Q
Is Bifenthrin (Talstar) or a different product better suited for rodent/bird mites?
After a month of getting mysterious bites on our bodies, we found mites in the bathroom. Not a huge infestation but 8-10 here and there. An entomologist identified the mite as most likely rodent/bird mites. We have yet to find the source of the mites as no nests or burrows have been found by us or an exterminator. He suggested using bifenthrin and diatomaceous earth to control the problem. I have yet to use bifenthrin. I sealed up the cracks and gaps in the bathroom as best I could and laid down diatomaceous earth around the toilet. I saw fewer mites after this but they continue to appear especially on the toilet. Should I go ahead and try bifenthrin or is there another product better suited for this siutation?
A
Talstar is one of the best insecticdes for mite control. The product label recommends using 1 oz of Talstar per gallon of water and spray around baseboards, window frames, exhaust vent, toilet, and under the sink (around piping). It will also be benficial to spray along baseboards, window frames, door frames, thresholds, back behind and underneath appliances. Also, performing a perimeter treatment on the outside of your home is recommended. Spray the foundation of your home about 2-3 feet up the side of the structure and come out 2-3 feet on the ground. Be sure to spray the exterior of window frames, door frames, and where piping enters your home.

Q
Mud Daubers
How does this product fare against mud daubers? i dont see them listed on the insect label. i'm looking for something that has a residual killing effect for mud daubers and all types of wasps and bees
A
Talstar P will kill mud daubers that come into contact with treated areas for a sufficient amount of time to receive a lethal dose. You will need to dilute 1 fl oz of Talstar P per gallon of water and broadcast spray over the areas where you have noticed activity. Most folks notice only very limited results from broadcast sprays of insecticides for cicada killers because they don't land and walk around for a long enough time before entering their underground burrow. For a more direct treatment, you can use Delta dust in each individual burrow. You may also want to consider our Wasp and Hornet Control Products.

Garrett from Gonzales, LA asked:

Q
What are some of the best products for general pest control?
I am wanting to do my own pest control and get rid of my pest company. I want to make sure that I am using a good product to ensure quality results. After looking over my past few treatments from my pest control company, they use a different product each time they come. Thanks for your time!
A
The best general pest control can depend on what region you are located in. One of the all time favorite general pest control products is Talstar P. Talstar has a long residual, so it keeps on killing pests for over three months after you've sprayed it. Plus, Talstar One is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and won't break down easily with rainfall.

Kris from Eugene or asked:

Q
Can you apply Talstar with high pressure sodium grow lights on?
Or like some miticides, should the lights be off? And do you need to mix with purified water or can tap water be good enough? Using for broad mites and spider mites.
A
We are not aware of any lighting restrictions that should be followed while applying Talstar P.  This product is not specificially a miticide but more of a general pest control product label to treat specific types of mites.  You could contact the manufacturer directly to confirm any lighting issues, FMC can be reached at 800-321-1362.  There is no special requirements on the type of water you use, tap water will be fine.

Q
Can Talstar P kill broad mites and spider mites on indoor plants?
We tested it on one plant at 7 mills per gal and added 1/2 teas. surfactant and it seemed to work. But the pamphlet that came with it doesn't really say how to do what need it to. So any advice would be great. Thanks
A
Yes, Talstar P will kill spider mites and broad mites. You should mix 0.5 fluid once per gallon of water and spray household plants paying close attention to the underside of the leaves. Spray thoroughly but do not allow run off to occur.

Robert from Dallas, Texas asked:

Q
What would be a good all around insecticide spray and rat poison and boxes for a warehouse and home?
A
A great, cost effective option for insect sprays would be our Talstar P. Its a clear drying, non-staining, odorless concentrate that is mixed with water and can be used indoor and outdoors. Its label covers over 100 different insects and once dry, is safe for people and pets to resume normal activity in the treated area. For rodent bait and bait stations, you have several different options available. You could go with one of our Rodent Kits for sturdy, tamper resistant locking bait stations and the fastest killing bait. Or if you are looking for larger quantities of the bait, you could get a case of stations like the Protecta LP Rat Bait Stations and a pail of the Contrac Blox, which is one of our top selling/performing baits available.

Q
Mosquito yard treatment
I am looking for a mosquito yard treatment for a gravel based yard about 800sqft in Summerland Key Florida. We get alot of rain and the humidity is high, so standing water is abundant as well as lots of tropical plant life.
A
We would recommend the Mosquito control kit. Talstar will hold up in rain after it has dried. Please be sure like any other insecticide to make your application when it is not raining. Talstar is safe to apply to non-edible plant life. Please be aware that this product is harmful to aquatic life and watch for run-off areas. The Bti Dunks will work great in large bodies of standing water, as it is a larvacide.

