Assembly of misting equipment

Attach the blower elbow to the blower housing and secure with both screws. Ensure the elbow can swivel easily. Push pleated hose onto blower elbow and secure with clamp.

Assembly of the handle, spray tube and spray nozzle

Push handle onto spray tube (start from the front) and fix in the required position. A guide on the spray tube will ensure vertical positioning.

Push the spray tube with twist coupling into the pleated hose until locked. Secure with the clamp.

Note: The spray tube can be twisted and turned in the pleated hose with the handle. Ensure that all hose and cable connections are safe and without sharp bends.

Place spray nozzle on to spray tube (vertical to handle) and secure.

Push formula delivery hose (2 pieces) on the nipple of the handle and to the spray nozzle. Secure the hose alongside the pleated hose. Shut on/off the tap (vertical position), fill some plain water in formula tank and check for any leakage.

Filling

When handling the spraying agents, always follow the safety instructions of these operating instructions and the information provided by the manufacturer of the particular spraying agent.

Spraying agent volume: Mix the spraying agents according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the spraying agent. Choose the appropriate volume according to requirements.

Mixing spraying agents: Only mix spraying agents out in the open. Never do this inside living spaces, stables or in storage spaces that are used for food or animal feed. Never mix the spraying agent directly in the spraying agent tank.

Spraying agents in powder form:

  • Mix the spraying agent in a separate container, not in the spraying agent tank.
  • Ensure that the mixture is thoroughly mixed before pouring it into the spraying agent tank.

Liquid spraying agents:

  • Fill 1/4 of the spraying agent tank with clean water.
  • Then pre-mix the spraying agent with clean water in a separate container according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the spraying agent.
  • Pour the pre-mixed spraying agent into the spraying agent tank.
  • Top up with the required amount of clean water according to the manufacturer's instructions.

When using spraying agents that have been mixed from herbal preparations, the liquid needs to be pre-filtered.

For filling the equipment, always use the strainer inside the filler neck and observe the filler area through the filling process.

The strainer has a mesh size of 0.55 mm. Only use original SOLO strainers, part no.: 42 00 104 with standard mesh size.

Avoid any direct contact of the filling hose and the contents of the spraying agent tank.

Fill level markings are applied to the side of the spraying agent tank.

When filling up the tank, ensure that you do not fill above the top marking (maximum fill volume).

Never allow the spraying agent tank to overflow or public bodies of water, rainwater drains or sewage drains to become contaminated. Immediately wipe up any spilled spraying agent.

Identification of the tank contents:

Attach the relevant sticker to the spraying agent tank to indicate the contents of the tank (i.e., herbicide, fungicide or insecticide).

The designation of the spraying agent used has to be attached to the device and has to be updated every time when the spraying agent is changed.

Starting / Stopping the engine

  • Before every use and before every start of the mist blower check and ensure the machine is in a good and safe condition. (throttle operation, ignition switch, safety devices, shoulder strap and check for fuel leaks)
  • During the starting procedure and while operating the mist blower, the operator must have secure footing and have a safe body position.
  • The engine starting site should be at least 3 meters away from the refueling site.

Starting with a cold engine

  • Switch ignition switch to ”I” position and close the liquid tap.
  • Close choke with choke lever.
  • Press primer several times until fuel is visible in the primer.
  • Place your left hand on the formula tank of the mist blower. Hold the starter handle (Fig. 1.Pos. 7) with your right hand and pull the handle up slowly until resistance is felt. Then pull up firmly and rapidly until the engine ‘fires’.
  • Once the engine tries to start, immediately open the choke and continue to start until the engine is running.

Starting with the warm engine after a short stop

  • Leave choke in ”open” position and start the engine.

Shutting off engine

  • Release throttle lever and move ignition switch to ”Stop” position until engine stops.

    Compared to Sthil SR-450...

