How Talstar Pro (Talstar One) Works
Talstar P is a liquid concentrate insecticide which contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Talstar P does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Talstar P is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Talstar P will be most effective as a barrier with a thorough application. Talstar P residual can last up to 3 months.
Talstar P (Talstar One) controls over 75 different pests -- everything from stink bugs, bed bugs, spiders, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ticks and fleas to pillbugs, chinch bugs, earwigs, millipedes, Dichondra Flea Beetles, spittlebugs and more. It is very effective on Japanese Beetles, clover mites, ants, termites, spiders, scorpions, roaches, army worms, mealybugs, mites, grasshoppers, pillbugs, cutworms, sod webworms, weevils, leaf miners, box elder bugs, bees, wasps, sowbugs, crickets, and turf and ornamental pests. Please see below for complete list.

Talstar P is an ideal broad-spectrum insecticide for prevention, maintenance, or active infestations of over 75 pests. Talstar P provides a long-lasting barrier around the perimeters of structures for crawling insects such as ants, beetles, and roaches; protects ornamental plants from hazardous pests like mealybugs; helps control nuisance flying insects such as mosquitoes; protects lawns from turf pests such as chinch bugs; and even has an expanded label to include treatment of stink bugs. See below for complete list of approved usage sites.
ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Bifenthrin - 7.9%
Inside, outside, and around the perimeter of structures, food handling areas, lawns, turf and ornamental trees and shrubs. NOT for use on food and vegetable gardens. Talstar is best applied with a sprayer. Always read the label completely before use.
- 1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.
- 1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.
- ¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.
- 1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-256 gallons of finished solution or covers 128,000 to 256,000 square feet for broadcast application.
Standard Application Dilution Rates / Mixing Rates:
- 0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions
- 0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use
- 1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown
- 1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer.
* See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a sprayer like the Chapin premier 1 gallon sprayer.
Use in the Following Areas:
Indoors and outdoors on residential, institutional, public, commercial, and industrial buildings, greenhouses, animal confinement facilities/livestock premises, kennels, food handling establishments, and lawns, ornamentals, parks, recreational areas and athletic fields; trees, shrubs, foliage plants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, and flowers in greenhouses, interiorscapes, including hotels, shopping malls, office buildings, etc., and outdoor plantscapes, such as around residential dwellings, parks, institutional buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields and home lawns (Non-bearing crops are perennial crops that will not produce a harvestable raw agricultural commodity during the season of application); feed and food handling establishments, animal confinement facilities, kennels, confined animal feeding operations, livestock premises, and in/around/under structures
Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.
Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.
- Do not use as a space spray.
- Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.
- Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days.
Talstar P may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.
Bedbug Control - Thorough application should be made to crack and crevices where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes bed frames, boxsprings, inside empty dressers and clothes closets and carpet edges, high and low wall moldings and wallpaper edges. Do not use this product on bed linens, pillows, mattresses or clothes. Remove all clothes and other articles from dressers or clothes closets before application. Allow all treated areas to thoroughly dry before use. Not recommended for use as sole protection against bedbugs. If evidence of bedbugs is found in/on mattresses, use products approved for this use.
General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 or 1 oz. of Talstar P in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Talstar P once every 3 months.
- Repeat applications should be limited to no more than once per seven days when using 0.33 oz./gal. of water. For the high use rate of 1.0 oz. per gallon of water, do not apply more than once every four weeks.
Mosquitos - In addition to the treatment around the foundation of the home as mentioned above, spray Talstar P on the underside of leaves on the lower-hanging branches of trees around the backyard or area where mosquitoes are a problem. You can also spray the underside of leaves on shrubs and ornamentals. Do not apply when wind speed exceeds 10 MPH.
Higher application volumes may be used to obtain the desired coverage of dense vegetation or landscaping materials.
Bagworms – Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. Apply when larvae begin to hatch and spray larvae directly. Applications when larvae are young will be most effective.
Chinch bugs – Use 0.5 to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Chinch Bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Irrigation of the grass area before treatment will optimize the penetration of the insecticide to the area where the chinch bugs are located. Use higher volume applications if the thatch layer is excessive or if a relatively long mowing height is being maintained. Chinch Bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher application rates (Up to 1 fluid oz. per 1000 square feet) may be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the middle of the summer.
Lawn applications – A hose end sprayer like the Chapin hose end sprayer may be used to apply Talstar P for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.
Stink Bugs – Talstar P has an expanded label for treatment of Stink Bugs indoors, outdoors, on lawns, and on ornamental plants. Use 0.33 to 1.0 oz/gal. of water and treat around door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry, once a month August-November.
Termite Applications- Talstar P may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Talstar P to control subterranean termites.

