    Q
Can Altriset be safely used inside a crawl space? It is represented as an exterior product.
I am working with a friend. We have an active infestation of eastern subterranean termites. The crawl is very low but mostly accessible, and includes two large stumps that were not removed prior to construction. The floor of the crawl is sand over clay. Wood damage is evident in the hot spot in the house above. I'd like to apply the Altriset inside the crawl space, specifically treating all joists and the stumps as well as the sandy '"floor" of the crawl. I do realize from its video that Altriset can be applied in a trench around the building after dilution. Is it safe for interior use or crawlspace use?
    A
Altriset as well as all other termite products are intended for use around the outside of the home as well as underneath the home.  When a termiticide says that not for use inside the home, it means you cannot spray it inside around baseboards, window sills, and other places like you would a pest control spray.  Termiticides are not pest control sprays.  The crawl space under the house is not considered the inside actually because it is not the living space, so they intended for use under the house.

    Q
Can a homeowner plant a garden in soil that was treated with Altriset?
    A
You should not plant a garden that will contain edible vegetation in the same soil that was treated with Altriset. Altriset persists in soil for at least 5 years and it is not labeled to be used in places where edible plants will be grown. If you really do want to plant a vegetable garden in an area that was treated with Altriset you will need to remove all of the soil and replace it with untreated soil. You should note though that if the soil is removed and it is in the termite treatment barrier zone you will be left with a hole in your termite barrier. If you just want to plant a flower garden you should not run into any issues.

    Q
Fruit trees, how close can they be to the Altriset trenchline?
Is it safe to eat the fruit, my orange tree is 7 feet from the outside house perimeter, my lime tree is only 27 inches, and my apricot is 9 feet.
    A
Usually as long as the area treated with Altriset is at least 10-15 ft from the edible plants that is sufficient to make sure the roots are not going into the treated zone.
We would suggest not applying Altriset along the side of the house that is within 10 feet of the trees.  You should keep a close eye on this area of the house for termites, or you can of course always install some termite bait stations in that area for monitoring activity.

    Q
Will Altriset harm pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies?
I have butterfly shrubbery around my house and am wondering if bees, butterflies, hummingbirds will be affected from Altriset being used where the shrubs are planted.
    A
Altriset Termiticide is labeled to be used in the ground for termite treatments. If bees and/or butterflies come in contact with the treated soil, it has the potential to harm them. Hummingbirds are not generally around the dirt in areas where the product would be.

    Q
Can Altriset be used in termite mounds?
    A
We are not sure what you mean by termite mounds, but Altriset is a great termiticide and if you get the product where the termites are and it touches them, then they will pass it around and it will kill them.  Please read the product label for full treatment instructions.

    Q
Can you do a perimeter (plus style) treatment with Altriset like you can with Termidor SC?
EPLI... no trenching the inside wall in a crawl space.
    A
At this time, the Altriset label does not permit to do a Termidor SC type treatment. We would have to recommend treating the entire structure as instructed on the Altriset label.  We can only recommend what is permitted on the label.

    Q
What is the distance allowed to plant vegetables from the area of treatment with Altriset?
there are 2 houses in one lot. If the back house is treated with altriset what is the distance that is safe to plant edible vegetables?
    A
The edible plants root system needs to be out of the treated area. Usually as long as the area treated with Altriset is at least 10-15 ft from the edible plants that is sufficient to make sure the roots are not going into the treated zone.

    Q
Will Altriset work on leafcutter ants? What is the best product for these types of ants? Would Termidor work?
    A
Altriset is not labeled for use on ants. Termidor SC will work for most species of ants but it is not specifically labeled for leaf cutter ants. We believe the reason leaf cutter ants were not included on the label is because most people do not have leaf cutter ants on their homes or trying to gain access to their homes and Termidor is only allowed to be used on or immediately around a structure. Leaf cutter ants can be a difficult pest to get rid of. The colonies are large and the ants make their own food so poison baits only have limited effects on this species of ants. According to several university websites Maxforce Complete Granules containing hydramethlynon are some what effective, though they will usually eliminate only about 30% of a large colony in one treatment and will need to be reapplied several times.  DeltaGard Granules is one of the only products actually labeled for leaf cutter ants. The product label recommends treating the mound directly and lightly watering the granules in. Again, it may take several treatments to get the desired results. We also recommend contacting your local cooperative extension office to see if they have any recommendations for products that have worked for other people in your region.  We have had several positive results from customers that used Termidor around the outside of their home for leaf cutter ants

    Q
Will the sense clay soil around my house impact the absorption/dispersal of Altriset?
    A
We have dense clay here in Georgia also and termite treatments are not an issue.  It may take longer for the solution to absorb into the soil, but it should absorb none the less.  It definitely helps to wait until the soil is rather dry, to soak up the solution easier, rather than treat if the soil is a little saturated from a previous rain event.

    Q
In front of Garage drilling for termites?
I have a 3 houses in my neighborhood that have same house with termite. The pro came and did not drill in front of garage or inside. Should not drill too?
    A
Yes, we always recommend performing a complete barrier treatment around the structure. That includes the 6inx6in trench where you can dig, as well as drilling along the inside of garage by the foundation. Directions for drilling are to use a 18in long drill bit that is 1/2in or 3/8in wide and drilling holes 12in apart.

  • Asked by Janel from Iowa City Iowa

    Q
What other insects does Altriset kill? I'm trying to decide between Altriset and Termidor SC.
I have termites and other wood destroying insects. I'd like to protect bees by using the Altriset but I need to kill destructive insects.
    A
Altriset Termiticide is labeled to only eradicate subterranean termites. Termidor SC is labeled for subterranean termites also as well as other listed crawling insects. Bora-Care will help treat wood destroying insects on raw wood but should NOT be applied in the soil for subterranean termites.

  • Asked by Paul from Lancaster, Pa.
    10/06/2013
    Q
Can I spray Altriset Termiticide on and around the pallets to prevent termite infestation?
I have firewood laying on wood pallets in my yard by my garage. The pallets are sitting atop bricks.
    A

We apologize but we would not recommend that you spray the firewood with any insecticide. The manufacturers do not recommend this. Any insecticide should not be breathed in, and when burned these toxins can become airborne. It would be suggested to not burn the wood that you treat with anything.  Altriset is only labeled to be applied adjacent to structures but you could spray Dominion 2L around the firewood only on the ground but be careful to not apply to the firewood.
