We would recommend Adonis 2F, which is a much more economical version of Merit.  You would use the soil drench method.  Apply .2 ounces per inch of trunk diameter.  Soil Drench: Apply uniformly as a drench around the base of the tree in not less than 10 gallons of water per 1000 square feet. Direct application to the root area. Remove plastic or any other barrier that will stop solution from reaching the root zone.