- Store out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Concentrate should be viable for 3-5 years. If separation occurs, shake well before using.

Works better than Diazinon
By Jay on 09/18/2008
I bought a quart of Talstar One two years ago. It works better than I would've imagined. I spray around the perimeter of house about 2-3 times a year and it keeps any and all pests away. I used Diazinon before but those results pale in comparison to Talstar One. I hope you have this product for a long time to come.

By Linda in Prescott, AZ on 04/30/2010
We live in the high desert of Northern AZ where there are scorpions, millipedes and lots of other nasty insects. Within a matter of weeks after moving into our new house the scorpions started showing up inside the house. We have several dogs and cats and I was concerned for their safety as well as our own. A friend recommended a professional pest control company and things improved dramatically after the first treatment. We signed up for regular treatment which was every 3 months. Unfortunately, it was to their schedule which seemed to constantly change and it became extremely inconvenient for us. They would even want to spray while it was raining. The last time the pest control guy was here my husband asked what they used and the guy was more than willing to tell him that it was Talstar P. After my husband told me the name I Googled it and found DoMyOwnPestControl. We then decided to do our own pest control and not be at the mercy of someone elses schedule. It's very easy, effective and, needless to say, costs a LOT less money - one quart lasted us almost two years and cost about the same as one of the pest control company's visits. More importantly we spray at the optimum time and under the best weather conditions.

Does not break down quickly in sunlight
By William on 07/02/2008
Talstar P is an excellent product because it is so persistent and does not break down. Most phosphor based products break down the moment they are expose to sunlight. This one will not. We have an open ditch behind our property that used to be the home to millions of mosquitoes - not anymore. I spray about 200 ft of the ditch in either direction twice a year, using a total of perhaps 30 oz of Talstar a year, and we have been mosquito free for three years.

Read the directions, spray it yourself & save big!
By Karen in Georgia on 07/23/2009
It seems our entire street lives on an ant hill, because we could not keep those varmints out for long. I was paying $75 per quarter for pest control in our house and outside as well. I read the directions, applied a band around the outside perimeter, windows and doorways of our home and I have not seen one bug, ant, or anything for the past 2 months. We have had rainy and exceptionally dry weather, too. I highly recommend Talstar One.

