Fire Ant Control

Research trials and field tests conducted by industry professionals have proven that with the addition of its powerful new active ingredient (Zeta-Cypermethrin), Talstar XTRA granular insecticide eliminates fire ant colonies within four hours or less. And in some cases, the fire ant populations were decimated in minutes, not hours. At these speeds, other products can’t even come close to the control of Talstar XTRA granular insecticide.

Excellent Residual

In addition to its breakthrough active ingredient, Talstar XTRA granular insecticide has been formulated with the same long-lasting residual of Talstar PL granular insecticide, for the highly dependable control professionals have come to expect. While fire ants and other pests can be gone in as little as minutes, the residual protection of Talstar XTRA granular insecticide is proven to remain effective for at least four months.

Flexibility

Talstar XTRA is approved for use on a wide variety of application sites, including residential lawns, institutional grounds, around buildings (public, commercial and industrial), parks, recreational areas and athletic fields.

4 of 5 Stars  Just OK
By Bubba in Orlando, Florida on October 16, 2010

This product worked great... at first. Applied it correctly and it was like a nuclear bomb went off - no ants, no crickets, no anything. However, a week or so went by and the ants were back. Why? Probably because of local control. I have lots of sandy spots and those don't take to the poison well? I find the liquid talstar HARDER to apply, but it works better in all conditions. For some reason the granular works well for yards and areas with no sand, etc. The granules are also hard to spread in landscape beds. Talstar as a whole is the BEST so maybe the answer is to buy granular for the grassy areas that are usually large and hard to cover with spray and then buy the spray for the landscaping beds and sandy spots in your lawn. Either way BE CAREFUL this stuff is so toxic that in minutes lizards, crickets, and ants start to flee their hiding places and you'll find them everywhere... dead! 5 stars for the liquid Talstar for sure, 4 stars for Talstar XTRA because despite the fact it has pretty ant(s) on the packaging it is not that great for ant(s) and may not work around planting beds, near sidewalks, and/or empty patches in lawns.

Product is on the expensive side but works great, I have not seen an ant on my lawn since it was applied 2 weeks ago, it also seems to have killed the chinch bugs as I am seeing a change of the bald spots on my lawn.

5 of 5 Stars  Talstar Granules
By Robert in Macon, GA on April 14, 2012
    Verified Purchase

I put the granules out around the shrubbery and foundation of the house according to directions. I used the Talstar spray a month ago on the walls of the house. My roach problem has almost been elimintated. The Roaches I do see don't feel so good. Along with most other houses in Macon, last week we had our yearly infestation of redbugs crawling everywhere - except where that I had sprayed with Talstar. Good stuff and I like the lack of odor and ease of use. Make certain you have a good spreader.

We were getting ready to have a big birthday party for the Grandson and found too many fire ants to take the chance. We used the Talstar Xtra on the recomendation of a friend who is in the pest control business. We spread 50 pounds with the lawn spreader and didn't see one ANT at the party. Great product, Thanks.

We have used Talstar for several years to control fire ants, ticks, and fleas. Living in Florida, this is a very important factor in our lives, to live bug free. This product works and keeps on working year after year. We will never use anything else, except we do use Talstar liquid to spray our house. Also, this company is the best, they have never disappointed us; we really appreciate their prompt service.

Decided to try the XTRA versus the PL. Over a week and it did not kill any fire ants (3 different lawns). Still have mounds full. I'm not sure if the batch was bad, but definitely did not work.

  • 1 of 5 Stars  Not as effective as stated
By L in FL on March 19, 2015
    Verified Purchase

We used Talstar granules for ant control several years ago and it worked very well. Elected to go with the Talstar XTRA based on the product info and reviews and ordered 100#. Put all 100# down, some by hand spreader to enable me to increase the amount of granules in heavier infested areas and the other by push spreader - actually hand scooping out of the hopper to put additional granules on large ant mounds. There was a small ant mound on a brick walkway - put the granules directly on it by hand. Order another 50# as had another area that needed ant control. It rained after the initial spreading of the granules and within 2 days the ants on the brick walkway were alive and well! Had to supplement with a liquid 'kill them now' insect control. Needless to say for the amount of money we spent for 150# of this we are extremely disappointed. We will be looking for something else for our future ant control.

By Kendyll in Kansas City, MO on September 20, 2014

Product shipped the next day and received it within three days of purchase. Product was easy to use and instructions were very clear on the website. Product appears to have worked exactly as advertised. Used it for mole crickets that had set up a home in my backyard and they were attracting some very unwelcome garter snakes! Now, no crickets and haven't seen a snake either! Thankfully.

QWhat is the coverage of a 25lb bag of Talstar XTRA Granules?

AEach bag of Talstar Xtra Granules will cover 5,000 to 10,000 square feet. August 4, 2013 Jeff from Fwb Fl asked:

QCan Talstar Xtra be used around fruit trees?

ATalstar Xtra Granules cannot be used around a fruit tree or vegetable garden but can safely be used in a flower garden. For frui trees and vegetable gardens you can use a product such as Sevin Granules for insect control. As long as you keep the product away from the dripline of the tree you should be able to use the Talstar Xtra granules safely around the fruit tree. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

May 11, 2013 Mantooth from Loudon Tn asked:

QHow would you treat mounds in a horse pasture with Talstar XTRA?