    By Patrick on 09/19/2012

    Verified Purchase

I have used Solo and Sthil mistblowers for years in the pest control industry. For many years I leaned towards Sthil and the SR-420, but when the Sthil SR-450 hit the market and showed many major flaws (regular leaks, exhaust clogging) I begon to explore other options. I tried many other brands, before revisiting Solo and trying out this newer model. I would say that my biggest setback is the high price, although this website offered a killer deal. Even this price is $100 more expensive than the Sthil SR-450. That said, the Solo has never broken down on me. It runs a little rich, its a little louder than many others, but overall its a great unit if you are looking for an alternative to Sthil.

    Solo 451 Mosquito Fogger/Mist blower

    By Steve on 04/17/2012

    Verified Purchase

Awesome machine!! Well worth the money if you live in an area where mosquitos make enjoying the pool or hot tub in the evening impossible. Last year I paid a major Pest Control company $100.00 a month to fog my property to control the mosquitos, it worked great but we were at the mercy of a company who was not prompt, missed appointments or rain delays = Mosquito re-infestation forcing us inside the house. I am now in control of my pest control thanks to DoMyOwnPestControl.com, I purchaced a gallon of Talstar P concentrate to go with my new Blower/Mister and it appears to work wonderfully, I sprayed my yard 2 weeks ago and have not seen 1 mosquito since, that is saying something considering I live 1 block from a large lake in Southwest Michigan. I highly recommend the Solo 451 Blower and Talstar P insecticide, I received my order quickly, I highly recommend ordering from DoMyOwnPestControl.com, I will definitely be a repeat customer.

    Mosquito Free

    By Jeff on 01/14/2015

This works. It isn't cheap, but it works. I was rather hesitant to spend this kind of money, but my desire to use my backyard in the summer won out. We live in the Memphis, TN area, in a wooded lot with a lot of bushes: i.e. mosquito heaven. I would get multiple bites just walking to the mailbox and back, let alone when our three kids would play in the backyard. If we wanted to spend any time outside, we had to drench ourselves with bug spray, otherwise they feasted. I finally got fed up staring longingly at my backyard through the windows and started looking into ways I could control the mosquitoes in our yard. I bought one of those handheld propane foggers, and it sort of worked for a short time. There wasn't a residual, and the mosquitoes found us soon after. Local companies wanted up to $150/month to fog my yard, and I was just about to break down and do that when I figured that this fogger would pay for itself pretty quickly if I used it for just a couple years. I'm glad I did: mosquitoes are hardly a problem anymore in my backyard. This isn't a 100% solution for me, but we can deal with a bite or two every once in a while in order to go outside whenever we want without bug spray. It's almost strange to go outside now without mosquitoes swarming us. If I go too long between treatments, the kids ask me to kill the bugs now. I'm still trying to find the right combination of concentrate to water, saturation of my bushes, frequency of fogging, and dosage setting on the fogger. It seems like the bug population starts to pick up after about 2-3 weeks, so I'm not sure if that's me, or just the reality of where I live. The “problem” is that I only had to fog a handful of times (once I got it this past summer) in order to control the bugs, so I didn't have many opportunities to tweak how I fogged. The machine runs really well, and starts pretty easily. It is heavy: 4 gallons of water and fuel, on top of a 25 lbs engine and that's 50+ lbs. Once you get it on your back it's comfortable, but it can be awkward trying to get it there. You also get an additional benefit of being able to use this to apply Talstar to the outside of your house too. I did that while I was treating the yard, instead of using a pump sprayer inside and out like I normally have and we haven't had any bugs inside. I can't speak to the longevity as I just got it this past summer. But, if you something to control the mosquitoes in your yard, this is it.