Best stuff I have ever used
By Garry in Rialto, California on 05/11/2013
OK so here it goes. Mix it according to directions or just a TADD stronger. Then Spray around the outside of the building with a 2 foot spray pattern from the walls. Make sure that all pet foods and water is not in the spray pattern area. I also sprayed all along my fence/block wall line from my neighbors property just in case that they had more bugs then I had. I also sprayed inside the house. When I did this I had removed all contents from every cabinet and drawer. Then I took out the last drawers and sprayed there. Make sure that you wash all dishes just in case I had contaminated the area. Make sure that you have now food in these areas and this includes pet foods. Now I want you to understand that you are doing this because you a BUG PROBLEM. Do not skimpy out on any of the steps. The next thing is to respray about every two weeks after tat for a month total. The reason for this is because you will kill the bugs running around but you wont kill all of the bugs that are in casing / eggs. Some bugs lay them very often and the spray may or will not penetrate them on contact until the bug has hatched from what ever they are encased in. The reason you need to do this that often is because of the mating cycles of these little critters. I have to tell you this is the best stuff I have ever used. When I do spray I usually have to vacuum up and sweep up outside all of the dead varmints that are laying around. It is truly amazing. Good luck and have fun. By the way you are not supposed to do t his but the average exterminator charges are quit high so you can save a lot of money doing this yourself and probably do a lot better job. If you do your friends places it is illegal to charge them unless you are licensed HINT HINT:::::: The bug man I had come to my home was 80 dollars per month and he came out twice a month for only a short time. This can be expensive so you do the math and see what you can save and how much money you can make. Did I SAY THAT OOPS. One more thing. I am going to buy a gallon the next time just in case we get some government regulation that say you can no longer buy this on the net or even at all. At least this will keep me supplied for a very long time. Good luck

Talstar kills Stink Bugs!
By Wally in Hedgesville, WV on 09/25/2010
For the past several years my family and I were bombarded by stick bugs. Our whole house was covered twice a year, spring and late summer to early fall. They were in our house, in our garage, everywhere. A friend of mine who owns a lawn care business told me about Talstar P. I managed to buy 2 qts. at a local farmers feed mill. I mixed 3/4 of an oz. to 1 gal. of water in a hand sprayer. After mixing and using 5 gal., I had my whole house and garage and even my yard sprayed by 1 pm. By 5 pm, I noticed hundreds of stick bugs laying on our back porch and front deck and only a hand full still on the side of our home. Can"t wait to see them all dead.

Bug free yard :-)
By Wilfredo in Fort Lauderdale FLORIDA on 06/16/2010
We have been living in this house for 13+ years and it's been virtually impossible to enjoy our backyard due to mosquitos. Throughout the years we tried several products claiming effectiveness against these blood suckers. They were all a waste of time and $$$. After applying Talstar P we noticed instant relief of Mosquitos with no harsh chemical odors/smell. It been three weeks (rain storms daily) since our first application and this product is as effective as day one.

Excellent pricing, fast FREE delivery, and an 800 number that was answered quickly and answered my questions. This same product was almost 2x the price at my local DIY pest control store. A very easy web site to navigate and find my product (Talstar P). Also great email notifications on the progress of my order.

We have had problems with little black ants invading our home for the last couple years. I've tried pretty much everything from the hardware store but that stuff barely made a dent. I purchased Talstar P a few weeks ago. I only wish I had looked into this two years ago. Within 1 day, there was about a 90% reduction in the ants. I sprayed 5 days ago and have not seen a single ant in the last couple days. Usually the ants were at their worst right after a strong rain. Well, it rained very hard yesterday, for the first time, we didn't see a single ant. I'm sold on this stuff!

Ask our product experts...
Ask a Question
QWhat is the correct mixture of Talstar P for indoor and outdoor prevention.
The mixture would be for roaches, silverfish, and ants etc. We have tree roaches and have controlled them with a professional exterminator till now. We will use inside and outside.
AFor the initial application and in areas where pest populations are high you should use 1 oz of Talstar per gallon of water for indoor and outdoor use. For maintenance applications you can use 1/2 ounce of Talstar per gallon of water.
QWhat is the shelf life of Talstar P? How long does the unused portion of the pesticide retain it's strength and effectiveness after opening?
AThe manufacturer gives Talstar P a shelf life of 3 years as long as you keep the top on the bottle and you do not store it in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures.
QIs Talstar safe near dogs and cats?
ATalstar P is safe to use around animals as long as they are out of the area while you are spraying. They can return as soon as the area is dry. Talstar P is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and will not break down easily with rainfall.
QWhat are mixing instructions for Talstar P per gallon of water?
AIt depends on the pest you are treating for, but for the most part you would typically use 1 oz. per gallon of water. The bottle of Talstar P comes with a convenient measuring device on the bottle for easy use.
QWhich product is more recommended for termites Talstar P or Termidor SC?
My home was originally treated with Talstar 72 from the builder 5 years ago.
ATermidor SC is the #1 termite product on the market. When used as an in-ground barrier treatment, Termidor SC will protect your home or business for over 10 years. Termidor SC is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. Termidor SC controls all types of termites including subterranean, formosan, and drywood termites. Talstar P lasts for about 5 years in the ground and works as a repellent, killing only those insects that come into contact with the treated area.

