Jim from Pennsylvania writes

my oak tree has wet wood disease and draws hornets in summer when it weeps. What product would you recommend?

Answer:

We are not familiar with wet wood disease to know if it is treatable or not so you may want to talk to your local Master Gardener or Cooperative Extension to find out what your options are. For any hornets or wasps that come around the tree, you could use a product like Talstar P on the trunks and foliage and surrounding areas to control any that would land on those surfaces. You would mix Talstar at the rate of 1 ounce per gallon of water and spray the surfaces until wet. Talstar has a residual of at least 30 days outdoors, and depending on the conditions in the environment it could last up to 60-90 days. It is safe to be used outdoors on turf and ornamentals but not for use on edible vegetation. It can also be used indoors around baseboards and cracks for any other insects as the label covers over 100 different pests.
