Why use a mattress encasement for bed bug control?
Bed Bug Mattress encasements are a recommended addition to any bed bug treatment program. You will still need to treat infested areas of the bedrooms. However, because the #1 breeding ground for bed bugs is the mattress and boxspring, you can now just spray and then zip up these critical areas which will eliminate a large part of the infestation. In addition, this can save an infested mattress so you don't have to throw it out and buy a replacement. Any eggs and/or bed bugs trapped in the encasement will eventually die. Mattress encasements are also nice because they provide very few if any places for bed bugs to hide and harbor (compare that with all of the folds, seams, nooks and crannies of a mattress and box spring), and they are clean and white making future investigation and treatment easy. Also consider that if you should find bed bugs on your mattress again at some point in the future, treatment would be as easy as taking off the mattress encasement and washing it in hot water. Again, the key harborage areas for bed bugs would be protected, and so would your mattress investment.
We recommend keeping the mattress encasements intact for at least 12 months (bed bugs can live a very long time without a blood meal). The bed bugs and eggs inside will die, and the mattress will be protected from further infestation.

So far, so good!

After we "inherited" some bed bugs from our neighbors we ordered Protect a Bed mattress encasements for everyone. The encasements make it a lot easier to see any signs of bed bugs and give us a little peace of mind in the kids room. I do recommend getting them for all of the beds, although the box springs cover for adult mattresses are a little thin. These are bright white and make it a lot easier to see signs of bed bugs. Just check them often for signs of buggers and to also make sure that they do not get torn. These are not a cure all! You need to treat your place but these encasements make it a lot easier to monitor any problem and lock in and trap any bud bugs you already have. I highly recommend a high temperature steamer to treat mattresses without chemicals as well, especially in the kids rooms, the less chemicals the better. That is why I think these are great.

July 22, 2010P. asked:
QHow can the Protect-A-Bed AllerZip Baby Crib Cover be 100% cotton and waterproof? It's critical for a baby bed!
AThere are two layers to the Protect-A-Bed AllerZip Baby Crib Cover basically. The top layer, the one that actually comes into contact with the infant is 100% cotton. Just beneath that layer is a very unique material called "Miracle Membrane". This material is waterproof and bedbug bite proof.
August 23, 2010Amy asked:
QWhat is the "miracle membrane" made of?
AThe Miracle Membrane is made of a special polyurethane that is stretchy and water proof. The Protect-A-Bed mattress encasements also have a layer of 100% white terry cotton over the Miracle Membrane so they are soft, cool and comfortable to sleep on.
