Surflan Pro Herbicide (Oryzalin 40.4%)

Surflan Pro herbicide is a selective pre-emergent surface-applied herbicide for the control of a broad spectrum of weeds and grasses found in ornamental plantings, bulbs, ground covers/perennials, established warm-season turfgrass, Christmas tree plantations, non-bearing trees and vines, and non-cropland and industrial sites.

We also carry Surflan in a 2.5 gallon container.

Surflan Pro herbicide is a pre-emergent surface-applied solution for the control of a broad spectrum of weeds and grasses found in ornamental plantings, bulbs, ground covers/perennials, established warm-season turfgrass, Christmas tree plantations, non-bearing trees and vines, and non-cropland and industrial sites.

Surflan Pro is orange in color and may cause temporary discoloration of sprayed surfaces. If this discoloration is undesirable, it may be altered by using a commercially available colorant such as Blazon or removed by spraying surface with water or washing with an industrial cleaner immediately after application. Surflan Pro may also be applied with mulch colorants, such as Mulch Magic or Nu-Mulch.

5 of 5 stars  Surflan Pro Herbicide
By Jeffrey in Southeastern, WI on 05/11/2011

Actually searched this product out. As a past lawn care professional and firm believer in liquid herbicides/slow release granular fertilizers, Surflan was the product we used, exclusively for pre-emergent crabgrass control. It never let us down. It mixes easily and can be combined with your early Spring broadleaf weed application in the same mix. Doesn't clog, even fine spray nozzles and rinses clean. The coloring is a great plus for avoiding excessive overlapping during application and wasting product. Excellent full season control. I don't use anything else.

5 of 5 stars  Amazing product
By Sarah in Denver, CO on 05/18/2014

I'm not a big fan of putting chemicals on my lawn, but I've been breaking my back trying to tame the beasties in our lawn for two years now since we moved in. Half of our yard was new lawn, and half of it was old. The new half was particularly plagued by weeds, so I decided to give the pre-emergent herbicide a shot this year, and after some research decided on this product. I applied it to the new lawn early in March, as soon as we had a relatively mild weekend. And the results? Lets just say I can't wait to do it again next year to the entire lawn. It looks as if someone drew a line in the sand in our backyard--the half that had the pre-emergent is spotless--not a dandelion in sight. The other half? Lets just say it looks like a war zone. I really wish I had done the entire yard, because this stuff is incredible.

This stuff is great! I have applied this to my yard 3 times over a year and love the results! I even spray part of my neighbors yard that connects with mine ( they don't know it though) and the part I sprayed is weed free and their other half isn't.

4 of 5 stars  Surflan Pro for pre-emergent weed control
By Laren in Surprise, AZ on 03/27/2015
    Verified Purchase

Mixes easily and sprays out well in a 2 gallon sprayer. Very worthwhile calibrating the sprayer as directed in the instructions. The product is so thick that it clings to the sidewalls of the measuring compartment of the container and therefore it is not easy to get a quick exact measurement. Would be be nice to have an separate ounce graduated measuring cup come with it. At the wait and see stage as to whether it does the weed prevention trick!

By Gunny in Moore, Ok on 03/13/2016

This is the third year that I have used this product. Followed instructions and made sure to water it in if no rain expected. Great results! I put it down on Bermuda grass while dormant and before winter season for winter weeds. I use a backpack pump sprayer and do entire yard. Make sure to not rake or disturb soil after application. Best Price anywhere and Free shipping and Product was here 2 days after ordering. Thanks!

QWhat is the difference between Surflan AS and Surflan Pro?

AThere is no difference between the two.  Surflan AS and Surflan Pro are the same product.  The manufacturer, for whatever reason, call them different things to differentiate between the product sizes, but they are the same product.

QHow many ounces of Surflan do I need to use per gal of water?
I have evergreen trees planted in rows. How many ounces of Surflan do I need per gallon to control weeds for 4 months? Cultivation of soil around trees is not possible. Will this product still work?

ASurflan Pro is a pre-emergent weed control product. Surflan Pro does not control emerged weeds, established weeds, weeds growing from stolens, rhizomes, or root pieces. The area to be treated with this product needs to be weed free at the time of the application. You will need to use 3 fl oz of product per 1-2 gallons of water for 1,000 sq ft. The water in this case is just a carrier and you need to use enough water to make sure you get even coverage and to make sure you are getting the correct amount of product over the 1,000 sq ft area. There are directions on page 7 of the Surflan Pro product label that explains how to properly calibrate your sprayer.

QIs Surflan Pro a good choice for bare ground to prevent spring weeds and foxtails?

ASurflan Pro is a great product for treatment of bare ground but when applying it to bare ground it should be applied at a higher rate of concentration, which would be 4 quarts per acre.

