Outdoor Flea and Tick Kit

The Outdoor Flea and Tick Kit contains professional products to help prevent and treat infestations of fleas and ticks outdoors. Temprid SC is a versatile insecticide concentrate with two active ingredients, providing both a quick initial kill and long-term residual control of adult fleas and ticks. Archer Insect Growth Regulator prohibits the development of immature stages of fleas and ticks, effectively interrupting the breeding cycle of target insects. These concentrates can be diluted and applied together to save time and energy.

As with all pest control, we advocate an Integrated Pest Management approach to your treatment. You should always incorporate thorough inspection and non-chemical methods of control such as eliminating harborage areas for successful flea treatment and tick treatment.

Both Temprid SC and Archer IGR are concentrates that need to be diluted with water and applied with a pump sprayer, such as a hand pump sprayer or backpack sprayer.

For residents of NY or CT, see our New York Outdoor Flea and Tick Kit.

The products in the Outdoor Flea and Tick Kit are effective for treating both fleas and ticks, however your applications will vary slightly depending on which pest you need to control. Regardless of which pest you are treating, it is usually best to start treatment by treating your pets with products designed for this purpose. A topical treatment such as ZoGuard Plus for Dogs and ZoGuard Plus for Cats offers monthly control of both fleas and ticks. You can view more information about which products are best for your dogs and cats on our Flea Treatment and Tick Treatment Guides.

How to Apply the Outdoor Flea and Tick Kit

STEP 1 - NON-CHEMICAL CONTROL - Harborage Elimination, Removing Debris

Before you apply any insecticides, it is important to Inspect the treatment area to identify which pests are present and where you need to target your treatments. These areas may vary depending on whether you are treating for fleas or for ticks.

Wearing white socks with shoes while walking around moist, shady areas will help to find fleas. To locate ticks, drag a white towel attached to a dowel or rod across the suspected areas to pick up insects.

*For both fleas and ticks, start with areas where pets and where wild animals may frequent, particularly shady areas where they like to find rest.

*Remove yard debris such as leaves and grass clippings so that your application will reach the ground instead of just the things on top of it.

*Be sure to check under porches or decks, around outbuildings like sheds, and along fence lines.

*Mowing and trimming overgrown shrubs or trees will help to eliminate areas where fleas and ticks like to breed.

*Avoid over-watering lawns: fleas will thrive in moist areas.

STEP 2 - SPRAY - Temprid SC and Archer IGR

Both the Temprid SC and the Archer IGR are water-based concentrates that you should dilute with water only. Wear gloves when mixing and handling pesticides, such as Nitrile Chemical Resistant Gloves.

*To mix the Temprid SC, shake the container well before diluting. You will use 8-16 mL of Temprid SC per gallon of water, or per 1,000 sq. ft. if a higher volume of water is needed for adequate coverage.

*Use the lower rate for prevention or for low-level infestations. Use the higher rate for heavy infestations.

*Fill sprayer tank 1/3 - 1/2 with clean, temperate water.

*Add desired amount of Temprid SC, then close lid and agitate the sprayer to begin mixing.

*Add the desired amount of Archer IGR to the tank. Use 1 oz. of Archer IGR concentrate per gallon of water or per 1,500 square feet of area.

*To measure the Archer IGR, first shake the bottle well. Then squeeze the bottle to fill the small reservoir with the desire amount of concentrate. Unscrew only the cap on the small reservoir side to pour out the pre-measured concentrate.

*Shake, agitate, or stir tank mixture again, then add the remaining volume of water. Agitate tank mixture again before application, or if spraying is interrupted.

*For tick treatments, treat the entire outdoor lawn and ornamentals where ticks have been found. For ornamental plants, try to treat the entire plants, including the undersides of the leaves. You may want to use a higher volume of water to get more thorough coverage.

*Also treat around rock or brick retaining walls, along pathways, on and around piles of yard debris or other dense foliage, and anywhere pets or wild animals may spend time.

*For flea treatments, concentrate your spraying on areas where animals spend the most time and where dense vegetation is found, such as under decks, in shady areas such as under trees, and where yard debris may build up.

*Fleas cannot develop on hard surfaces such as driveways or in open, sunny areas, so you do not need to treat these areas for fleas.

*You may also apply the Temprid/Archer solution as a perimeter treatment around the foundation of the structure, creating a band 2-3 feet up onto the structure and 2-3 feet out onto the surrounding yard.

*Keep pets and children out of the treatment area until the application has dried, usually about an hour.

*Try to mix only enough solution to use at the time of application. Diluted concentrates will break down and may damage spray equipment. Always rinse spray equipment and allow to dry thoroughly after use.

*Store concentrates in temperate areas out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets.

STEP 3 - REPEAT!

*Most of your tick control will come from the initial application, but it may take several treatments to fully eradicate a tick or flea population.

*For heavy infestations of ticks and for all flea applications, repeat STEP 2 after 14 days to catch new adults that have emerged or insects that animals have carried into the treatment area.

*For most tick treatments and for prevention, reapply Temprid SC and Archer IGR at 30 day intervals.

*Consider mowing 24 hours after applying sprays to stimulate flea pupae so they will be exposed to the pesticides.

*Both Temprid SC and Archer IGR will aid in the prevention and control of many common pests, such as ants and cockroaches. See the Temprid SC label and Archer IGR label for complete additional instructions.

5 of 5 stars  Great insect control in a safe, usable package.
By Britthaven in Florida on 07/05/2016

Good stuff at a reasonable price that is safe to do. It cleared my yard from a sudden infestation with fleas verging on the unbelievable. It was safe in a reasonable time to let me run my dogs again. The pump you recommend is a good piece of equipment at a good price.

5 of 5 stars  Very Effective
By Azvel in Bay Area on 08/08/2016

These 2 chemicals combined... Is very effective in stopping flea infestation. Local stores pesticides DO NOT WORK (I tried different combination of pesticides for a whole week - did not work!). I was about to hire an exterminator, but I realized I probably can do it myself, and give it one last shot. I mixed the highest dose of these bad boys, placed the solution in a watering can, and amazingly, in a few days I checked back, the pests are gone. So I bought the KIT, and my mistake is I should have bought the individual bottles instead of these vials, because it is not enough (the infestation was in my backyard). So after realizing it didn't cover all area, I bought bottles of the pesticide and IGR. The combination was indeed very effective. I highly recommend this product!

QIs this product safe around animals?
I'm concerned about the chemicals in this product poisoning my dogs.

AThis kit is pet safe as long as you follow the product label directions. Keep pets out of the area while you are spraying and until the treatment is dry, usually about an hour. You also want to make sure you store products out of reach of pets and children.

QWill the Temprid SC in this kit kill other insects or change the backyard ecology?
We all know there must be a balance of living organisms in our yards. Will this sanitize all insects that get exposed or is it selective? I would rather not destroy the whole ecosystem in my yard.

A

Insecticides such as Temprid SC are not selective so they can kill just about any insect that contacts a treated surface. †You should direct any application of pesticides to the stems and leaves of the plant and try not to get any on the actual flowering part where the bees or other beneficial insects pollinate.

QWill the Outdoor Flea and Tick treat other spiders, and, and fleas?
I have spiders, ants, and fleas. I need something to spray outside that is safe for my dog and cat, who both eat the grass.

A

You may want to consider our Outdoor Flea and Tick Kit. †The kit contains a liquid insecticide called†Temprid SC and an insect growth regulator called Archer, which can be used for ants, spiders, and other pests in addition to fleas. †All of the products in the kit are safe for pets if used as directed. †If you are not already doing so, it would be a good idea to treat the dog and cat†with pet flea control products as well. †
