8000 sq ft yard, when will it be safe for my 2 small dogs to go back on the lawn after I treat it?

    Q
What happens if you apply Merit more than once a year?
i keep seeing that you should only apply it once a year. But what does it do if it is applied twice? I can't find any information on repercussions. does it harm the soil or the grass?
    A
You are able to apply Merit more than once a year but you cannot apply more than 80lbs of Merit per acre per year. While it will not harm the soil or the grass the EPA does limit how much product you are able to use in a given area per year.

    Q
What should I use for grubs on my lawn?
Merit granular, Bayer or your suggestion? I am ready to attack!
    A
Merit Granule is actually manufactured by Bayer and is always our top recommendation for grub control. For best results, make application prior to egg hatch. To find out when grub egg hatch normally occurs in your area you should contact your local cooperative extension office.

    Q
When you apply the Merit granules, does the chemical stay in the soil and protect grass planted later on?
when you apply the Merit granules for example in late June, does the chemical stay in the soil such that if you plant grass seed a couple months later in Sept, will the new grass have the systemic protection as well? or would the new grass be unprotected?
    A
The Merit that is applied will be in the soil for some time but it is trans-located through the plants that are in currently in place. Newly planted grass should be retreated.

  • Asked by Ryan from Otsego, Mn

    Q
Can Merit Insecticide Granules be applied any time of the year?
I live in Minnesota. Is it okay to apply a grub killer and other insect killer to my lawn at the current time? I am trying to prevent and potentially kill anything in my yard. It is now July 9th is it out to apply at this time?
    A

Merit Insecticide Granules can be applied at any time, but if you are looking to control white grubs then you want to apply it several weeks before egg match of the target pest. Usually this application needs to be made in late Spring, usually sometime between May and late June. We recommend contacting your local Cooperative Extension for the best recommendation on application timing for your target pest in your area.

    Q
The Merit 0.5 label doesn't list settings for Scotts Edgeguard spreader. What setting should I use for 60lbs/A
I'm using a Scott's ProEdgeguard broadcast spreader (setting dial 2-15). Product is Merit 0.5 granules.
    A

We do not know the setting for that spreader and we are not sure exactly what to set it on.  However, almost all fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc have treatments in amounts of so much product per 1000 square feet.  So if you can figure out what your walking speed is then you know anytime you apply any product that calls for so much of it per 1000 square feet, you always set your spreader on this setting.  You can calibrate this by marking off a 1000 square foot (10 x 100) area and placing 1.4 pounds of any type of product of similar granule size, or of the merit itself in the spreader.  Start with a low setting and start walking your marked off area at a normal pace.  You can adjust as you go and find the basic setting for you to apply the product over a 1000 square feet. The 60 pounds per acre equates to 1.4 pounds per 1000 square feet.  Or, you can call Bayer, the manufacturer, and they may be able to tell you what setting you should have it on.  You can reach them at (800) 331-2867.

  • Asked by John from Corpus Christi

    Q
Is Merit Granules diluted by regular irrigation?
Many of my customers have sprinkle systems. Does weekly irrigation (or more often) dilute the product, or does the merit remain even after multiple irrigations?
    A
Regular sprinker irrgation can be used to water in the Merit granules as long the sprinklers run within 24 hours of the application and they run long enough to water the product in 1/4"-1/2" as recommended by the Merit product label.

  • Asked by Debra from Wamego

    Q
Are Merit Granules safe to use on a lawn where we have wildlife such as birds and rabbits?
is Merit Granules safe to use on a lawn where we have wild life, like many varieties of birds, also rabbits. We also have cats. I will not use any product that threatens to kill or cause wildlife or any animals to suffer in any way. Our grub situation appears to be quite serious suddenly. We are in KS, it has been warm & I think they are hatching or whatever they do. We have about 2 acres. Thank you.
    A
As long as you follow the product label and keep all animals off of the area during the treatment and for a couple of hours following the treatment you should not have any issues at all. Do you know what kind of grubs you are dealing with? If you are dealing with Japanese Beetle Grubs you could also use St Gabriels Milky Spore which is non-toxic to animals and people at all stages. You can check with your local cooperative extension office to see what kind of beetle grubs you are dealing with if you are not sure.

  • Asked by Tom from Frenchtown, Nj

    Q
Can Merit Granules be used as a systemic treatment for trees?
Bayer sells a product, "12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed" which contains 1.1% Imidacloprid plus some fertilizer. Can I substitute Merit granules or ImiGold for the same systemic tree treatment if I adjust the dose to account for the lower percentage of Imidacloprid?
    A
Merit Granules and Imigold Granules can be used for trees but is only labeled to treat white grubs when used for tree applications. Merit 75 WSP or the less expensive Adonis 2F is most often chosen to use for systemic root drenches on trees and shrubs.

  • Asked by Steven from Boynton Beach Fl.
    01/30/2013
    Q
Will merit be a good defense against white fly and how long will an application last on ficus hedges?
    A
Merit WSP and Merit WP are good choices for white fly on ficus. You can expect an application to last 3-6 months but depending on the size of the ficus it may take 1-2 months to see the begininng result as the product must translocate through the ficus. While you are waiting for it to work you can do foliage sprays with Talstar P for immediate results.  Merit Granules (the product you referenced in your question) is not labeled to deal with whitefly on ficus because its usage rate is much different.
