Fire Ant Control
Research trials and field tests conducted by industry professionals have proven that with the addition of its powerful new active ingredient (Zeta-Cypermethrin), Talstar XTRA granular insecticide eliminates fire ant colonies within four hours or less. And in some cases, the fire ant populations were decimated in minutes, not hours. At these speeds, other products can’t even come close to the control of Talstar XTRA granular insecticide.
In addition to its breakthrough active ingredient, Talstar XTRA granular insecticide has been formulated with the same long-lasting residual of Talstar PL granular insecticide, for the highly dependable control professionals have come to expect. While fire ants and other pests can be gone in as little as minutes, the residual protection of Talstar XTRA granular insecticide is proven to remain effective for at least four months.
Talstar XTRA is approved for use on a wide variety of application sites, including residential lawns, institutional grounds, around buildings (public, commercial and industrial), parks, recreational areas and athletic fields.

This product worked great... at first. Applied it correctly and it was like a nuclear bomb went off - no ants, no crickets, no anything. However, a week or so went by and the ants were back. Why? Probably because of local control. I have lots of sandy spots and those don't take to the poison well? I find the liquid talstar HARDER to apply, but it works better in all conditions. For some reason the granular works well for yards and areas with no sand, etc. The granules are also hard to spread in landscape beds. Talstar as a whole is the BEST so maybe the answer is to buy granular for the grassy areas that are usually large and hard to cover with spray and then buy the spray for the landscaping beds and sandy spots in your lawn. Either way BE CAREFUL this stuff is so toxic that in minutes lizards, crickets, and ants start to flee their hiding places and you'll find them everywhere... dead! 5 stars for the liquid Talstar for sure, 4 stars for Talstar XTRA because despite the fact it has pretty ant(s) on the packaging it is not that great for ant(s) and may not work around planting beds, near sidewalks, and/or empty patches in lawns.

It really works
By Ralph on August 20, 2011
Product is on the expensive side but works great, I have not seen an ant on my lawn since it was applied 2 weeks ago, it also seems to have killed the chinch bugs as I am seeing a change of the bald spots on my lawn.

I put the granules out around the shrubbery and foundation of the house according to directions. I used the Talstar spray a month ago on the walls of the house. My roach problem has almost been elimintated. The Roaches I do see don't feel so good. Along with most other houses in Macon, last week we had our yearly infestation of redbugs crawling everywhere - except where that I had sprayed with Talstar. Good stuff and I like the lack of odor and ease of use. Make certain you have a good spreader.

We were getting ready to have a big birthday party for the Grandson and found too many fire ants to take the chance. We used the Talstar Xtra on the recomendation of a friend who is in the pest control business. We spread 50 pounds with the lawn spreader and didn't see one ANT at the party. Great product, Thanks.
We like it, solid performer

Good granular and it works, against the Fire & Harvester ant mounds.
By Mary on October 27, 2013
I highly recommend this product for killing ants. It was expensive. It's hard to state in instructions how much poison to sprinkle on ant mound because you don't know the size of the mound.

I live in Chandler Arizona and was having a problem with fire ants in my grass and rocks this year so I purchased this about a month ago and haven't seen any since. It states that the granules will last 4 months so I will update this review in another 3 if it doesn't last that long.

Superior product when it comes to Fire Ants , Fleas and Roaches . I spread over my yard and my Mothers yard on Lake Murray and within 2 days Ants were gone or dead ,fleas gone or dead , roaches gone or dead . It works fast and they stay out of yard / house for a minimum of 3 to 4 months before I see any return . I retreat the area and they are gone again !

I am very pleased with everything but the product. I saw a pest control company using a simular product and it worked extremely well. I had used another product available on this site that worked fairly well but not as well as what the pest control company used. I asked and was told it was Talstar Granules. I used the product the same way the pest control company did, but it does not kill the ants the way theirs did. The granuals they used were white and a little larger then these. I am not satisified with this product at all.