Good but a few things could be better

    By Homeowner on 07/16/2014

Bought this primarily to spray all of the landscaped and other surrounding area around our house for mosquitoes. First the cons... Based on my experience with farm spraying and from reviews of others, I immediately bought the optional pump. I'm glad I bought it and in fact think it should be standard equipment. There is no way you will get an even spray volume distribution by the standard gravity feed unless you are spraying small plants that can be done with a low and constant nozzle height. And you can't spray the upper parts of tall plants or surfaces at all unless you have the pump. The pump also has a return line to the tank that serves to keep the spray solution mixed. This website doesn't have the optional pump listed, but informed me by email that it was available from them. I had already found it elsewhere in stock with easy automated ordering before I received the email reply from this site, and it arrived before the blower (but I was pleased with how quickly this site shipped the blower as well). Be aware that the optional pump is about $125 (delivered price). It also may be a bit of a challenge for some to install if you aren't at least somewhat of a handyman type. The other problem I encountered is the flex hose doesn't attach securely to the elbow. It slips over a barbed male nipple and is secured by a hose clamp. But the hose barbs are too small (hardly a barb at all) and it's hard to get the clamp tight enough (it's plastic and I was afraid of stripping the screw threads in the plastic or breaking the plastic band if I tightened the clamp any tighter). The first time of use the flex hose came off almost immediately. I put it back on and tightened the clamp tighter, and it still only lasted about half way through the first spray tank load before coming off again. So I put it back on, tightened the hose clamp, and then put two small screws through the flex hose and elbow nipple, adjacent to the hose clamp. That fixed the problem. Other than these issues, which I was satisfactorily able to overcome, I really like this blower. I've only had it about 2 weeks and have only sprayed everything twice (but multiple tank loads each time), so I can't speak first hand to longevity, but the engine seems to be well made, high compression, and starts on first or 2nd pull every time so far. I like that the spray tank and pump system is very easy to rinse/flush when done for the day.

The mist blower works as expected. No problems, so far. I also use Solo's backpack sprayers and have had many years of good service with them.

Q
Talastar P vs Bifen IT

I just got a response from another question suggesting this Solo 451 product along with Bifen IT. In all recommendations I reviewed on this website it is recommended Talstar P as safer product. I understand Bifen is very toxic. Can you please explain the differences between both products? My property has a natural pond in the back (200 ft from the house) and it is a wooden area. Thanks

A
Talstar P and Bifen IT are essentially the same product but made by different manufacturers. Bifen IT is the low cost, generic version of Talstar with the same efficiency. Talstar P and Bifen IT both share the benefit of being a low toxic option with minimal dermal toxicity. However, since you are close a pond we would recommend using EcoVia EC which is a safe, natural, residual insecticide that can be safely used around bodies of water without harming aquatic life.

Q
We've just purchased a Solo 451 backpack mist blower from you. What is the best solution for mosquito control?
A
Our best recommendation for mosquito control is the Talstar P. It is a great safe insecticide that can be used in a wide variety of areas to control mosquitoes as well as a plethera of other insects. The Talstar is used at the rate of 1 ounce per gallon of water so you would need 3 ounces for the 3 gallon tank of the Solo 451 unit. Concentrate your spray on areas where mosquitoes are more prone to harbor, like nearby bushes and dense foliage of trees that can hold moisture under the leaves.

Q
How do you mix the oil and gas for the Solo 451 Mist Blower?
A

The oil and gas mixture will depend on which oil is used inside of the Solo 451 Mist Blower. If you are using the Solo 2T Oil, the mixing ratio is 1:50. If you are using any other two stroke oil, the mixing ratio is 1:25.

I would like to purchase the Solo 451 soon to treat 25 15" spruce trees. I would like to purchase this liquid booster pump at the same time I purchase the mist blower. Thanks!

Q
Has the Solo 451 been tested or used to apply herbicides in forestry applications?

Specifically invasive species such as Kudzu, etc. using Triclopyr or Transline, etc.

A
We contacted Solo and they said that any herbicide or insecticide can be used in the Solo unit. So any product that includes Triclopyr or any other ingredient that would be diluted with water in the tank will work fine.
