Sarah from Evansville, Indiana writes

How do i get rid of an extremely heavy roach problem?

We moved into our home 5 months ago and this home was empty for 3 months prior. The land lord had an exterminator out every month that it was empty and for the first 3 months that we lived here. They bombed using 12 bombs, we bombed using 9 bombs and are constantly using raid and hot shot. There is no let up. We have tried everything. We keep our home clean and the dishes cleaned and dried always. We see most of them in the kitchen, even after wiping down the counters with HOT BLEACH water. Nothing is getting rid of these things. We have roach hotels everywhere. Like 8 of them in the kitchen and at least 4 in every room. I have identified them as being American and German roaches. I have been told that raid will not work because they will smell it and hide. They can hide in the walls for a month without eating and while in there, they are multiplying. I need something in concentrate that will surely kill these monsters and keep allowing us to spray so they do not come back. Please help. I have never seen an infestation this bad in my life.

Answer:

There are a few different things you will need to do to get rid of the roaches completely. First you will want to continue your non chemical steps of sanitizing, cleaning and keeping everything as dry and free from food and water as possible. Use a paper towel to wipe out any excess water sitting in the bottom of the kitchen sink when its not in use and the same for bathroom sinks and tubs. Take trash out regularly and if you have any pets, pick up food bowls and keep them in ziploc bags when not in use and pour out water bowls instead of letting them sit all day. Also, keep in mind that if the units around you are having/causing the problem it can make it harder for you to eliminat the population. The next step would be to stop using bombs. Bombs are not an effective way of eliminating roaches by any stretch, as they not only kill ONLY the roaches that are out in the open when it goes off (bombs do not get behind walls or baseboards) but often using large amounts of them can make the problem worse. You need products that you spray every couple of weeks or so that will stay on the surfaces you treated and continue to kill the roaches and transfer back to the colony. I would recommend going with one of 2 methods: Use our New York Roach Control Kit which comes with a concentrate residual spray, a concentrate IGR(birth control), and one of the best bait gels on the market to use in cabinets; OR use Phantom Insecticide, NyGuard IGR and the same gel as the kit Maxforce Magnum. The Phantom has a slow kill but an amazing transfer back through the colony to all the ones you don't see and is sprayed once every 30 days. The NyGuard is a longer lasting IGR and covers a wider range of other insects as well. You will want to look over our article on How To Get Rid of Roaches as it goes over in detail what steps to take. You will also want to watch the video on the page for the Maxforce Magnum as it shows you exactly where and how to place the bait in your home for best results.
