Talstar P (Talstar One)

Talstar P (also known as Talstar, Talstar One or Talstar Professional) Multi-Insecticide with bifenthrin is one of the most trusted and widely-used insecticides by pest control professionals today, and now available to you for DIY pest control.

The name Talstar P/Talstar One means one professional solution for everything: Talstar insecticide kills over 75 insect pests and can be used for indoor pest control, outdoor pest control, food handling areas, turf and ornamental treatments, in the yard as a yard spray to treat fleas or other yard pests, and even for termite control!

Talstar has a long residual, so it keeps on killing pests for over three months after you've sprayed it. Plus, Talstar One is odorless, dries clear, leaves no stains, is non-irritating to the skin, and won't break down easily with rainfall. For termites, ants, mosquitoes, roaches, beetles, spiders, and everything in-between, Talstar insecticide is simply fantastic. 1 Qt. concentrate yields 32-96 finished gallons. Application of Talstar P requires a sprayer.

How Talstar P (Talstar One) Works

Talstar P is a liquid concentrate insecticide which contains bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids work by disrupting an insect's nervous system causing a weakened state followed by death. Talstar P does not provide an instant knockdown of pests, rather, pests pick up the residual active ingredient by contact. Talstar P is a repellent insecticide since it acts quickly enough that social insects such as ants cannot create a pheromone trail. This means that Talstar P will be most effective as a barrier with a thorough application. Talstar P residual can last up to 3 months.

Talstar P (Talstar One) Application Instructions

Inside, outside, and around the perimeter of structures, food handling areas, lawns, turf and ornamental trees and shrubs. NOT for use on food and vegetable gardens.  Talstar is best applied with a sprayer. Always read the label completely before use!

Yield-

1 pint (16 oz.) concentrate yields 16-32 gallons of finished solution.

1 quart (32 oz.) concentrate yields 32-96 gallons of finished solution.

¾ gallon (96 oz.) concentrate yields 96-192 gallons of finished solution.

1 gallon (128 oz.) concentrate yields 128-256 gallons of finished solution or covers 128,000 to 256,000 square feet for broadcast application.

Standard Application Dilution Rates / Mixing Rates for Talstar P:

0.33 oz./gallon of water – 0.02% - prevention, low level infestions

0.5 oz./gallon of water – 0.031% – general indoor or outdoor use

1.0 oz./gallon of water - 0.06% - severe infestations, less frequent treatments, longer residual, quicker knockdown

1 gallon of finished solution should cover 1,000 square feet when using a hand pump sprayer.

*See the video above for general use mixing and application instruction using a sprayer like the Chapin premier 1 gallon sprayer.

Talstar P is for use in the following areas:

Indoors and outdoors on residential, institutional, public, commercial, and industrial buildings, greenhouses, animal confinement facilities/livestock premises, kennels, food handling establishments, and lawns, ornamentals, parks, recreational areas and athletic fields; trees, shrubs, foliage plants, non-bearing fruit and nut trees, and flowers in greenhouses, interiorscapes, including hotels, shopping malls, office buildings, etc., and outdoor plantscapes, such as around residential dwellings, parks, institutional buildings, recreational areas, athletic fields and home lawns (Non-bearing crops are perennial crops that will not produce a harvestable raw agricultural commodity during the season of application); feed and food handling establishments, animal confinement facilities, kennels, confined animal feeding operations, livestock premises, and in/around/under structures

Indoors-

Use 0.33 to 1 fluid oz. per gallon of water for residual pest control in buildings and structures and on modes of transport. Apply either as a crack and crevice, pinstream, spot, coarse, low pressure spray (25 psi or less) or with a paint brush.

Apply as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refrigerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.

*Do not use as a space spray.

*Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices.

*Limit repeat application to no more than once per seven days.

Talstar P may be converted to a foam for residual treatment of voids or as a spot spray when visual marking of application is desired.

For bedbug control - Thorough application should be made to crack and crevices where evidence of bed bugs occurs. This includes bed frames, boxsprings, inside empty dressers and clothes closets and carpet edges, high and low wall moldings and wallpaper edges. Do not use this product on bed linens, pillows, mattresses or clothes. Remove all clothes and other articles from dressers or clothes closets before application. Allow all treated areas to thoroughly dry before use. Not recommended for use as sole protection against bedbugs. If evidence of bedbugs is found in/on mattresses, use products approved for this use.

Outdoors-

General application for crawling pests - Mix 0.5 or 1 oz. of Talstar P in one gallon of water and apply to the outside foundation of the home, approx. 3 feet up the side of the house and 2 feet out from the house. Also spray entry points into the home such as around windows, pipes, doorways, etc. For general preventative treatment, apply Talstar P once every 3 months.

*Repeat applications should be limited to no more than once per seven days when using 0.33 oz./gal. of water. For the high use rate of 1.0 oz. per gallon of water, do not apply more than once every four weeks.

