Product Overview

Hydretain RTS has Hydretain's root zone moisture management technology with a non ionic surfactant that is environmentally sound and a renewable resource that will improve soil penetration. This is designed to reduce watering by 50% for plants and turf. It is made of a new chemistry that is neither a superabsorbent polymer or a wetting agent. Hydretain attracts free water molecules from the air, acting like water magnets - this vapor is usually unable to be used by plants and goes back into the air. Hydretain uses this water vapor and turns it into a liquid form that transfers it to the plant roots. This product will help keep plants and turf alive and green. Hydretain saves water usage, lowers labor and cost and provides a greener outcome.

This quart bottle comes in a ready to spray bottle that attaches easily to a garden hose.

Features and Specs

Active Ingredient Humectant - 54% 10% Non-Ionic Surfactant
For use in Lawn and Garden, Golf and Sports Fields, Nursery and Greenhouses, Landscapes, Farming and Agriculture
Application Application: Break tab on Hose-end sprayer before turning knob to the on position.
Turf: General application rate - Through hose-end sprayer apply 9 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. once every 3 months or maintain monthly at 1/3 rate after initial full rate application. One quart treats up to 3,500 Sq. Ft. For best results apply to wet soil. Water in with at least 1/10 inch of water within the first hour to insure Hydretain ES Plus is washed off foliage and into the soil. Within 24 hours, follow with enough additional water to carry Hydretain down to and throughout the root zone. (The amount of additional water required to carry Hydretain throughout the root zone is dependant on the depth of the root zone of the treated area. Usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water is required.) Additional Hydretain may be required to correct difficult and extreme dry spot areas. Hydretain may be applied at up to 5 times the general application rate as a single treatment or in multiple applications.

Seeding, Sodding, Sprigging: Through hose-end sprayer apply Hydretain at general application rate of 9 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. after seeding, sodding or sprigging. Water in with only enough water to rinse Hydretain off foliage and into the soil at seed level or the root area of new sod or sprig. An application of Hydretain made prior to overseeding, and watered into the root zone will manage soil moisture for existing turf during new turf establishment.

Trees, Shrubs & Individual Plants: Through hose-end sprayer thoroughly saturate the root zone or dilute Hydretain at a rate of 2 oz. per gallon of water and apply by drench thoroughly saturating the root zone. For maximum effectiveness on trees apply 1 to 2 ounces of concentrate for each 1/4 inch of trunk diameter.
Potted or Containerized Plants: Through hose-end sprayer thoroughly saturate the root zone or dilute Hydretain at a rate of 2 oz. per gallon of water and apply by drench thoroughly saturating the root zone. Media should be dry enough to hold as much diluted Hydretain as possible.

Large Planters & Gardens: Through hose-end sprayer thoroughly saturate the root zone of individual plants or generally apply at a rate of 2 ounces of concentrate per 60 sq. ft of area. One quart treats up to 1,000 square feet.

For Best Results: Water thoroughly when re-watering Hydretain treated plants. Proper fertilization will enhance Hydretain's effectiveness. Hydretain is biodegradable. For maximum effectiveness reapply every three months or when required watering becomes more frequent. Reapply if a reduction in watering is not apparent within the first two weeks.
Caution: If Hydretain ES Plus is applied to open flowers blooms, rinse with water plain water

Q. How do You Apply Hydretain?

A. Hydretain is a concentrated liquid solution which must be diluted before applying. It may be applied by spray or drench. The Hydretain quart bottle has a ready to use hose-end proportioner applicator which dilutes as it sprays. Just attach a garden hose, break off the safety tab, turn the knob to the “on” position and begin applying. For maximum coverage, use broad spray strokes allowing for up to a 20' swath (10 feet in either direction). After applying, water in thoroughly.

Q.  Hydretain comes out of the bottle too fast. How can I get the desired coverage?

A. The hose-end applicator’s dilution and application rates are based on water pressure and volume. If your water pressure and volume are high you will have to move more quickly to achieve the desired coverage. If you cannot move quickly enough turn down the water volume at your hose bib.

Q.  Hydretain is not coming out of the hose-end sprayer, what should I do?

A. Make sure the knob is in the ON position. If it is in the ON then take bottle off of the hose-end applicator and make sure the plastic tube is attached. If not, reattach.

Q. When is the best time to apply Hydretain?

A. Hydretain can be applied anytime during a plant's life cycle.  However, the best time to apply Hydretain is before hot dry weather or drought stress conditions set in.

Q. Where can you use Hydretain?

A. Hydretain is effective on all types of ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and turf grass, as well as food producing agriculture. Hydretain is beneficial for containerized and field grown plants from seed germination or propagation to transplant establishment and throughout the growing life cycle.

Q. Will Hydretain hold too much water if we get heavy rain fall?

A. Hydretain has little moisture holding capacity. Its function is soil moisture management and functions by converting otherwise unavailable soil humidity available to plant roots.

Q. Will Hydretain wash through the soil if we get heavy rainfall?

A. Hydretain may wash through the soil if heavy rainfall follows closely after application before Hydretain has time to attach to plant roots.  Hydretain is usually drawn up against roots within the first one to 2 required waterings after application.

Q. Why does Hydretain need to be watered in right after application?

A. Hydretain needs to be watered in right after application so that it is driven down to and throughout the root zone where it can be drawn up against tiny roots. If allowed to remain on the surface or within the thatch area Hydretain will attach to organic materials i.e. plant tissue or thatch, and its migration into the root area, with subsequent waterings, will be too slow to show it full effectiveness.

Q. Is Hydretain a replacement for fertilizer?

A. No. Hydretain is not a plant food ingredient and is not a replacement for fertilizer. However, Hydretain’s soil moisture management function has shown to improve nutrient uptake thereby amplifying fertilizer applications.

    Really good product!

    By Sam on 02/17/2014

    Verified Purchase

I really love this product. It works really well. It keeps your lawn really heathly. I think you can either apply during rain or shortly before it rains, because it's very enviornmentally friendly. I would definitely recommended this product. It's really worth it!

Not worth the $ as a soil surfactant, unsure as humectant

    By Adam on 08/30/2015

I tried this on some heavier clay soil. For the day or two after application, it did make a big difference in water absorption into the soil. By two weeks after application, water was once again flowing on top of the soil rather than being absorbed. As for humectant effects, we've had rain regularly over the last month, so impossible to tell any difference. May test during peak summer stress next year, but at $30 for one application to my whole yard, it is a big "maybe."

    Saved New Hilly Lawn

    By Gwendolyn on 05/29/2020

After dethatching and reseeding my new lawn was coming in nicely. I had top dressed the flats to protect the bare areas around the individual blades of new grass but on slopes there was no protection. An early heatwave was expected so I got this to keep from having to wet area 10 times a day to prevent drying out of new grass and it was better than I thought....I will finally have grass on my slopes this summer!

    Great product

    By D on 07/14/2020

During hot days my potted plants don't need watered every day. The soil holds moisture longer. I recommend it!

    Great product

    By D on 07/19/2020

Every summer I'd water my hanging plants until the water spilled out the bottom thinking they were going and soaked. This product real helps by priming the soil to retain water and stops the water from running down the sides of your pots.

Q
Does the type of soil make a difference when using Hydretain ES Plus?

I have soil that is clay. It has been a challenge to have a good lawn. And as I am working off a well, having to water less would be a benefit.

A
Per the manufacturer, Hydretain ES Plus works best in sandy and less compacted soil but will also work well in clay type soils such as Georgia Red Clay and Black Gumbo Clay. You will need to airfy the clay soil if it is heavily compacted first to improve penetration and drive the product down into the soil.