May 11, 2013Mantooth from Loudon Tn asked:
QHow would you treat mounds in a horse pasture with Talstar XTRA?
A According to the manufacturer, Talstar cannot be used in horse pastures for any purpose. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait would be a better choice for you. Extinguish plus can be used on pasture land and there are no grazing restrictions for companion animals. Below you will see the grazing info available on the Extinguish Plus product label. Extinguish Plus combines the power of hydramethylnon with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to kill fire ant workers and prevent queens from laying fertile eggs. The result is complete fire ant colony control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is best used in the spring or early fall, or whenever fire ants are active. The ants will feed off Extinuish Plus and spread the bait throughout the entire colony, halting the infestation within weeks. Extinguish Fire Ant Bait can be used indoors and outdoors on lawns, pasture land, rangeland, landscaped areas, and golf courses. EXTINGUISH PLUS may be applied to grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) for the control of fire ants
only in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas,
Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New
Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Use on grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) in states other than those
listed is unlawful. See Outdoor Use table for
application directions. Do not exceed 8 pounds per
acre per year or more than 4 times a year, with a
minimum re-treatment interval of 90 days. Do not bale
and cut treated pastures and rangelands for 7 days
following application. These cutting and baling hay
restrictions for pasture and rangeland do not apply
when the treated pasture and rangeland is used solely
to support COMPANION ANIMALS (e.g., horses,
llamas, etc.). Companion animals grazed on treated
areas cannot be used for food or feed. EXTINGUISH®
PLUS may be used on uncultivated, agricultural, nonfood
crop and non-agricultural land.

QIs Talstar Xtra Granules safe in areas where wild birds, squirrels and rabbit come to feed
I have bird feeders throughout my property, birds squirrels and rabbits all feed. I am concerned if there is any danger of harming them by using Talstar .....Thank you
ATalstar XTRA is a granule that would be applied with a broadcast spreader and then watered in by 1/4 inch of irrigation or rainfall to activate the product. Once you have watered in the Talstar XTRA and allow it to completely dry, Talstar XTRA is completely safe for birds, squirrels, rabitts, pets, and family members. Please refer to the Talstar XTRA Product Label for complete use instructions.
March 26, 2012Sam from Humble, Tx asked:
QWill Talstar Xtra repel roaches?
We live in texas and see the huge scary "tree" roaches from time to time...will this stuff repel or kill roaches?
ATalstar Xtra will not repel roaches nor is it labeled for roach control. We recommend that you stick with a product that is labeled for roaches such as Demand G granules. Demand G will not repel roaches either but it will kill roaches that come into contact with treated areas.
November 8, 2013Kathy from Osteen Fl. asked:
QIs Talstar XTRA labeled as restricted use?
August 4, 2013Jeff from Fwb Fl asked:
QCan Talstar Xtra be used around fruit trees?
ATalstar Xtra Granules cannot be used around a fruit tree or vegetable garden but can safely be used in a flower garden. For frui trees and vegetable gardens you can use a product such as Sevin Granules for insect control. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
April 12, 2013Carl from Mobile, Alabama asked:
QWhat setting do you use for a scot's standard spreader when applying Talstar XTRA Granules?
A Unfortunately the manufacturer does not give usage instructions for all of the different spreaders on the market. Here is how they suggest calibrating your spreader: If you need to use 1.5-4.6 lbs of product per 1,000 sq ft you would add the needed amount of product to spreader, start with a medium setting, then apply product to a 20 x 50 ft area (1,000 sq ft). If you have product left, your setting is too low. If you run out of product, your setting is too high. Be sure to read the product label to determine the usage rate for your needs.

May 8, 2013Chritine from Baker,fl asked:
QIs it safe for vegetable gardens
ATalstar XTRA Granules are not labled for vegetable gardens. Instead you could use something like Sevin Lawn Insect Granules. If a granule is not necessary, another great option would be the Fertilome Triple Action Plus which can be sprayed in and on the garden for control of insects and vegetable diseases, and the food can be harvested the same day.
