These type of insects do not fly, they remain in the area where they are released. Having them on any lawn or garden is completely safe to pets, humans and the environment itself. Mantids do not move much and blend perfectly well with the environment. Instead of hunting for something to eat, mantids are contented in waiting for their food to walk by and just grab it with their forelegs.

Information About Praying Mantids:

What it is used for: Praying Mantids will eat various varieties of garden pests. When they are younger, they will eat aphids, flies, maggots, thrips, leafhoppers, small caterpillars, chinch bugs, earwigs, beetles, grasshoppers, sow bugs, and many more.

Application: Put the egg case in a limb, hedge, bush or anywhere that is two feet or higher from the ground. This egg case can be placed in the fork of a branch or hung with a piece of string or needle and thread outside of the case. If you hang this egg case, it will keep rodents and birds away from eating the eggs. If there are ants present in the area, oiling the string will keep them away.

Cycle of Praying Mantids: Praying Mantids will hatch from their egg case along the seam that looks like louvered windows with mud packed on the top. In the Spring they will hatch when it is warm. The warmer the temperature, the faster they will hatch. The Mantids will come out as miniature adults, unlike other insects. They will be around half an inch long and will grow in the Spring and Summer until they are around 5 to 6 inches long. Shedding of the skin is normal and will happen. Mantids have wings and will use these in the Fall when wings for a female develop and she will start flying around looking for a mate. She will eat the male’s head off after mating, which will help nourish her eggs. She will then attach the brown foam to a branch, lay her eggs inside then afterwards will die. The eggs are protected in the foam during the cold Winter and the cycle will repeat in the Spring.