Ron from Livingston, TX asked:

Q
What product is best to use in a Spider-B-Gone misting system at my lake house?
I want to control spiders and insects at the top of my exterior walls. I have been switching between Riptide 5.0% ULV and Pyranha 1-10 PX
A
We are not familiar with that misting system. Talstar is a great product to use in a misting sprayer. Riptide and Pyrahna are still top choices for misting systems.

Phil from Albany, OR asked:

Q
After mixing, how long can Talstar be stored?
Mixing directions is for 1 gallon -- did not use it all up. How long can I store it mixed in a sprayer?
A
Like any other concentrate product of this sort, Talstar P needs to be used with 24-48 hours after mixing. After that point the product will start to not only break down and be less effective, but will eat at your sprayer parts as well. If you do not think you will need the full 1 gallon of solution for the area you are treating, you can cut the dilution in half and mix up only half a gallon at a time.

Rich from Gloucester UK asked:

Q
Hi, Can I use washing up liquid/similar to act as a surfactant for Talstar P for bird mite?
I am in the process of tidying the house and treating room by room. I have found and eliminated what I think are the sources which were vacated house sparrow and starling nests in my eaves. The house dates from 1690's so I guess this would happen sooner or later! I want to treat wooden, carpet and linoleum flooring of various types but would like the surfactant to offer more 'hold' of the chemical. I will look to retreat in 7 days to catch the life cycle.
A
A surfactant is not usually needed when using Talstar P and is generally only to be used if you are trying to protect a plant with waxy leaves and need the product to stick a bit better.  Talstar P is not actually labeled to treat bird mites and it is only labeled to apply in cracks and crevices indoors.  When treating for bird mites usually you would want to spray all carpeted areas and lightly spray the flooring and to do that you would need a product like Onslaught which will give you a wider usage range indoors. Please review our article on How To Control Bird Mites for complete information.

Michelle from massachusetts asked:

Q
Will Talstar kill fleas outside? How quick does it work for an infested area?
My dog keeps getting fleas outside and then carrying in house. The dog has been washed and house bombed with flea bombs but fleas keep returning.
A
The best products for flea control outdoors would be Talstar P mixed with NyGuard IGR. The Talstar is the insecticide that will kill the fleas and leave a residual, and the NyGuard is the birth control that will halt the infestation from growing. Mix these in your sprayer together with water and spray any areas outdoors where you are having a problem with fleas or any other insect. After your initial application of the two products, you will respray the Talstar by itself every 2 weeks until the infestation has dropped in number, and then back off to spraying only once every 30 days. The NyGuard IGR will typically hold up to the outdoor elements for 4 months but if you have heavy rains or long periods of drought and heat, you may want to reapply again earlier than this with one of your monthly Talstar applications. For indoor control, you would use Ultracide which is a flea aerosol. It comes ready to use and has both the adulticide and igr (birth control) to provide you with the same type of control indoors as you have outdoors. You will need to go through and vacuum all flooring and furniture prior to using the product. Once vacuumed, use the Ultracide to spray down all carpets, hardwoods, baseboards, rugs, pet bedding and furniture to eliminate the fleas. After application you will leave the home until the product has had time to dry which normally takes about an hour or so. Once dry, all pets, children and adults can re-enter the home and resume normal activity. You will need to vacuum daily for 14 days and then do a second application of the Ultracide.

SYL from AHOSKIE NO. CAR. asked:

Q
What pest control works for gnats inside and is safe for humans?
A
To treat gnats indoors we recommend using the Flyweb Fly light and a crack and crevice spray like Talstar. The Flyweb will attract flying insects and then catch them with the attached glueboard. Talstar is to be applied to cracks, crevice, baseboards, entry points. Talstar is safe for people and pets to be around after the treated area has dried.

Ronald from San Bernardino, CA asked:

Q
Should I mix my Talstar with the Gentrol I bought for German roach infestation
I have treated a rental home with Talstar P twice. The second time I used cy-kick on cracks and crevices then follow up with another round of talstar. I still have a significant infestation. I used to do pest control so I know how to apply these product and how to prep. I just purchased some gentrol and max force bait. I would like to know if you recommend another product to mix with the gentrol instead of the talstar.
A
You could certainly mix Gentol with Talstar or Cy-Kick. You would mix 1oz Talstar with 1 oz Gentrol into one gallon water. Make sure to spray in areas you are not baiting.
