    Q
What chemical can be used to selectively eradicate poa annua from my fescue lawn?
    A

Because poa annua and and fescue are so closely related, there are few products that will kill the poa annua without also harming the fescue.  The only one we are currently aware of is called Prograss. Your other options would be to either spot-treat with a Roundup-type product and then reseed with the fescue in those areas, or you can use a preemergent like Prodiamine 65 WDG in the fall to prevent the poa from growing in the first place.

Can Prograss EC Herbicide be combined with Tenacity as a preemergent when seeding with TTTF in the fall?
    A

According to the Prograss EC Herbicide product label, If overseeding with turf-type tall fescue, you can apply Prograss at the same time you are overseeding, therefore, you could tank mix with Tenacity if overseeding with TTTF.

    Q
How well does Prograss EC Herbicide work in the spring if it was not use previously in the fall?
And can it be used in eagle rye grass?
    A

It is recommended to use Prograss EC Herbicide in both a spring and fall application to get the best results. However, you can start with a spring application and still get good results. This product is also labeled for use in rye grasses, so it should work effectively in eagle rye.

    Q
How soon after applying Prograss EC Herbicide can you reseed/overseed with Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue?
    A

According to the manufacturer and the Prograss EC Herbicide product label, you would not want to reseed Kentucky Bluegrass until 6 weeks after the last application of the product. Prograss should be applied to Tall Fescue in the fall and when overseeding with Tall Fescue turf-type, Prograss application and the seeding may be done simultaneously.

    Q
Can Prograss EC Herbicide be used on Floratam grass?
    A
We apologize but the ProGrass EC Herbicide is not labeled for use on Floratam because of how sensitive this type of St Augustine grass is. If you would like, you can provide us with what you are trying to eliminate from your Floratam lawn for us to see if there are any products currently on the market that meet your needs. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Asked by Frank from Douglassville, Pa
    07/30/2018
    Q
What Herbicide(s) do you recommend for pre and post emergent treatment of poa annua in Rye, Fescue and Bluegrass grass mixture.
    A

For post-emergent control of Poa Annua in cool season grass there's only one that is labeled for it and it's Prograss. You can hit it with a high nitrogen fertilizer to burn it out or wait until temperatures hit 85 degrees and up for it to die out. The best time to treat is in the fall with a pre-emergent, one of the best ones for this is Pendulum or Dimension.

Your other options would be to either spot-treat with a Roundup-type product and then reseed with the cool season grass you have in those areas.

  • Asked by George from Seattle, Wa

    Q
Overseeding Safety Interval for Fine Fescue and Colonial Bentgrass?
What is the Overseeding Safety Interval (Weeks After Treatment) for Fine Fescue and Colonial Bentgrass? I have applied the second treatment on what is likely now a mostly perennial ryegrass lawn and would like to overseed with a fine fescue/colonial bentgrass mix. (10 % SR 7150 Colonial Bentgrass, 40 % SR 5210 Strong Creeping Red Fescue, 50 % SR 5100 or SR 5130 Chewings).
    A
For specific recommendations on overseeding your yard, we recommend contacting your local Master Gardner. They are experts in your county that are familiar with the weather, soil and turf conditions and can best advise on a schedule that will best meet your needs.

  • Asked by Kris from Ridgecrest, Ca
    03/24/2018
    Q
Is it too late for an early spring application of Prograss EC Herbicide on non-dormant bermudagrass?
I have a hybrid bermudagrass lawn that is NOT overseeded with rye. The lawn has been practically overtaken by poa annua, but the bermudagrass is now starting to emerge from dormancy. Is it too late for an early spring application, and will an application harm the bermudagrass? Do I need to wait until late fall/early winter to attempt to control the annual bluegrass?
    A

You should not apply Prograss EC Herbicide to Bermudagrass during Spring transition. Per the product label: "The final PROGRASS Herbicide application should be made to Bermudagrass no later than February 1st or 4 weeks prior to breaking of winter dormancy. Late applications (within 4 weeks of breaking dormancy) to turf that will be breaking dormancy may temporarily delay resumption of active growth (spring green-up) of Bermudagrass in the spring." Another popular product for controlling poa annua in Bermudagrass is Certainty Herbicide. Certainty will also work best when the poa is young (before tillering). We do not recommend applying post-emergent herbicides to Bermudagrass during Spring green up. In warm areas, the poa will die out on its own in the summer, and then we would recommend using a pre-emergent herbicide such as Prodiamine 65 WDG in late summer and fall to prevent the poa annua going forward.