Mosquitos - In addition to the treatment around the foundation of the home as mentioned above, spray Talstar P on the underside of leaves on the lower-hanging branches of trees around the backyard or area where mosquitoes are a problem.  You can also spray the underside of leaves on shrubs and ornamentals. Do not apply when wind speed exceeds 10 MPH.

Higher application volumes may be used to obtain the desired coverage of dense vegetation or landscaping materials.

Bagworms – Use 0.125 to 0.25 oz. per 1,000 square feet (or 5.4 - 10.8 oz. per 100 gal.). Apply as a full coverage foliar spray. Use of a Chapin Slide Pump Sprayer will help reach higher into trees. Apply when larvae begin to hatch and spray larvae directly. Applications when larvae are young will be most effective.

Chinch bugs – Use 0.5 to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Chinch Bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Irrigation of the grass area before treatment will optimize the penetration of the insecticide to the area where the chinch bugs are located. Use higher volume applications if the thatch layer is excessive or if a relatively long mowing height is being maintained. Chinch Bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher application rates (Up to 1 fluid oz. per 1000 square feet) may be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the middle of the summer.

Lawn applications – A hose end sprayer like the Chapin hose end sprayer may be used to apply Talstar P for lawn pests. Use up to 1.0 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Higher volume applications may be more effective with some pests, so you may want to calibrate the sprayer to a lower rate (for example, 0.25 oz/gal.) and use more water to cover a 1,000 square foot area.

Stink Bugs – Talstar P has an expanded label for treatment of Stink Bugs indoors, outdoors, on lawns, and on ornamental plants. Use 0.33 to 1.0 oz/gal. of water and treat around door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry, once a month August-November.

Termite Applications- Talstar P may be used for pre-construction or post-construction prevention of subterranean termites. Use 1.0 oz/gal. of water (0.06% solution) for most termite applications. For preconstruction horizontal barriers (such as under a concrete slab), use 1 gallon of solution per 10 square feet. For perimeter barrier treatments, use 4 gallons of solution per 10 linear feet. See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment, for further instructions on perimeter termite treatments. See product label for full instructions on using Talstar P to control subterranean termites.

5 of 5 Stars  Works better than Diazinon
By Jay on September 18, 2008

I bought a quart of Talstar One two years ago. It works better than I would've imagined. I spray around the perimeter of house about 2-3 times a year and it keeps any and all pests away. I used Diazinon before but those results pale in comparison to Talstar One. I hope you have this product for a long time to come.

5 of 5 Stars  Does not break down quickly in sunlight
By William on July 2, 2008

Talstar P is an excellent product because it is so persistent and does not break down. Most phosphor based products break down the moment they are expose to sunlight. This one will not. We have an open ditch behind our property that used to be the home to millions of mosquitoes - not anymore. I spray about 200 ft of the ditch in either direction twice a year, using a total of perhaps 30 oz of Talstar a year, and we have been mosquito free for three years.

5 of 5 Stars  Great Stuff
By Linda on April 30, 2010

We live in the high desert of Northern AZ where there are scorpions, millipedes and lots of other nasty insects. Within a matter of weeks after moving into our new house the scorpions started showing up inside the house. We have several dogs and cats and I was concerned for their safety as well as our own. A friend recommended a professional pest control company and things improved dramatically after the first treatment. We signed up for regular treatment which was every 3 months. Unfortunately, it was to their schedule which seemed to constantly change and it became extremely inconvenient for us. They would even want to spray while it was raining. The last time the pest control guy was here my husband asked what they used and the guy was more than willing to tell him that it was Talstar P. After my husband told me the name I Googled it and found DoMyOwnPestControl. We then decided to do our own pest control and not be at the mercy of someone elses schedule. It's very easy, effective and, needless to say, costs a LOT less money - one quart lasted us almost two years and cost about the same as one of the pest control company's visits. More importantly we spray at the optimum time and under the best weather conditions.

5 of 5 Stars  Read the directions, spray it yourself & save big!
By Karen on July 23, 2009

It seems our entire street lives on an ant hill, because we could not keep those varmints out for long. I was paying $75 per quarter for pest control in our house and outside as well. I read the directions, applied a band around the outside perimeter, windows and doorways of our home and I have not seen one bug, ant, or anything for the past 2 months. We have had rainy and exceptionally dry weather, too. I highly recommend Talstar One.

By Mike on September 9, 2014

Best pest control ever! It is extremely good mosquito control also. I sprayed a play area where I just had to prohibit the grand kids from going to. Zero mosquitoes after spraying. I also finally found something to get rid of spiders at the boathouse. Very good bargain for the price when you consider it's one ounce to a gallon of water. Me and quite a few friends are very impressed!

