and cold.
  • Check traps FREQUENTLY. Wild animals stress easily and may seriously injure themselves as they attempt to escape.
  • Other animals besides the target animal may get caught in the trap. If this happens, advice on releasing it safely can be obtained from a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in your state.
  • Depending on the time of year, you may trap a nursing mother and if you relocate only her, her babies will not survive. To see if you've trapped a nursing female, stand the trap on one end to observe the belly.
  • Traps should be washed, disinfected with a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts of water and let it remain on for 20 minutes), and thoroughly rinsed after each capture to stop the spread of any potential disease. Animals frequently defecate and urinate when captured and it is unhealthy to put bait down unless trap is cleaned thoroughly.

The following are good bait suggestions for groundhogs:

  • Fresh string beans
  • Sweet corn
  • Lettuce
  • Peas
  • Cantaloupe
  • Strawberries
  • Cucumbers
  • Peaches
  • Vanilla extract

The following are good bait suggestions for raccoons:

  • Fish, fresh or canned
  • Honey or sugar covered vegetables
  • Smoked fish
  • Watermelon
  • Sweet corn
  • Cooked fatty meat
  • Crisp bacon
  • Marshmallow is a favorite

5 of 5 stars  The trap works GREAT!
By Serg in Layton, NJ on 09/03/2010

The trap arrived very soon, set it up with a trail of sliced apples that afternoon and the next morning I had my groundhog! The trap worked GREAT; I couldn’t believe how easy I trapped the groundhog that was causing a mess under my shed and in my garden. The only thing the instructions are tricky to read for the first time and the release of the animal is not as simple as the instructions say. I don't want my hands or my body near the cage when releasing a wild trapped animal.

1 of 5 stars  DOES NOT WORK
By Debra in Lawrenceville, GA 30043 on 12/06/2012
    Verified Purchase

Please do not waste your money on this cage. IT DOES NOT WORK. We followed the instructions and even called the company for suggestions and tried everything they told us. Still did not work. Every time the cage would be closed and not animal of any kind inside. WORST yet, the company would not agree to reimburse us the money or even consider giving us a store credit. I would not use this product or this company again.

When trapping an Armadillo it was able to bend the door lock and get out. I had it reinforced by machine shop and have caught 3 since with no problems.

    5 of 5 stars  We caught 2!

Wow this trap really works. We were trying to get rid of a possum in our entryway. We were quoted $399 for a company to come out & bait for 3 days. I found this trap @ domyownpestcontrol & was very pleased. The next night we baited & woke up to find our possum. We let him go several miles away & my husband baited it again. We were so surprised to find another, bigger possum the next morning! It was really easy to use! 5 stars!

I bought a Havahart Cage for a ground hog that was making very large tunnels around my home. I put cut fruit (apple and banana) in the cage near one of the holes; and on the first day we caught him. I took the cage to a wooded area away from my house and let him out. No more holes in my yard. I should have done this a long time ago. Thank You Do My Own Pest Control....

Sorry, but cannot rate as of today, but it sure would trap it if it went in. Haven't trapped the little pest yet. Think it is an armadillo and have heard they are real elusive. Will probably have to use a more drastic measure. It was delivered in a timely manner and will eventually get to use it.

For the past 2 years I have had a opossum going under my home. It wasn't until this year that she decided to nest, causing a nightmarish flea infestation. Within the first week, after setting the trap, it caught a roaming cat as well as the opossum.

QIs Havahart Cage Trap Model 1079 a one-door trap?
I would would like to know if this Model 1079 Havahart animal trap is a one-door model or two? How do you release the trap door to let the animal out, without getting your hands so near the trap? It seems like a hard release, unless it is a 2-door trap.

AThe Havahart Model 1079 is a one door trap. Below is a link to a gentlemen using the 1079 and catching and releasing animals. He does a great job of visually showing folks what to expect. Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAbMNccWR6M
