MotherEarth D - Diatomaceous Earth

MotherEarth D is a broad spectrum desiccant dust with 100% high purity freshwater diatomaceous earth for long lasting control of crawling insects. Diatoms are harmless against humans and pets and are completely natural. MotherEarth D is made of the highest-quality diatomaceous earth, lasts virtually forever if left untouched and provides long-lasting control of insect pests.

Mother Earth D should not be the only product used in the fight against bed bugs as it does not kill quick enough.  For best results, use a contact kill such as Sterifab or Bedlam in addition to the dust product.

MotherEarth D consists of 100% diatomaceous earth which is the fossilized skeletal remains of single celled phytoplankton commonly referred to as diatoms. It works by dehydrating insects through a desiccating action. The absorptive properties of the fossilized cell-walls easily remove the cuticle's outer waxy layer. This results in the loss of an insect's ability to maintain proper fluid levels-ultimately leading to death. Unlike boric acid dusts that work best when ingested, MotherEarth D only requires contact with the insect to be effective.

Mother Earth D Features:

  • Highly absorptive desiccant dust
  • 100% high purity freshwater diatomaceous earth
  • Long lasting dust provides continuous protection from pests
  • Easily covers cracks, crevices, and voids
  • Mined straight from Mother Earth for your sensitive accounts

How do I use Mother D?

INDOOR USE

ANTS, COCKROACHES, EARWIGS, SPIDERS AND OTHER CRAWLING INSECTS: Using a hand duster, apply lightly in dry areas where crawling insect pests are found or may hide, including cracks and crevices, along baseboards, around sinks, cabinets, refrigerators and stoves and in attics and basements. Direct contact with dry dust is required for effective control.

FLEAS: To control fleas infesting pet areas, thoroughly treat floor and bedding in and around pet's sleeping quarters. Treat surrounding cracks and crevices, baseboards, furniture, carpeting and wherever fleas are suspected. Apply a thin coat of dust to rugs and carpets. Rake (not sweep) nap back and forth, causing dust to enter rug or carpet. Let product sit overnight. Repeat application as necessary and vacuum every 3 - 4 days for

effective flea control. MotherEarth D will kill fleas and help deodorize carpet or rug.

OUTDOOR USE

ANTS, EARWIGS, MITES, SPIDERS AND OTHER CRAWLING INSECTS: Using a hand duster or other equipment suitable for application of dusts, dust lightly in areas where insects are found such as windowsills and doorframes, around foundations and along ant trails. Direct contact with dry dust is required for effective control. Repeat treatment in problem areas as necessary for control.

Mother Earth D Features:

  • Highly absorptive desiccant dust
  • 100% high purity freshwater diatomaceous earth
  • Long lasting dust provides continuous protection from pests
  • Easily covers cracks, crevices, and voids
  • Mined straight from Mother Earth for your sensitive accounts

    By Sharon on 09/28/2008

This stuff is the best! I have spent so much money, like 300 dollars on stuff to get rid of fleas and nothing worked. I was ready to loose it until I received a free sample of MotherEarth D. I honestly didn't think it was gonna work because nothing else did, but it did! I puff it everywhere in my house, and guess what, I have no fleas! I don't know what to say except, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Kills all the bugs. Warning it is a very fine dust powder. You should wear a mask but it does the job. I guarantee it, the bugs cannot become immune and die on contact. I made a perimeter around my bed and I am safe and clean no more bed bugs!!

5 of 5 stars  No More Spiders!
By Sandy in Connecticut on 11/01/2010

I ordered this product to rid my home of spiders. It worked! After chasing down, and eliminating, a HUGE Wolf Spider in my garage (wow are they super fast), I declared all out war against spiders in my home. I didn't mind little spiders, but when I saw the Wolf Spider, (I initially thought it was a small mouse running across my garage floor...then it stopped...I think my jaw dropped open when I saw it was a spider...it was HUGE!)....that spider was way too big for my comfort to have around. I liked that Diatomaceous Earth works without harmful and dangerous pesticides. I sprinkled it around the foundation of my home, and where my garage door hits the cement floor when lowered, and Ta-Da!, no more spiders. Delivery of the product was quick, ordering was easy, packaging was secure...I would buy it again.

