Fire Ant Control

Research trials and field tests conducted by industry professionals have proven that with the addition of its powerful new active ingredient (Zeta-Cypermethrin), Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide eliminates fire ant colonies within four hours or less. And in some cases, the fire ant populations were decimated in minutes, not hours. At these speeds, other products can’t even come close to the control of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide.

Excellent Residual

In addition to its breakthrough active ingredient, Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide has been formulated with the same long-lasting residual of Talstar PL Granular Insecticide, for the highly dependable control professionals have come to expect. While fire ants and other pests can be gone in as little as minutes, the residual protection of Talstar XTRA Granular Insecticide is proven to remain effective for at least four months.

Flexibility

Talstar XTRA is approved for use on a wide variety of application sites, including residential lawns, institutional grounds, around buildings (public, commercial and industrial), parks, recreational areas and athletic fields.

    Just OK

    By Bubba on 10/16/2010

This product worked great... at first. Applied it correctly and it was like a nuclear bomb went off - no ants, no crickets, no anything. However, a week or so went by and the ants were back. Why? Probably because of local control. I have lots of sandy spots and those don't take to the poison well? I find the liquid talstar HARDER to apply, but it works better in all conditions. For some reason the granular works well for yards and areas with no sand, etc. The granules are also hard to spread in landscape beds. Talstar as a whole is the BEST so maybe the answer is to buy granular for the grassy areas that are usually large and hard to cover with spray and then buy the spray for the landscaping beds and sandy spots in your lawn. Either way BE CAREFUL this stuff is so toxic that in minutes lizards, crickets, and ants start to flee their hiding places and you'll find them everywhere... dead! 5 stars for the liquid Talstar for sure, 4 stars for Talstar XTRA because despite the fact it has pretty ant(s) on the packaging it is not that great for ant(s) and may not work around planting beds, near sidewalks, and/or empty patches in lawns.

    Fire Ants

    By Roscoe on 04/09/2012

    Verified Purchase

We were getting ready to have a big birthday party for the Grandson and found too many fire ants to take the chance. We used the Talstar Xtra on the recomendation of a friend who is in the pest control business. We spread 50 pounds with the lawn spreader and didn't see one ANT at the party. Great product, Thanks.

Product is on the expensive side but works great, I have not seen an ant on my lawn since it was applied 2 weeks ago, it also seems to have killed the chinch bugs as I am seeing a change of the bald spots on my lawn.

    Talstar Granules

    By Robert on 04/14/2012

    Verified Purchase

I put the granules out around the shrubbery and foundation of the house according to directions. I used the Talstar spray a month ago on the walls of the house. My roach problem has almost been elimintated. The Roaches I do see don't feel so good. Along with most other houses in Macon, last week we had our yearly infestation of redbugs crawling everywhere - except where that I had sprayed with Talstar. Good stuff and I like the lack of odor and ease of use. Make certain you have a good spreader.

Q
What setting on a Scott's spreader would you use to apply Talstar XTRA Granules?
A

The spreader settings Talstar XTRA Granules will vary on the insects you are treating and the rate (low, mid or high rate) Please refer to the product label to view the Spreader Settings Table for setting recommendations on the most common spreaders. The table only lists the Scotts SpeedyGreen 2000 and the Scotts Handy Green II Spreader so if you have a different model spreader, we would suggest contacting Scotts at 888-270-3714 for assistance.

Q
What spreader setting do I choose for my Scotts Speedy Green 3000 spreader if I'm applying the Talstar Xtra granules?
A

The Taltar Xtra bag does not specifically list setting for the Scotts Speedy Green 3000, but it does list the Scotts SpeedyGreen 2000 and its spreader settings. If this is what you meant, or those two spreaders are compatible with settings, you can use setting 2 3/4 for putting out 1.15 lbs per 1000 sq/ft, 5 1/4 for 2.3lbs per 1000 sq/ft, or 9 for putting out 4.6 lbs per 1000 sq/ft. Otherwise if your settings do not match up, you would want to calibrate your spreader for the product. Here are instructions on how to calibrate your spreader.

How to calibrate your spreader:

Almost all fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc have treatments in amounts of so much product per 1000 square feet.  So if you can figure out what your walking speed is then you know anytime you apply any product that calls for so much of it per 1000 square feet, you always set your spreader on this setting.  You can calibrate this by marking off a 1000 square foot (10 x 100) area and placing the required amount of product in pounds in the spreader.  Start with a low setting and start walking your marked off area at a normal pace.  You can adjust as you go and find the basic setting for you to apply the product over a 1000 square feet.

Q
What setting do you use for a scot's standard spreader when applying Talstar XTRA Granules?
A

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not give usage instructions for all of the different spreaders on the market. Here is how they suggest calibrating your spreader:

If you need to use 1.5-4.6 lbs of product per 1,000 sq ft you would add the needed amount of product to spreader, start with a medium setting, then apply product to a 20 x 50 ft area (1,000 sq ft).  If you have product left, your setting is too low.  If you run out of product, your setting is too high.

Be sure to read the product label to determine the usage rate for your needs.

Q
What setting do I need to use for my Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini broadcast spreader to apply Talstar XTRA Granules?
A

The manufacturer does not list this particular model spreader on the Talstar XTRA Granules product label.  We typically recommend that if you need to use 1.5-4.6 lbs of product per 1,000 sq. ft., you would add the needed amount of product to spreader, start with a medium setting, then apply product to a 20 x 50 ft area (1,000 sq ft).  If you have product left, your setting is too low.  If you run out of product, your setting is too high.  If this does not help, you can also contact FMC directly for assistance with calibrating your spreader at 800-321-1362.  Scott's also has a Spreader Settings Tool available on their website here.
