How Talstar Pro (Talstar One) Works
Talstar P is a liquid concentrate insecticide which contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Talstar P does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Talstar P is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Talstar P will be most effective as a barrier with a thorough application. Talstar P residual can last up to 3 months.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Bifenthrin 7.9%
Talstar P (Talstar One) Application Instructions
Inside, outside, and around the perimeter of structures, food handling areas, lawns, turf and ornamental trees and shrubs. NOT for use on food and vegetable gardens. Talstar is best applied with a sprayer. Always read the label completely before use.
1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.
1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.
¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.
1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-256 gallons of finished solution or covers 128,000 to 256,000 square feet for broadcast application.
Standard Application Dilution Rates / Mixing Rates for Talstar P:
- 0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions
- 0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use
- 1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown
- 1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer.
*See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a sprayer like the Chapin premier 1 gallon sprayer.
Talstar P is for use in the following areas:
Indoors and outdoors on residential, institutional, public, commercial, and industrial buildings, greenhouses, animal confinement facilities/livestock premises, kennels, food handling establishments, and lawns, ornamentals, parks, recreational areas and athletic fields; trees, shrubs, foliage plants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, and flowers in greenhouses, interiorscapes, including hotels, shopping malls, office buildings, etc., and outdoor plantscapes, such as around residential dwellings, parks, institutional buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields and home lawns (Non-bearing crops are perennial crops that will not produce a harvestable raw agricultural commodity during the season of application); feed and food handling establishments, animal confinement facilities, kennels, confined animal feeding operations, livestock premises, and in/around/under structures
Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.
Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.
*Do not use as a space spray.
*Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.
*Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days.
Talstar P may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.
For bedbug control - Thorough application should be made to crack and crevices where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes bed frames, boxsprings, inside empty dressers and clothes closets and carpet edges, high and low wall moldings and wallpaper edges. Do not use this product on bed linens, pillows, mattresses or clothes. Remove all clothes and other articles from dressers or clothes closets before application. Allow all treated areas to thoroughly dry before use. Not recommended for use as sole protection against bedbugs. If evidence of bedbugs is found in/on mattresses, use products approved for this use.
General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 or 1 oz. of Talstar P in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Talstar P once every 3 months.
*Repeat applications should be limited to no more than once per seven days when using 0.33 oz./gal. of water. For the high use rate of 1.0 oz. per gallon of water, do not apply more than once every four weeks.
Mosquitos - In addition to the treatment around the foundation of the home as mentioned above, spray Talstar P on the underside of leaves on the lower-hanging branches of trees around the backyard or area where mosquitoes are a problem. You can also spray the underside of leaves on shrubs and ornamentals. Do not apply when wind speed exceeds 10 MPH.
Higher application volumes may be used to obtain the desired coverage of dense vegetation or landscaping materials.
Bagworms – Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. Apply when larvae begin to hatch and spray larvae directly. Applications when larvae are young will be most effective.
Chinch bugs – Use 0.5 to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Chinch Bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Irrigation of the grass area before treatment will optimize the penetration of the insecticide to the area where the chinch bugs are located. Use higher volume applications if the thatch layer is excessive or if a relatively long mowing height is being maintained. Chinch Bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher application rates (Up to 1 fluid oz. per 1000 square feet) may be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the middle of the summer.
Lawn applications – A hose end sprayer like the Chapin hose end sprayer may be used to apply Talstar P for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.
Stink Bugs – Talstar P has an expanded label for treatment of Stink Bugs indoors, outdoors, on lawns, and on ornamental plants. Use 0.33 to 1.0 oz/gal. of water and treat around door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry, once a month August-November.
Termite Applications- Talstar P may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Talstar P to control subterranean termites.

Works better than Diazinon
By Jay on September 18, 2008
I bought a quart of Talstar One two years ago. It works better than I would've imagined. I spray around the perimeter of house about 2-3 times a year and it keeps any and all pests away. I used Diazinon before but those results pale in comparison to Talstar One. I hope you have this product for a long time to come.

Does not break down quickly in sunlight
By William on July 2, 2008
Talstar P is an excellent product because it is so persistent and does not break down. Most phosphor based products break down the moment they are expose to sunlight. This one will not. We have an open ditch behind our property that used to be the home to millions of mosquitoes - not anymore. I spray about 200 ft of the ditch in either direction twice a year, using a total of perhaps 30 oz of Talstar a year, and we have been mosquito free for three years.

