What product do you recommend I use to control mosquitos and black fly? I live in the woods in Michigan.
What product do you recommend I use to control mosquitos and black fly. I live in the woods in Michigan. I use a Stihl SR420 Backpack Blower/Sprayer.
    A

For long lasting control of mosquitoes we recommend treating with Talstar P using a hand pump sprayer. Spray the underside of leaves of trees and bushes around your property and also treat door frames, window frames, and screens to stop the insects from coming indoors. Treat early morning or in the evening when the mosquitoes are most active for the best control. Riptide would only work well for quick control of flying insects but it does not offer a long lasting residual.

    Q
Will pyrethrin kill bedbugs? What would you suggest?
    A
Pyrethrin products only kill bedbugs if you are able to spray the bug directly, and they have no residual control. There is no one product that is appropriate for every area in your home. We have put together Bedbug Kits that feature all of the different products that are required to eliminate bedbugs. Please take a few minutes to look through our bedbug kit page to find a kit that is the right size for your needs. We also recommend using mattress and box spring encasements to help eliminate a current infestation and make future bedbug inspection easier.

    Q
Can I mix Riptide and Talstar in my sprayer?
    A

Using Riptide with the Talstar P will give you a fast knockdown and then the 30 day residual.  Spray Talstar P and Riptide on trees, shrubs and bushes paying special attention to the underside of the leaves. You can also spray your lawn to help control the low flying gnats that tend to land there. Talstar P will give a long lasting residual while the Riptide will give you a fast knockdown. You can use both products in the same area to get both a fast knock down and a long lasting residual. It is best to treat in the early morning or the late evening when these pests are most active.

    Q
Are you able to use Riptide in a hand pump container and at what ratio?
    A
Riptide is really meant to be used in fogging applications, but it can be used in a hand pump sprayer for some uses. You did not mention what you are spraying for or where you will be spraying, so we cannot tell you the proper usage rate you will need to use. You may be able to find the information you are seeking on the Riptide Product Label or you can respond to this email with the needed information. We also carry Pyganic Pro which is a 5% pyrethrin product that is actually formulated and labeled to be used in a hand pump sprayer and may be more what you are looking for.

    Q
Is Riptide 5.0% Pyrethrin ULV EPA approved to spray around boat marinas?
We have a pest control company spray once a month and only kill spiders. We need something to kill mosquitoes and flying insects.
    A
No. Riptide cannot be used around boat marinas. Riptide contains pyrethrins which is toxic to aquatic animals and cannot be used around the water. There is only one product on the market that can be used around bodies of water and that is Eco Exempt MC. Many boat marinas have started using this product in misting systems to keep the mosquitoes and gnats away. Please read through the Eco Exempt MC product label and supplemental label to see if this product will fit your needs.

    Q
Can I use Riptide 5.0% Pyrethrin ULV for fly control on cattle with a portable sprayer ?
The product is marketed for misting systems. I would like to try it in the field with a sprayer. Will that work ?
    A
According to the Riptide label you can use just a pump sprayer to treat cattle "To protect beef and dairy cattle and horses from Horn Flies, House Flies, Mosquitoes and Gnats, dilute 1 part concentrate with 49 parts water, mix well and apply a light mist sufficient to wet the tips of the hair. To control Stable Flies, Horse Flies and Deer Flies on animals apply 2 fluid ounces per adult animal, sufficient to wet the hair but not to soak the hide. Repeat treatment once or twice daily or at intervals to give continued protection."

    Q
I live on the water in Michigan and usually have my house sprayed to control spiders and mosquitos.
I would like to use a pump spryer and do it myself. What product can be safe around water and mixed to spray whole house and last for summer?
    A
Riptide ULV Pyrethrin is really meant to be used in fogging applications, but it can be used in a hand pump sprayer for some uses, such as treating cattle. We would recommend using Talstar P (Talstar One) for spiders and mosquitoes. It can be used in a pump sprayer. You will mix 1 fl. oz. per gallon of water. Talstar P can be broadcast across your lawn, sprayed on shrubs, bushes, flowers, etc. It cannot be used on any type of edibles. This will last about 30 days outdoors. Talstar P can also be used indoors around the baseboards and cracks and crevices.

  • Asked by Doug

    Q
How effective is riptide against microscopic biting mites?
    A
Riptide is not very effective in treating for biting mites. It is important to be absolutely sure you are actually dealing with mites. Have the suspected mite identified by a reputable source, such as your local cooperative extension office or a reputable pest control operator. Treatments will vary for different pests. Treatment for say bedbugs is much different than the treatment for mites.  If you do indeed have mites, you must first find the source of the infestation, usually a bird nest or a dead rodent on or in the home. Removal of the infested nest or bird and a thorough cleanup is necessary. For treatment in the home, we recommend you frequently vacuum all carpet and upholstery and dispose of the bag or vacuum contents in a sealed bag outdoors. Spray Sterifab on couches, chairs and other upholstered furniture where you may spend time resting. Use Cimexa Dust in all cracks and crevices around the perimeter of the room. Apply a thin coat of MotherEarth dust to rugs and carpets. Rake (not sweep) nap back and forth, causing dust to enter rug or carpet. Let product sit overnight. Repeat application as necessary and vacuum every 3 - 4 days for effective control. MotherEarth dust does not have a fast knockdown, it can take several days for insects to die after they contact the dust. Onslaught can be used for a faster knockdown. Thoroughly apply as a fine particle broadcast spray using a hand pump sprayer to infested rugs and carpets and other cracks and crevices around the perimeter of each room. Put all clothes through the dryer on high heat to help kill mites and their eggs. We have had many customers use the above recommendations with great success. Most customers report that it can take several months to get rid of all of the mites. Finding and removing the source of the infestation is very important and is the key to getting rid of the mites for good.

    Q
What are the inactive or inert ingredients in this product?
Are your inert ingredients safe for skin contact on humans and dogs? Can I add the Riptide to shampoo to wash the dogs? Would there be any side effects from the pyrethrin or its inert ingredients?
    A
The inert ingredient part of a product is a trade secret and not disclosed to anybody. Riptide is not labeled for use on dogs or humans and should not be utilized for this type of treatment. We do not carry any products that can be used on humans. We do carry Tick Block which is labeled for use on clothing (cannot be used directly on skin). We also carry Permethrin SFR which is labeled for use on dogs. Please take a few moments to read the product labels that are available at the links provided in this answer (product label links are under the pictures of the products on each product page).

    Q
How do I get a rid of midges on my back patio?
During the fall months, in Idaho, we have midges come out in the droves. We get eaten up when we try to enjoy our patio. What would you recommend?
    A

You could use Riptide 5.0% Pyrehtrin ULV with a ULV fogger to kill those out in the open at the time you do so. It is labeled for mosquitoes, ticks, midges and flies. We recommend reading over the product label for a complete list and instructions.

For residual control, Onslaught is labeled for a wide variety of small flying insects including gnats, midges and other small biting flies and should help reduce the amount of midges on your property. Be sure to spray the areas where you have noticed the midges landing or resting as Onslaught will only eliminate those insects that land on treated areas.  Please refer to the product label for mixing and application instructions.

    Q
How long will Riptide last as compared to Talstar P or Mosquito Barrier?
    A
Riptide is a contact kill only. Talstar P (Talstar One) lasts for 30 days outdoors. Mosquito Barrier can last up to a month. If you are looking for a product with the longest residual, we would recommend using Talstar P (Talstar One). Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
