  • Asked by Abraham from Corsicana,tx

    Q
Can I spray Orthene 97 on termites?
I found some termites on my bathroom walls and I am Taking the walls down this coming Friday 4/18/14 can I spray Orthene 97?
    A
Orthene 97 Spray Insecticide is used for insect pests on trees, ornamentals and turf and is not labeled for residential use or for termites.
You will need to determine what kind of termite you have for us to direct you on the best treatment method. If you have drywood termites, you could drill holes into the galleries and inject a product like Termidor Foam to expand and eliminate the colony. You will only be injecting the foam into the studs and around where the activity is, not filling the entire wall void. It would be hard to determine exactly how many cans you would need withouth knowing where you are primarily seeing activity. If you have subterranean termites, you will need to do a trench treatment around the home to eliminate the colony in the ground with a product like Termidor SC. Termidor SC will last in the soil for at least 10 years to both eliminate your current termites and prevent any new ones from entering the home. The Termidor SC trench treatment would kill the existing termites in the wall of your home as well, but you could always do a spot treatment with the Termidor Foam to help speed up the process along with the trench treament. You can see how a homeowner can treat there home for subterranean termites in our article "How To Do A Termite Treatment"

  • Asked by James from Watertown Tn.
    07/16/2014
    Q
How many gallons can a can of Orthene 97 Spray Insecticide make?
    I have bag worms.
    A
Orthene Spray 97 Insecticide is not for residential use. The amount of product that the can will make will depend on the application. We cannot find any systemic insecticides that are labeled for bagworm control. Acephate 75 was labeled for bagworm control but due to new EPA regulations they were forced to change the label and exclude using the product as a systemic. You should also note that systemic products are not the best choice if you already have damaging pests present because the products can take weeks or even months to translocate through large trees from soil applications. The best treatment for bagworms is a direct foliar spray with Talstar. Talstar P is the #1 recommended product for bagworm control. TalstarP is known to have a very low toxicity for mammals making it safe to use around people and pets. Please visit the Talstar P product page where you can review the product label as well as the MSDS. Talstar P applications should start in April and continue monthly through June for bagworm control. Be sure foliage is sprayed thorughly to the point of runoff to achieve adequate coverage.

  • Asked by Rick from Houston
    08/07/2018
    Q
Can Orthene 97 Spray Insecticide be used on fire ant mounds?
    A

Yes, Orthene 97 Spray Insecticide can be applied to fire ant mounds in residential turf. Per the product label: Apply 1 gal. of mix to each mound area by sprinkling the mound until it is wet and treat a 4 foot diameter circle around the mound. For best results apply the material in the early morning or late afternoon when the ants are most active. Applications made under prolonged hot and dry conditions may be ineffective due to the location of the ants deep within the nest.

For broadcast applications and broader control of the colony, we would suggest using Extinguish Plus as it also contains an IGR to stop the reproduction process and fully eliminate the colony.

  • Asked by Alika from Austin, Tx
    06/23/2014
    Q
Does Orthene 97 work on Leaf Cutter ants if so whats the ratio for 1 gal of water?
    A
Orthene 97 is not labeled for the eradication of leaf cutter ants. Leaf cutter ants can be a difficult pest to get rid of. The colonies are large and the ants make their own food so poison baits only have limited effects on this species of ants. According to several university websites, Maxforce Complete Bait Granules containing hydramethylnon are some what effective, though they will usually eliminate only about 30% of a large colony in one treatment and will need to be reapplied several times.  Deltagard granules is one of the only products actually labeled for leaf cutter ants. The product label recommends treating the mound directly and lightly watering the granules in. Again it may take several treatments to get the desired results. We also recommend contacting your local cooperative extension office to see if they have any recommendations for products that have worked for other people in your region.