By Linda in Prescott, AZ on April 30, 2010
We live in the high desert of Northern AZ where there are scorpions, millipedes and lots of other nasty insects. Within a matter of weeks after moving into our new house the scorpions started showing up inside the house. We have several dogs and cats and I was concerned for their safety as well as our own. A friend recommended a professional pest control company and things improved dramatically after the first treatment. We signed up for regular treatment which was every 3 months. Unfortunately, it was to their schedule which seemed to constantly change and it became extremely inconvenient for us. They would even want to spray while it was raining. The last time the pest control guy was here my husband asked what they used and the guy was more than willing to tell him that it was Talstar P. After my husband told me the name I Googled it and found DoMyOwnPestControl. We then decided to do our own pest control and not be at the mercy of someone elses schedule. It's very easy, effective and, needless to say, costs a LOT less money - one quart lasted us almost two years and cost about the same as one of the pest control company's visits. More importantly we spray at the optimum time and under the best weather conditions.

Read the directions, spray it yourself & save big!
By Karen in Georgia on July 23, 2009
It seems our entire street lives on an ant hill, because we could not keep those varmints out for long. I was paying $75 per quarter for pest control in our house and outside as well. I read the directions, applied a band around the outside perimeter, windows and doorways of our home and I have not seen one bug, ant, or anything for the past 2 months. We have had rainy and exceptionally dry weather, too. I highly recommend Talstar One.

Works pretty good...pest you are trying to control seem to get immune to it pretty fast (try to use another product temprid or another multi-use spray every other time)..Its affordable but if you have any left over after a spray job you don't want to store in your sprayer even if you have a job the next day, or it will start to coagulate and plug stuff up. or even if you use it all clean sprayer daily will be worth it in the long run.

Perfect for around the foundation
By Keith in IL on May 13, 2015
This is the same stuff the people with an O use. It works as expected. A little is all that is needed. I bought two cans for my own use and it may last me 10 years for my 2 story 4 bedroom.
By Don in Coalmont, TN on May 12, 2015
Product came quickly and in good condition. I used the granules outside and plan to use this liquid for spot control outside and indoors if needed. It may be too early to judge its efficacy but so far it seems effective, and the price was very attractive. I recommend it.

NO MORE MOSQUITOS!
By Dave in Peoria, AZ on April 23, 2015
We had a mosquito problem. The mosquitoes in the Phoenix area are small and fast. We could not go outside without putting on repellant or using mosquito coils. I had tried the big box stores products but they were only slightly effective and were expensive in relation to their coverage and frequent reapplication became a pain in the a** due to the low coverage area per tank. After using this product at the highest recommended dilution rate I am happy to report that within 12 hours we had no mosquitoes! Plus no grasshoppers, crickets or ground spiders! It has been 10 days since spraying all patio surfaces, walls and foundation (up 2 -3 feet), eaves, yard, potted plants and their soil (not vegetable garden), trees and small palms. You do not have to have complete coverage, just most areas as the insects will eventually come in contact with a treated area. It has been 10 days since application and have not had to apply repellant or light coils since. I can now go outside without fear of being attacked. I have not been bitten once and am outdoors for hours every day. We do still see bugs flying around the yard lights at night but I believe they are attracted from adjacent properties and will eventually land on the treated areas and die. Additionally, some of our potted plants have perked up due to the killing of the subterranean insects that were feeding on them. I am very happy with this product and have recommended it to friends who are paying $80 per month to pest control companies. I will have to post a followup as to the residual effects of this product.

June 4, 2010 James asked:
QWhat is the correct mixture of Talstar P for indoor and outdoor prevention.
The mixture would be for roaches, silverfish, and ants etc. We have tree roaches and have controlled them with a professional exterminator till now. We will use inside and outside.
AFor the initial application and in areas where pest populations are high you should use 1 oz of Talstar per gallon of water for indoor and outdoor use. For maintenance applications you can use 1/2 ounce of Talstar per gallon of water.
March 15, 2011 Lucinda asked:
QWhat is the shelf life of Talstar P? How long does the unused portion of the pesticide retain it's strength and effectiveness after opening?
AThe manufacturer gives Talstar P a shelf life of 3 years as long as you keep the top on the bottle and you do not store it in direct sunlight or in extreme temperatures.
October 15, 2010 John asked:
QIs Talstar safe near dogs and cats?
ATalstar P is safe to use around animals as long as they are out of the area while you are spraying. They can return as soon as the area is dry. Talstar P is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and will not break down easily with rainfall.
July 2, 2011 Harold asked:
QWhat are mixing instructions for Talstar P per gallon of water?
AIt depends on the pest you are treating for, but for the most part you would typically use 1 oz. per gallon of water. The bottle of Talstar P comes with a convenient measuring device on the bottle for easy use.
September 2, 2010 Peter asked:
QWhich product is more recommended for termites Talstar P or Termidor SC?
My home was originally treated with Talstar 72 from the builder 5 years ago.
ATermidor SC is the #1 termite product on the market. When used as an in-ground barrier treatment, Termidor SC will protect your home or business for over 10 years. Termidor SC is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. Termidor SC controls all types of termites including subterranean, formosan, and drywood termites. Talstar P lasts for about 5 years in the ground and works as a repellent, killing only those insects that come into contact with the treated area.

