Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait
  • Alternate Image 1

Extinguish Plus combines the power of hydramethylnon with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to kill fire ant workers and prevent queens from laying fertile eggs. The result is complete fire ant colony control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is best used in the spring or early fall, or whenever fire ants are active. The ants will feed off Extinuish Plus and spread the bait throughout the entire colony, halting the infestation within weeks. Extinguish Fire Ant Bait can be used indoors and outdoors on lawns, pasture land, rangeland, landscaped areas, and golf courses.

TIPS:  This product can take 4 to 7 days to see results, however, you should only apply this product if the soil temperature is about 65 degrees, it is not going to rain within 8 hours, and the fire ants are foraging. It is recommended to broadcast the treatment instead of mound treat for best results, and you should apply the product where the ground is in the sun, since this is where fire ants will nest. You can use this product on pastureland. It may be applied to grass forage (pasture and rangeland) for the control of fire ants only in the following states - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

No grazing restrictions for companion animals, (horses, llamas etc).

Now you can have fast acting, long lasting fire ant control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is the only dual active fire ant bait that kills the workers and sterilizes the queen. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is highly attractive to fire ants. It combines the killing speed of an adulticide (Hydramethylnon) and the long-lasting control of an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) (S-Methoprene). The IGR sterilizes the queen and prevents rebound, while the fast acting adulticide kills problem worker ants. This two-way action ensures complete control of fire ants.

  • Controls and eliminates colonies without colony relocation
  • Stops young colonies from developing into problem colonies
  • Destroys visible and hidden colonies
  • Approved for indoor and outdoor use
  • Starts killing ants immediately after ingestion
  • Can be used as a broadcast application or used to treat individual mounds
  • Can be used on pasture and rangeland

When should I apply the bait?

  • While spring and fall are the best time to apply the bait, you may apply as needed, when ants are active and foraging (usually early morning or late afternoon with soil temperatures above 60° F).
  • To determine when ants are foraging, place a potato chip near the mound. If ants do not feed in a few minutes, try the test again later and apply product when feeding occurs.
  • Apply product when area is dry from dew or irrigation. Do not apply product within 6 hours of a rain event. Wet bait is unattractive to ants.

Broadcast application

  • Use 1.5 pounds per acre.
  • Spread with a hand-held spreader, backpack, motorized equipment or aircraft.
  • Set the spreader at the lowest setting, treating the outer perimeter first. Then apply in a strip pattern within that area.

Individual mound treatment

  • Use 2-5 tablespoons per mound.
  • Distribute bait uniformly around each mound.
  • Do not disturb mound during application.

Refillable bait stations

  • Place one refilaable bait  station such as the Ant No More Bait Station every 15-30 feet along the perimeter of a structure or fence line. Also place them near potential entry points, including weep holes, foundation vents, stairs and decks.
  • Place up to 2 tablespoons of bait per station.
  • Inspect stations frequently and replenish bait as it is soiled or has become wet.

Indoor Use

Apply bait ONLY into crack and crevices. Apply 2 teaspoons - 1 tablespoon per crack, crevice or other in accessible areas where ants are entering the structure or where ants are nesting.

Is Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait or Extinguish Plus waterproof? How do weather conditions affect it?

If Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait or Extinguish Plus gets wet, it will have reduced palatability, and therefore reduces results. The product should be applied while ground conditions are dry and where rainfall is not expected for more that six hours. Most foraging ants will pick up the bait within six hours after placement.

5 of 5 stars  Fire Ants in Tampa, Florida
By David in Tampa, Florida on 06/13/2010
    Verified Purchase

A friend of mine from Texas recommended this product to me. I am allergic to Fire Ant toxins. When I sprinkle this stuff over the mound, the ants grab it quickly and take it down the ant hole. The mound and ants are gone by the next day.

5 of 5 stars  Extinguish + works but you have to follow the rules...
By Jo in Coastal North Carolina on 03/12/2013

We have had perfect results with this product for many years. You HAVE to understand HOW it works to be successful. Our process is as follows: 1. When ambient ground temp is 65 degrees (1st week of May typically), we broadcast 2 lbs per acre (looks like nothing, but it is sufficient), on a day when no rain is expected for at LEAST 3 days following. 2. Mound treat as needed through the summer. We are bordered by farm fields that are NOT treated, the edge of the field always need "help" and we can not treat their land. 3. Broadcast a second time in late September when no rain is expected and before a cold snap hits. Soil temperature is essential.

