Mark from Evanston, Il writes

Is there a pre-emergent weed control that won't kill new grass seed?

What would you recommend for a small lawn that needs to be reseeded in early spring due to a grub infestation? We have bad crabgrass and dandelion issues around here (Chicago suburb). Also pets. Thank you

Answer:

Most pre-emergent herbicides should not be used at or near the time of seeding since they are designed to prevent seed germination. Per the product label for Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper with Dimension Herbicide, this product should be applied only to lawns and turfgrasses that are well established. The exception is that in newly established lawns of Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass and/or Tall Fescue, you can use this product two weeks after the first sign of germination. A pre-emergent that can be applied at seeding is Tenacity Herbicide.
