Todd from Sioux Falls, South Dakota writes

What is killing my grass in a pattern around my walnut tree?

After the snow melt, I noticed a ring of grass - about three feet from my large black walnut tree - 12 to 24 inches in width of dead grass. Some of the grass was covered with cob webs. The pattern also extended to a small shed then in other parts of the yard. Last year I noticed similar small patches of grass that were killed in the late spring to early summer. I pulled out all of the dead grass and reseaded the areas. I applied a granular insect control product a couple of times last year and did not see any further incidents. What could be killing my grass and how do I kill it?

Answer:

We apologize but we cannot make an accurate identification of what disease or insect is doing the damage to your lawn. Our best recommendation would be to have either a local pest control company that offers free inspections or a master gardener in your area come look at your grass and trees to make that identification. Try contacting your local cooperative extension office to see if others in your area are having similar symptoms as they may know of a disease that is causing problems right now. Once you know what you have, we can give you the product needed to treat for it and teach you how to apply it.
