Karen from St. Cloud, Florida writes

I am looking for a general insecticide to kills bugs and fleas.

I am looking to eliminate bugs in general, but the fleas have gotten out of control at my dad's house. I have recently moved in to take care of him as he has developed vascular dementia, and it has been probably 5 years of neglect to the grounds and house. With 3 dogs and 3 cats, I need serious flea control. We have .7 acres of sandy soil and lawn in central Florida and a 1400 square foot house. What do you recommend and in what quantities?

Answer:

We would recommend using a product called Bifen IT. It is labeled for over 75 different pests, fleas included. You will mix 1 fl. oz. per gallon of water. This will treat 1000 square feet. We would also recommend mixing Bifen IT with an insect growth regulator, such as Nyguard. This is used as a birth control for the fleas, as well as various other pests as well. You will use 1 fl. oz. per gallon of water. For flea treatments, you will need to do treatments every 14 days. Both of these products can be used indoors and outdoors. If you are treating for fleas indoors, you will need to vacuum the floors daily for 14 days and do a second treatment with the Bifen IT only. The same goes for outdoors, except you are not vacuuming. We would recommend getting the 3/4 gallon size of Bifen IT. This will make 96 gallons of finished solution. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