Termidor SC is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. QHow many gallons will you need to pre treat a 2000 sq ft with Talsar P?
I need pre treat 180 liner feet... 50 + 50+ 40+ 40+ 180 liner feet

A

Per the Talstar P product label for pre construction you would use 1 oz per gallon of water per 10 square feet, but Talstar is not the best product to use for this.  Termidor SC is the #1 termite product on the market. When used as an in-ground barrier treatment, Termidor SC will protect your home or business for over 10 years. Termidor SC is completely undetectable by termites and once termites touch it they contact, ingest and spread the termiticide until it eliminates the entire colony. May 27, 2014 Dana from China asked:

QIf I thoroughly washed all walls and surfaces following application, is the effectiveness of Talstar reduced?
My apartment was sprayed for cockroaches and I have a 5-year-old child that I didn't want exposed to insecticides. We waited 48 hours before returning after the spraying was done.

A Talstar P (Talstar One) is only labeled fro cracks and crevices indoors. If you washed those areas, Talstar P (Talstar One) would be less effective.

May 27, 2014 Dana from China asked:

QWhat is the proper indoor application for Talstar?
I live in China and hired a company that uses this product but it is difficult to communicate. Should Talstar be sprayed only in cracks and crevices or on walls? Can it be sprayed in food cupboards?

A

Talstar P should only be applied as a coarse, low pressure, crack and crevice or spot spray to areas where pests hide, such as baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, around water pipers, doors and windows, attics and eaves, behind and under refirgerators, cabinets, sinks, furnaces, stoves, the underside of shelves, drawers and similar areas.  It is not labeled to be used in cabinets.  You can find complete instructions on the product label here.

May 27, 2014 James from Charlotte asked:

QDoes Talstar P kill lightning bugs?

A Talstar P would kill lightning bugs if they were to land on the treated surface and crawl across it.  Insecticides are not really selective in what they kill and Talstar is labeled for over 75 different pests and will kill just about anything.

May 26, 2014 Ellen from Chatham, Mi asked:

QTalstar P Pet safe when dry? Morning dews?
In my region we frequently have heavy dews each morning. I have 2 dogs that go out early morning when the dew is still on the lawn to do their jobs. What about then? Is it harmful after application when it becomes wet over and over again? My Boxer tends to clean herself by licking her legs every day.

A Talstar P (Talstar One) is completely safe after it has dried. Your pets are safe to enter the area even if there is a dew. It will not cause the active ingredient to "reactivate" to a state that could be harmful. Also, after dilution there is only a large enough amount of active ingredient to kill small insects.

QHow do you get rid of Psocids?

May 23, 2014 James from Kenner, Louisiana asked:

QCan Talstar P and Termidor SC be mixed together for one application?
Also, I have a massive wasp problem around my lawn my house and my shed if I do this treatment will it kill them and keep them gone for a long period of time?

A Termidor SC is a non-repellent insecticide. This means the insects cannot tell that it is there and they will readily walk over treated areas. Termidor SC also has a delayed reaction time and a transfer effect which allows them time to get back to the colony and spread it around before they succumb to the effects of the product. Talstar P on the other hand is synthetic pyrethroid which many sensitive insects such as ants can detect. Insects may avoid the areas treated with Talstar and those that do cross over treated areas are the only ones that will be killed by the product. Talstar P does not have a transfer effect so it will not be transferred back to the colony. While the Termidor SC will not actually be deactivated by Talstar P, it will be much less effective if it is over-sprayed with Talstar P. You can spray Talstar P on your trees, bushes and lawn for mosquito control as long as you are not actually overlapping the areas where Termidor SC was applied.

Wasp Freeze is a product that will kill wasps if they are sprayed mid-air; however for long-term results, it works best on exposed nests that you can spray directly. If you see where they are entering, we recommned that you use a hand duster and apply a dust such as Tempo dust to the holes where the wasps are going in and out. The dust will help eliminate the wasps in the nest and any other wasps returning to the nest. Tempo dust will stay effective for several months as long as it is dry. After dusting in the void where the wasps have a built a nest you can try spraying the siding with a product such as Talstar P. You can spray once a month and any wasp that lands on treated areas will be eliminated within about 24 hours which should stop new wasps from being able to build a nest.

QI sprayed while my dog was in the area and I think directly inhaled Talstar What should I do?

A After Talstar P (Talstar One) has been diluted there is only a large enough active ingredient to harm small insects. With that being said, the label states to keep children and pets out of the area until the area has dried. Please contact your veternarian for further assistance. May 21, 2014 Jim from Sugarland,tx asked:

QIs Talstar P effective for fleas indoor and outdoors?

A Talstar P is labeled for the treatment of fleas outdoors only. It can only be applied to indoor cracks and crevices. Fleas will be on the open floor surfaces so it is important to apply a product such as Alpine Flea Insecticide with IGR to those surfaces indoors for eradication.