QDoes Surflan Pro control crabgrass?
I have a lot of crabgrass on my lawn. Can I use this product next spring to keep the crabgrass from growing?

ASurflan Pro is labeled to control crabgrass in your turf and is a great product to use as a pre-emergent.  You should apply pre-emergents now in the fall, and then again in the spring typically.  For optimum times in your area to apply a pre-emergent, you should contact your local county extension office.

QWhat happens when you apply Surflan Pro Herbicide to cold season turf?
This product is used for warm season turf but what happens if I used it in Pennsylvania to cold season turf? Less effective but still works?

A

Surflan Pro Herbicide will harm cool season turf per the label; it could potentially damage these grasses or prevent them from growing.

We would recommend using Prodiamine 65 WDG. It is a very good pre-emergent product that is safe for use on all established turf types. Also, please check out our Cool Season Lawn Schedule for information on when to use products.

QWill Surflan Pro Herbicide stop the germination of vetch?

A

Vetch is not on the Surflan Pro label,†so while it certainly could stop the germination and the vetch from emerging, we cannot say for sure since it has not been tested. We couldn't find vetch on the product label of any other pre emergents either so you may want to check with your local ag department or cooperative extension office to see what others in your area may be using for vetch control.†

QCan Surflan Pro be used directly over junipers?
Will it suppress dandelions?

A

Surflan Pro Herbicide (Oryzalin 40.4%) can be applied around junipers but will not suppress dandelions per the product label instructions. We do carry Monterey Weed Impede RTU that kills existing dandelions and prevent them from growing. Please refer to the product label instructions for specific information on application.

QIs Surflan Pro Herbicide safe for use on St. Augustine grass to kill southern sandburs?

A

Surflan Pro Herbicide can be applied to well established St. Augustine lawns and it is labeled for sandburs. Please refer to the product label for full mixing and application instructions. This product is a pre-emergent so it will prevent, not kill existing weeds.

QIs Surflan Pro Herbicide the brand name product or generic version?
In the product reviews, one person stated: Works as advertised and much cheaper than the original - So will I be getting the brand name or a generic version of Surflan when I purchase

A

We sell both the name brand Surflan AS Herbicide made by United Phosphorous, Inc.†and a generic - or post-patent - version made by Agrisel. †You can browse all the products we sell that contain the active ingredient Oryzalin here. The formulation from Agrisel does come in several sizes for convenience, while many name-brand professional herbicides will only come in larger sizes, such as 2.5 Gallons.

QWhat is the waiting period after application of Surflan Pro before plowing the ground for peas?

A

Surflan Pro Herbicide (Oryzalin 40.4%) is not labeled to be used in any area where crops are going to be planted. †It would be recommended to wait 1 year before planting anything edible in an area it was applied to. †We do carry the†Monterey Vegetable and Ornamental Weeder which is the only pre-emergent we carry labeled to be used around vegetables as directed on the product label.

QWill Surflan Pro Herbicide prevent weeds from growing where I plan to build a greenhouse later?
I have an area of bare dirt where I plan to build a greenhouse with a perimeter of mulched soil around it. I cannot start the project until late summer and want to keep the soil bare until them. What product will keep most things including grass from growing until then. I live in high elevation sagebrush in Utah.

A

Surflan Pro could be used to help prevent the listed weeds from growing in the area. †Another option would be to use a vegetation management product such as TVC or Pramitol which kill anything currently growing (if any) as well as prevent anything from growing in the area for up to 1 year.

QWhat herbicides can I use that will not kill my ground cover?
I have ground cover. Weed removal is tedious.

A

Depending on the type of weeds you have in your ground cover and the type of ground cover you have will depend on what product options may work for you. Without more specifics we cannot say for certain that the following products will get rid of what you have and will not harm your ground cover. You will want to check the product labels to ensure they meet your needs.†

For post emergent control (killing something that has already come up in your treatment areas) if the weeds are grassy you could use something like Grass Out Max or Fertilome Over the Top. This will only kill and target grasses coming up in ornamental beds. If you have broadleaf weeds, hand pulling or spot treating with roundup for post emergent control is about the only option. Broadleaf weed control products cannot be sprayed over the top of ground covers as they are broadleaf plants and will likely be harmed as well.†

For pre emergent control (preventing weeds/grasses from coming up through treatment areas) you have a lot more options to choose from. Surflan Pro/Surflan AS, Gallery 75 DF, Snapshot and many others would be wonderful options that you can use in spring and fall to help prevent persistant weeds from coming back throughout the season.†

Again, please check the product labels on each page to ensure that the weeds you are targeting and the ground cover you have are on the label as safe for use.†