QI need the strongest, easiest, most effective broad-spectrum insecticide for my yard.
suburban, have dog. dallas Texas, must include fleas, chiggers, spiders, roaches, big ass tree roaches, beatles. if it crawls i want it gone. prefer something that i can spray on with a water hose to yard and outsise of home. that lasts. also need a strong weed killer to kill all tx weeds, but expecially these burr weeds ( look like clover but put out these non spikey, round burrs.) grass not an issue, plan to reseed. weeds cover 75% of yard anyway. a few trees i dont want hurt.
A Talstar P would be your best general insecticide for your yard. It is labeled for just about any insect you could have a problem with including ants, roaches, beetles, mosquitoes, and many others. Talstar P can be used in a hose end sprayer but can be a little thick so may need a touch of water added to thin it a bit. If you are looking to get rid of the weeds and grass so you can reseed you should use a glyphosate product such as Glyphosel Pro. This is a non-selective herbicide that will kill the weeds and anything other foliage it is sprayed on. You can reseed after 14 days. Do not directly spray the trees or allow drift to get on the trees to avoid damage.

QWhat does the term "space spray" mean?
I bought Talstar P and read not to use as a space spray. I had fleas in my home and I sprayed all the floors in my home. Is space spraying an outdoor term or does it mean not to spray every space in your home?
ASpace spray refers to spraying the product into the air instead of directing the product onto a surface. The way you applied Talstar is called a broadcast spray and it is also prohibited by the Talstar P product label for indoor applications. Talstar P should only be used as a crack and crevice spray or spot spray (spot spaying means to make an application to an area that is less than 2 ft x 2 ft). We do carry products that are specifically formulated for fleas on indoor floors. Ultracide and Precor 2000 are always top choices for this type of application. If you prefer to use concentrates Onslaught and Permethrin SFR 36.8% are both labeled to be used indoors as a broadcast spray for flea infestations. We do recommend you add an insect growth regulator such as Precor IGR or Archer IGR to Onslaught or Permethrin SFR to help stop the breeding cycle of fleas while you are trying to eliminate the infestation. An IGR is already included in the aerosol products.

QWhy would you recommend Termidor Sc over Talstar P if they are both supposed to have a long residual?
You mention in one of the Q&A that you recommend Termidor over Talstar, but in the product description it says:Talstar One is formulated for long-lasting effectiveness. Is that the manufacturer description?
AWe make product recommendations based on the type of of area that is being sprayed and also the type of pest that needs to be eliminated. We would need more specific information to be able to tell you why we made the recommendation that we made in that Q&A. We can tell you that for termites and ants in outdoor situations on or close to a structure we almost always recommend Termidor. Termidor has a different active ingredient than Talstar and this active ingredient allows the ants or termites to pick the product up on their bodies and move it back to the nest and spread it to the other insects. Talstar on the other hand will only kill the insects that come into direct contact with treated surfaces. Also Termidor will last about twice as long as Talstar when used as a termite barrier in a trenching treatment. Please let us know if you have more questions about Talstar vs Termidor