By Dan in Gulfport, MS on 09/08/2010

I had bought a 5 lb bag of this stuff before finding your sight, when first finding out that we had bed bugs in the house in Mississippi, and been using it. It works great. A little slower in getting rid of things, but it works. I have seen dead roaches and spiders, too, from them walking through it, and not a roach in a few months now. I love it. I suggest it to anyone with a roach problem or bed bugs, too.

By Pam in MINNEAPOLIS, MN on 07/10/2010

I have been at war with squash bugs for several years. Until now, I have ended up with dead and dying squash and cucumber plants and no yield. I tried adding a bit of Diatomaceous Earth around the root area of my plants and it worked great. I am very pleased!

5 of 5 stars  works for bed bugs
By Joe in robinson on 05/21/2012

I got the 10 lb bucket to treat my three bedroom house. I had a light infestation, because I knew about BB's before I got them and was able to catch it early. I did what everybody said not to do and coated my house with the stuff. The reason I did this was I got desperate after the first treatment with an exterminator failed miserably. The only bad thing about DE is it can take 14 days to kill after contact. Then you have to wait for all the eggs to hatch and they have to make contact with the DE after they hatch its miserable waiting, but it works. I would recommend pesticides before DE to get the population down study there habits and remember they have to touch it to die so apply to hot spots every couple of days and to the whole house once or twice. I am know free of this nightmare after 1 month of application this is my personal story. I gave it a five because honestly I think the pesticides would not be 100% effective alone so the DE kills the ones immune to them.

I work for a management company and we were having so many problems getting rid of bedbugs, (even the exterminator could not get rid of them). Then I found this product and figured what the heck, it couldn't hurt. We have been able to get rid of the bedbugs using this product. It takes about 10 days and 2 treatments, but it works.

I know this helped but I'm giving it three stars because it was so hard to put around the house and leave up. I still have white smears everywhere in the corners of my apartment. It has definitely helped get rid of both. But I have sensitive skin and I'm somewhat allergic.

By Shane in Virginia on 01/29/2011

I bought too much of this product and returned one of the containers. A little goes a long way. Be sure to wear a mask and air the room out after treatment. It was a little hard to breathe after I dusted one room, but maybe I used a little too much. The DE seems like a good product for inserting in cracks and in electric sockets. The small, 4 oz duster was all I needed. From some online reading of DE, I read that long-term exposure to this product is not good for the lungs.

First time I have used this item. I have 5 cats and we always battle with the fleas every year!! We live on a farm and I have tried using other products and they rarely work well enough and too expensive! Mother Earth D has worked very well I used it on their bedding, fur and around the house. Easier and safer than the other smelly unsafe products that I have used. Thank you for coming to the rescue!!

I can't remark on this one way or the other. I don't have bedbugs..............yet, but I know people who have had them and this is what they suggested I get to protect myself. My plan is to put DE in containers and place my bed legs in the containers. This is a preemptive strike. I'm going to rate it five stars because of what people have told me--it lacerates the bodies of the bugs. Caveat: be careful with this product. Don't inhale it or get in it in your eyes.

QI have little red ants in my pantry. Can I use MotherEarth D around food? Any other suggestions if not?

AYou should not use MotherEarth D or any other dust around food in a pantry.  Dusts are meant to be placed in cracks and crevices, underneath appliances and inside wall voids.  Ant bait is a great choice for treating ants in a pantry or other area in your kitchen. Our Maxforce FC Ant gel is our most popular.  You should first throw away any open food that the ants are eating and take away all easily accessible food so there is not any competition.  The ants will eat the ant bait and take it back to their nest and feed it to the other ants and the queen. This method will eliminate the entire colony.

QIs MotherEarth D safe to use around children and pets?
Does it hurt pets or humans if they come into contact with the MotherEarth D? How much dust is needed to do the job efficiently?

AMother Earth D is an all natural product so there is no poison or insecticide present.  It is one of the safest products we sell.  There is no certain amount because this product is meant to be applied from a hand duster in cracks and cravices, under appliances, wall voids, etc.  You should fill a hand duster half way with the MotherEarth D and apply 1 to 2 puffs in the crack/crevice or under appliances or any other areas you apply the product.

QIs MotherEarth D effective against bird mites?
It appears on the bird mite section of your website and the label includes mites, so I hope it does! Also, what other products would you suggest using? Onslaught? Bedlam aerosol spray?

