Joyce from East Aurora, N.y. writes

I don't know if we have fungus gnats or drain flies-how do I identify?

They are in every room in the house and basement. They appear to be brownish in color. Fly right in or near our faces. We can't even eat dinner without them attacking us and food. We just had basements walls cleaned of mold and painted and still have them. Just can't figure out where they're coming from. Please help if you can.

Answer:

If you are able to catch a few on a glue board, a local pest control operator should be able to identify them. You could also contact your local extension office. For either fungus gnats or drain flies, we would recommend using DF 5000 Drain Gel. This is drain cleaner that will coat the inside of the drain and kill any bacteria that either of the pests could be feeding on. We would also recommend using Gentrol IGR aerosol. This will stop them from reproducing.