QHow should I use Talstar P to kill bedbugs?
I have bedbugs in my bedroom so I need to know how much product to apply and how often to kill all of them.
ATalstar P should be used at the highest concentration of 1 oz of Talstar per gallon of water for bedbug treatments. According to the product label: "Thorough application should be made to crack and crevices where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes bed frames, box springs, inside empty dressers and clothes closets and carpet edges, high and low wall moldings and wallpaper edges. Do not use this product on bed linens, pillows, mattresses or clothes. Remove all clothes and other articles from dressers or clothes closets before application. Allow all treated areas to thoroughly dry before use. Not recommended for use as sole protection against bedbugs. If evidence of bedbugs is found in/on mattresses, use products approved for this use." As you can see the Talstar P manufacturers do not recommend that you use Talstar P by itself to get rid of bedbugs. QWill Talstar kill wood/carpenter bees?
We have carpenter bees that are becoming very destructive to our house, basically the fir wood.
AYes. Talstar is labeled for and will help eliminate bees. To use Talstar P for carpenter bee control you should mix 1 oz of Talstar per 1 gallon of water and spray the areas where you have noticed activity such as the eaves, fascia boards, mouldings, overhangs, or siding. You should reapply the Talstar P once a month through the warm season for best results. Please note that Talstar P will not offer an instant knockdown of insects, it will take several minutes to a few hours for them to die after they come into contact with treated areas. We also recommend dusting the carpenter bee holes with a dust such as Tempo Dust to help kill any larva inside. Do not plug the holes for at least 30 days after dusting to prevent the developing larva from drilling a new whole to exit.
QWhat can I use to get rid of Kudzu bugs in GA?
I have little brown bugs all over my porch rails, side of house, windows, etc. There were a few last year, but this past weekend, I noticed many, many more. What is best to keep them away?
A"Kudzu" bugs are a type of stink bug that is an invasive species in the south and has really started to grow as a nuisance in recent years. While there isn't really a repellent product to keep them away from your home you can use a product like Talstar P to kill the bugs that land on treated surfaces. Talstar P can be diluted at a rate of 1 oz of product per gallon of water and applied using a hand pump sprayer on the areas that you mentioned (do not spray on top of porch railings where people place there hands frequently)
QWhat is the shelf life of Talstar P?
ATalstar P should be used within 3 years of the date of purchase. It is important to keep the product out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
QWill Talstar P kill stink bugs? How does it work? Do I directly spray it on the stink bugs or spray an area?
ATalstar P will kill stinkbugs. You should dilute one ounce of Talstar P per gallon of water. You will use a hand pump sprayer to apply the solution on all door frames, window frames, areas where utilities (cables, pipes, wires) enter into the structure, a band of soil 6 to 10 feet adjacent to the structure, also to a height of 2 to 3 feet on the foundation where pests may be active or may find entrance. As the stink bugs crawl over the treated area, they will receive a lethal does of the insecticide and usually die within a few hours. You should treat every month starting in August and ending in November for best results.
QUsing Talstar to get rid of ants in Kitchen
I can't get rid of ants in the kitchen by the sink. They are tiny fast moving, but I keep spraying Talstar there and behind the oven. I don't know where they are coming from. Everything else has been fine. Can you tell me what to do?
ATalstar is great for 99% of bugs that might enter your home, but ants are especially difficult to get rid of. This is because an ant colony can reproduce new ants almost faster than you can kill them. Talstar will only kill the ants it touches. The key though to ant removal is eliminating the nest. Most of the time you have no idea where the nest is. So, you have to use a product that will not kill the ants right away so they will take it back to the colony and spread it around, eliminating the source. This is where ant baits come in. Ant baits are a food source that the ants in your kitchen will eat and take back to the colony. It will not kill them right away. This is the only true way to eliminate your ant problem is to kill them at the source. If you do not kill the colony, you will continue to battle them all summer. One important note is you need to stop spraying the Talstar until you get some ant bait, and do not spray until after your ants are gone. If you continue to spray the Talstar, the ants will die before they get back to the colony with the bait. Our most popular ant elimination product is our complete ant kit. It comes with an ant granular bait to apply outside around the house, and a gel bait to apply in your kitchen. It has a very high success rate and is our most popular ant kit.