4 of 5 stars  Extinguish Plus for Myrmica Rubra
By Jeremy in Portland, Maine on 07/08/2010

I have been studying the effectiveness of various toxins in controlling a serious northern fire ant infestation on a small island off the coast of Maine. So far, the most practical combination seems to be an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) followed by Hydramethylnon. Initially, I used Methoprene (Extinguish) and hydramethylnon (Amdro) sequentially, separated by about a week, then, a few weeks later, followed up with the two together (Extinguish-Plus). This seems to have virtually eliminated the fire ants from the treated area, at least for the present season. In another area, I used the Extinguish-Plus alone about a week ago. So far I have seen many piles of dead ant carcasses, indicating that the bait is working, but there are still plenty of worker ants busily carrying away more carcasses, so only more time will tell whether the substances used together is as good as the two used separately. I welcome the experience of others using these and other toxins.

1 of 5 stars  Forget it.....
By Joseph in Macon, GA on 11/22/2011

I had high hopes for Extinguish Plus after reading an in-depth online review on fireant control from Texas. It was listed as one of the most cost-effective treatments - and I took the bait (pun intended). I have a 3 acre lot and the recommended application rate was 1 - 1.5 lbs / acre.... so, the 4.5 lb should have been just what I needed - right? Well, it sounded like a good idea until the product arrived.... the volume of the 4.5 lbs is quite small, making it next to impossible to accurately distribute over a large area with any common hand or drop spreader. I called DoMyOwnPestControl first to see if they had any recommendations.... the naive young lady who answered my call told me MOST people buy the 20 lb bag....... that would be about 7 times the recommended application rate (and over $200)!!! I'm sure the EPA would not look favorably on such wreckless advice. I then called the manufacturer - they recommended I map out 20' by 20' grids and apply the product in small mounds at the intersection of the grid lines...... so, that's what I did - a painstaking process that took several hours. I checked the bait after application and did see ants foraging the material. It's been over 2 weeks now - and the ants are as thick as they ever were... I detect little, if any, effectiveness. I would have done just as well to throw $70+ in nickles, dimes and pennies over the lawn. Don't waste your money (or time) with this product unless you plan on overdosing the environment with a 20 lb bag.....

On the one hill we have used it on, this product worked quickly and very well. We only had the one hill, put the prescribed 2 tablespoons on it. Ants eat bait, take product back to nest, and all ants are killed. Based on one time use, I highly recommend.

  • 2 of 5 stars  Extinguish Plus Did Not Work As Well As Extinguish
By William in Prattville, Alabama on 09/29/2017

I have used extinguish with good results. The Extinguish Plus does not work as well. It only got rid of 50% of the fire ant colonies. I suspect the insecticide in the plus kills the workers before the bait reaches the queen. I assume she never receives the IGR. It would be better if the plus is dropped and the original Extinguish is brought back in a size suitable for home owners. In addition, I need the product quickly. Otherwise I would have gone to Amazon where the price was lower.

5 of 5 stars  Great product
By Henry in Little Mountain, SC on 04/27/2017

I've been using this product for several years - since Over and Out changed their formula and ruined its effectiveness. It's the best thing that I have found to treat my 2 acre lawn. I spread it thinly in the spring when hills first appear, and then spot treat around any mounds that may pop up later. Now, if I could just afford to treat the roadsides and fields life would be fire ant free!

QIs Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait harmful to horses, dogs and cats?
How soon can pets be released in a treated area?

AExtinguish Plus cannot be used in areas where horses will graze. For grazing areas only the Extinguish (not the Extinguish PLUS) can be used. Extinguish Plus is safe to use around dogs and cats, they just need to be out of the area while the application is being made.

QAre Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait Granules harmful to pets?

A

No, Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait Granules are a very safe solution to fire ants.  When you apply this product, you normally would broadcast it over your lawn in such a small amount there would not be enough of it in one place for your pet to consume.  This product is only strong enough to kill a very small ant.  Of course (like any other product), you would want to make sure that you keep the opened bag of granules in a safe place where the pet could not get into the open bag.

