How can I control earthworms in my yard?
South FL, castings along edge of driveway are obvious, very large areas of soft spots in lawn, when it rains very many worms end up in pool and patio. Would like to eliminate these likely pests. I read this great article: http://www.oxfordcroquet.com/care/worms/index.asp Some talk about thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim as a method. My lawn is healthy, yes, but the mess, softness and rain aftereffects is not appealing. Please help. Thanks
There are no products on the market in the USA that are labeled for earthworms as they are largely beneficial creatures. There are a few known control methods that include cutting back on irrigation so that the worms will go deeper into the soil for the moisture they require to survive or fertilizing your lawn after a heavy rainfall which will eliminate some of the population. We do carry a product called Cleary 3336F that contains the active ingredient thiophanate-methyl that you referenced in your question but it is a fungicide and has not been tested to kill earthworms. We do not carry any products that contain carbendazim the referenced active ingredient.
