The 4 x 4s holding up an upper deck are being eaten by ants at ground level

What can I do kill the ants and protect the wood? Is there a chemical stake I could drive down at each 4x4?

Answer:

We highly suggest making sure that you have carpenter ants and not termites as carpenter ants are the only species of ant that would be eating at your wood. You may want to get an inspection done by a professional to make sure you are aware of all activity areas and damage. If the carpenter ants are eating away at the wood, you would want to drill a hole in the wood and inject something like Termidor foam into the galleries the ants have eaten away. You may want to look at trenching around the piers with something like Termidor SC as well.