QCan we use Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait until the winter in Florida?
Its November and I read that it would work in winter.

A

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait works best in the spring and summer when temperatures are warmer and the ants are actively seeking a food source. Since you are located in Florida, you may have a longer period where they will be accepting of a bait. To discover acceptance, place a potato chip on the mound. Please take a few moments to review our treatment article/video on How to Get Rid of Fire Ants for a successful program.

QCan you use Extinguish Plus on pastures and rangeland or can you not?
Your label is saying can be applied to grass forage (pasture and rangeland) but in the Q&A it states that (Not to be used where horses are grazing)I always assume that pasture & range land includes horses. Which is correct?

A

We apologize for any confusion and we will update the Q&As on both products to reflect the most up to date labeling and accurate information. The Extinguish Fire Ant Bait can be applied to pastures and rangeland with zero grazing restrictions or withdrawal periods. The Extinguish Plus can be used on pastureland as well. Any animals that would be used for food or sold would need to be kept off the area or use the Extinguish Fire Ant Bait instead.

QIs Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait safe to apply close to recreational fish ponds?
Would it be harmful to fish that happen to eat a pellet as it sinks in the water. The fish in my pond are fed floating fish food and anything that hits the surface of the pond is perceived as food. Thanks!

A

You do not want to apply Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait near an area where the product could run off into the water. It is highly toxic to fish and aquatic life.

QHow much of Extinguish Plus do I need to cover 3,000 sq. ft?
If 1.5 lb of Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait covers 1 acre, how much will cover 3,000 sq. ft. and to what setting would I need to set the rotary spreader on?

A

For Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Baita 1.5 lb container which when broadcasted will cover an acre. Just one of those would be sufficient to cover that area multiple times for new colonies that pop up. You should mound treat or just sprinkle it out of the container a little bit rather than use a spreader. It is hard to find a spreader with a small enough setting.

QWhat can I use to treat fire ant mounds in my pasture?

A

We would recommend using Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait. A broadcast treatment across the entire area would be best so that the fire ants do not just move their mounds to other areas. If you do an individual mound treatment, be sure to treat at least three feet out as well. There are no grazing restrictions for companion animals, such as horses, llamas, etc. You will use 1.5-2 lbs. per acre for a broadcast application and 2-5 tablespoons for individual mounds. While spring and fall are the best time to apply the bait, you may apply as needed, when ants are active and foraging (usually early morning or late afternoon with soil temperatures above 60° F).

**Ants must be foraging for this to work. You should not apply this product in the late fall or winter of ants are not foraging...it will not work! Also, bait must remain dry. Do not apply if it is going to rain within 8 hours.

QHow do I keep fire ants out of electrical contacts on my well motor?

A

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait would be a good choice, you can use it in Ants No More Bait Stations if it's outdoors. Fire ants must be actively foraging for food in order for the bait to work. Another bait you can use is Advance 375A Select Granular Ant Bait and Advion Ant Bait Gel inside Bait Plate Stations if it's indoors or Ants No more Bait Stations as well, if outdoors.

QWhy did all mounds treated with Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait not collapse?
We treated approximately 20 mounds one dry afternoon after checking for foraging with the potato chip. Most mounds seemed to have died within a day or two (hurrah!) but a few mounds either moved or still seem active. What happened?

A

It is recommended to broadcast the treatment of Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait instead of mound treat for best results.  This is because fire ants do not always come out from the mound area but instead have tunnels coming out 10 feet or more away from the mound. Extinguish Plus is one of the most effective fire ant baits on the market and most folks see results within just a few days but it can take longer depending on the size of the colony. Also, Extinguish will not prevent any new colonies from moving in so treatments should be done as needed following the instructions on the product label. There are also some great tips here.

QCan I use Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait in my horse pasture?

A

Yes, you can use Extinguish Plus FIre Ant Bait  in pastures where you have companion animals that are not used for food or feed. We recommend that they are removed from the area that is treated for at least 48 hours after application, Then they can return to the land after that 48 hours. You cannot graze or feed lawn clippings treated with Extinguish Plus to livestock.

We also have Extinguish Fire Ant Bait as well, and has no withdrawl or grazing restrictions on the label.