A

According to the manufacturer, Talstar cannot be used in horse pastures for any purpose.

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait would be a better choice for you. Extinguish plus can be used on pasture land and there are no grazing restrictions for companion animals. Below you will see the grazing info available on the Extinguish Plus product label. Extinguish Plus combines the power of hydramethylnon with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to kill fire ant workers and prevent queens from laying fertile eggs. The result is complete fire ant colony control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is best used in the spring or early fall, or whenever fire ants are active. The ants will feed off Extinuish Plus and spread the bait throughout the entire colony, halting the infestation within weeks. Extinguish Fire Ant Bait can be used indoors and outdoors on lawns, pasture land, rangeland, landscaped areas, and golf courses.

EXTINGUISH PLUS may be applied to grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) for the control of fire ants
only in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas,
Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New
Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Use on grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) in states other than those
listed is unlawful. See Outdoor Use table for
application directions. Do not exceed 8 pounds per
acre per year or more than 4 times a year, with a
minimum re-treatment interval of 90 days. Do not bale
and cut treated pastures and rangelands for 7 days
following application. These cutting and baling hay
restrictions for pasture and rangeland do not apply
when the treated pasture and rangeland is used solely
to support COMPANION ANIMALS (e.g., horses,
llamas, etc.). Companion animals grazed on treated
areas cannot be used for food or feed. EXTINGUISH®
PLUS may be used on uncultivated, agricultural, nonfood
crop and non-agricultural land.

March 14, 2010 Stacey asked:

QDoes the Talstar Granular Insecticide also help control termites?

ANo, Talstar Xtra Granules would not be a good option when treating for termites.  Talstar Xtra Granules and other liquid products that are meant for pest control are applied to the surface of the ground and are really only meant for treating insects that walk across the ground.  Termites enter the home from underground and never make it to the surface of the ground.  Therefore, they never come into contact with the product on the surface.  For proper termite protection, you have to dig a trench and place product in the trench or under the ground.  For treating termites, we recommend Dominion 2L which is one of our best sellers for professional termite protection.  You should also read our "How to do a Termite Treatment" article which will explain exactly how to treat for termites just like a professional company would.

April 15, 2015 Jim from Conway, Ar. asked:

QHow does Talstar Xtra Granules work against chiggers?

A Talstar Xtra granules is not labeled for control of chiggers and definitely would not be recommended for control of that pest. A much better option would be an insecticide like Onslaught Insecticide to be mixed with water and sprayed in the areas chiggers harbor around the property. Treatments for chiggers should begin in April/May and could need to continue through the summer as new chiggers move into the area. Treating the entire lawn is of little benefit because chiggers avoid direct sunlight and normally will not infest areas that are mowed or otherwise well maintained. Focus treatment on the unkempt areas of the lawn and lawn edge. You can also use Onslaught to do a barrier treatment around the outside of your home and in your crawl space to stop pests from moving indoors.

April 8, 2015 Julie from Sterling asked:

QWill this really work on deer ticks and other lyme carrying critters?

A Talstar XTRA Granule is a great product to use for Ticks and other pest. However, we are more partial to the Tick control kit. The Tick kit includes an adulticide and IGR to break down the reproductive cycle.

March 12, 2015 Roy from Saucier Ms (south Ms) asked:

QI applied talstar to my yard and it rained for two days afterwards. Do you think it washed away?
I'm trying to kill mole crickets and see a couple of the little dirt mounds have popped back up. How long does it take to start working on the crickets?

A Talstar XTRA granules need to be on the ground for at least 24 hours before it rains so that is has time to get into the soil and not wash away. When treating for mole crickets, it does need  to be watered in at least 0.5 inches of water after it has been applied.

QI'm looking for the most of effective way to treat ant piles that keep popping up across a large area of land.
I currently spot treat the piles but they pop up over and over in different areas of the property. My previous order of Talstar-p from you has been a success so far for treating the perimeter of my residence.

A You can use Talstar P as a broadcast over your entire lawn to help with ant contol at 1oz per gallon of water/1,000 sq ft. You can also use Tastar XTRA Granules as a broadcast over the entire lawn. A 25lb bag of the Talstar XTRA Granules will treat 5,000 to 10, 000 sq feet and can also be used as individual lawn treatments. The granules will last 2-4 months outside as a broadcast treatment.

September 8, 2014 Nancy from Blanco, Tx asked:

QIf I already put these granules on my black-eyed pea crop, before I read the Q & A, will it poison the crop? Will I get sick from eating the peas?

A

Talstar XTRA Granules are not labled for vegetable gardens. We cannot advise for you to consume anything from the garden after Talstar Xtra was applied. Instead you could use something like Sevin Lawn Insect Granules. If a granule is not necessary, another great option would be the Fertilome Triple Action Plus which can be sprayed in and on the garden for control of insects and vegetable diseases, and the food can be harvested the same day.

QOut side granules sprinkled around exterior of house for roach/bug contol
Before I was using Do-it-yourself, I had an exterminator using granules (like fertilizer textur) which he sprinkled around the exterior perimeter of our house to kill roach/bugs, I did'nt get the brand name but it said L-2 and G-1. Do you know what type insecticide this is so I can buy from DIY. The previous company was Orkin, they went from using spray to granules around outside every 2 months. Thank You..