Jen from Md asked:
QHow long does the Talstar P last in storage?
if i bought it 3 years ago and kept it inside, will it still be good?
A The standar shelf life if stored properly is 3-5 years so it should certainly still be good for you to use.
May 17, 2015 Tim asked:
QWhen using a mist blower, how far into a treeline should we treat for mosquitos?
Our back yard (1/4 acre) is surrounded by dense woods with substantial underbrush on three sides and we're wondering how far into the woods we'd need to blow a misting pesticide like Telstar P into the cover to provide defense against biting black flies and mosquitos. Of course, this would be done in conjunction to the spraying of shrubs and patio areas in the main part of the yard. Additionally, where we don't spend nearly as much time in the front yard (1/4 acre, open to a street) as the back, is it worth spraying the shrubs and trees in that area as vigorously as the backyard?
A There is no definite "coverage area" for mosquitoes because they are flying insects. However, keep in mind that the better the coverage, the better the results. For best results we would recommend treating as far back into the woods as possible and also ask neighbors about the possibility of treating their property. The larger the treated zone the more impact on the mosquito population. You want to treat all bushes, shrubs, and low lying tree branches and be sure to get the undersides of the leaves which is where those pesky mosquitoes like to hide during the day.

QCan I sleep in my home after I've sprayed Talstar P?
I found termites in my home tonight and need to spray Talstar. Can I sleep in my home after I've sprayed it? Or do I need to let it air out over night?
A Talstar P can be applied for above ground termites but will take a couple of hours to dry and you should leave the home after treatment until the surfaces are dry. You can sleep in the home afterwards. Talstar will not be an instant kill. Please contact us for information on termite treatments at 866-581-7378 M-F 9-5PM EST. Any household cleaning product will kill the ones that you see right now without you having to worry or leave the home this late at night.

Ken from Odessa, Texas asked:
QPest Control-Products Outside of House
I want to put some pest control outside around the house, in the brick crevices etc... An exterminator company came to the house last week offering a sale of $120 every 2 months to preventative control, for spiders, mice, whatever other bugs are outside. I just built my house which is outside of town in a subdivision, but across the street we have open, fields etc... I have purchased from this website before, and I figured I would give it a shot at doing it myself before paying those rates. What product would you recommend?
A Our most popular general use product is called Talstar. It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets. It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water in a one gallon hand pump sprayer. It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments. It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests. Talstar is also available in a granule formula called Talstar PL if you prefer to use granules.

Jim from United States asked:
QCan I mix Talstar P with Image in a single application?
A Talstar P can be mixed with Image, if you do the tank mix test. Any tank mixture which has not been previously tested should be prepared on a small scale (pint or quart jar), using the proper proportions of pesticides and water to ensure the physical compatibility of the mixture. The following procedure is recommended for preparation of a new tank mix, unless specified otherwise in label directions: (1) Add wettable powders to tank water, (2) Agitate, (3) Add liquids and flowables, (4) Agitate, (5) Add emulsifiable concentrates, and (6) Agitate. If a mixture is found to be incompatible following this the volume of water. Note: If the tank-mixture is found to be compatible after increasing the amount of water, then the sprayer will need to be recalibrated for a higher volume application. Do not allow the mixture to stand over night.

Brian from Grandy Nc asked:
QWill Talstar P kill water bugs?
A Talstar P will kill water bugs, roaches, and most common crawling and flying insects that come into contact with the direct spray or the residual, however you should use additional methods of control for roaches, such as eliminating food and water sources and exclusion. See our Roach Control Guide for more information about how to Prevent and Treat these insects.