A

We do not have any products that are directly labeled for birdmites but MotherEarth users have reported back with positive results. Here is the general treatments most folks try if they find they have bird mites in their homes:

For treatment in the home we recommend you frequently vacuum all carpet and upholstery and dispose of the bag or vacuum contents in a sealed bag outdoors. Spray Sterifab on couches, chairs and other upholstered furniture where you may spend time resting. Use MotherEarth Dust in all cracks and crevices around the perimeter of the room. Apply a thin coat of MotherEarth dust to rugs and carpets. Rake (not sweep) nap back and forth, causing dust to enter rug or carpet. Let product sit overnight. Repeat application as necessary and vacuum every 3 - 4 days for effective control. MotherEarth dust does not have a fast knockdown, it can take several days for insects to die after they contact the dust. Onslaught can be used for a faster knockdown. Thoroughly apply as a fine particle broadcast spray using a hand pump sprayer to infested rugs and carpets and other cracks and crevices around the perimeter of each room. Put all clothes through the dryer on high heat to help kill mites and their eggs. We have had many customers use the above recommendations with great success. Most customers report that it can take several months to get rid of all of the mites. Finding and removing the source of the infestation is very important and is the key to getting rid of the mites for good.

Qi have a lot of bedbugs in my room. Can i use d mother earth to spray around my floor?
If cant apply on my floor what product would you recomend me? How would i apply the mother earth?

AMotherEarth D is labeled to be used on as a thin coat on carpeting. For the most effective treatment for Bed bugs we recommend using one of our Bed Bug Kits. Please take a few moments to read over our Bedbug Guide to get a general idea of what needs to be done. We also recommend that you encase all of your mattresses and boxsprings with Protecta Bed Encasements as mattresses and boxsprings can be very difficult to impossible to treat because of all of the seams, folds, cracks and crevices.

QCan you use MotherEarth D - Diatomaceous Earth on flying squirrels?
I have 6 baby flying squirrels ( between 5 and 7 weeks old) and they have fleas really bad. Can I use this product on them for flea control?

AMotherEarth D is not labeled for use on animals. We are reluctant to make any type of topical flea control recommendations for exotic animals because so many of these animals are sensitive to chemicals. We recommend you contact your veterinarian and ask for his/her advice on flea control.

QIf Mother Earth D gets wet, will it retain its properties after it dries out?
In other words, if it is applied into a baseboard void and that area gets wet but then dries out, does the Mother Earth D then return to its original powder form and retain its properties of breaking down the bugs cuticle composition? If left undisturbed, how long will Mother Earth D last? Also, is there an aerosol version of Mother Earth?

AYes, once Mother Earth dust dries it will be effective again. When left undisturbed, Mother Earth  will last indefinitely. At this time, there is not an aerosol version of Mother Earth on the market.

QHow often should we reapply Mother Earth D pest control dust?
It's been working fine. We were planning on reapplying it annually. Would that be sufficient?

AMotherEarth Dust actually stays effective for as long as it is in place and dry. Reapplying the dust annually is a good plan because the dust could become covered with other dust or dirt or be displaced.

QIs there an effective way to apply MotherEarth D without a duster or other applicator?

AWhile you could try to apply the dust products by hand (wearing gloves of course), this would be the most wasteful and inefficient way to do so. You would have no way to get the dust into cracks, crevices or voids. You would also use way too much dust at one time, leaving small mounds and thick layers behind. When applied correctly using a hand duster, MotherEarth D is only applied in a very fine, thin layer. Almost every customer that has opted not to purchase a duster, ends up calling us back to make the purchase after they try to apply the dust without one.

ATypically an 8oz bottle of MotherEarth Dust will treat an average sized home (about 2000 sq ft). MotherEarth Dust should be applied using a duster directly into cracks, crevices and wall voids.

QIs MotherEarth D safe around pets, toddlers and infants?
Are there any other dusts that are more safe or effective against ants, spiders and other household crawling insects?

AWhen used as directed MotherEarth D is one of the safest dusts to use in the home. MotherEarth D is actually made up of crushed freshwater diatoms and it works by dehydrating insects through a desiccating action. MotherEarth D does not contain any chemical insecticides. We also carry Essentria Dust, a natural botanical oil dust that is very effective. The Essentria Dust is a versatile, minimum risk product that is exempt from Federal registration because it is made from natural botanical oils like rosemary, wintergreen and eugenol. Both dusts are safer to use in homes and both are very effective for crawling insects. The main differences would be that MotherEarth D lasts for as long as it is dry and in place, and Essentria Dust lasts for about 6 months but will also work even if it is damp.
