Planting and Growing Instructions

New Seeding

Prepare the soil by tilling to a depth of 4 - 6 inches. Conduct a soil test to be sure your soil has the proper nutrients it needs for a healthy lawn. Apply fertilizer and soil amendments, such as lime or gypsum, at the recommended rates. If you are unable to conduct a soil test, apply a complete lawn fertilizer according to the recommended rates on the packages. Work fertilizer or soil amendments evenly into the soil, then rake the soil surface smooth to give the seed an ideal bed in which to establish healthy roots. Sow the grass seed by evenly spreading according to the recommended seeding rates. Rake, harrow, or otherwise work the seed into the soil. Keep the area well watered until the seeds germinate and the seedlings have grown sufficiently to establish a lawn, then water as needed.

Overseeding or Re-Seeding

Before overseeding, it is important to prepare the soil. Conduct a soil test to be sure your lawn has the proper balance of nutrients. Fertilize and add soil amendments if needed. Mow or clip the existing grass as closely as possible. Remove clippings and rake, harrow lightly, or aerate the soil where there is existing lawn. This will allow the new seed to make contact with the soil. Sow the seed and gently rake to cover. Keep the lawn moist until seedlings are established, then water as needed.

Undesirable Lawns

Rid your lawn of undesirable grasses following the steps below so that you can establish a desirable lawn:

  • During any growing season, spray the established undesirable turf with a non-selective herbicide labeled for lawn use. Follow the directions on the label.

  • After the lawn turns brown, continue with your seeding program as outlined above. Be sure to start with a soil test or a soil amendment, such as fertilizer.

Improving Bare Spots

Mow your lawn closely, then remove leaves, dead grass, etc. Rake, harrow lightly, or aerate the bare spots to prepare the seedbed. Conduct a soil test to be sure the soil has the proper balance of nutrients. Fertilize and add soil amendments if needed.

Additional Care Tips

  • Once your grass is 1/3 taller than the recommended mowing height you may begin mowing it.

  • Avoid removing more than 1/3 of the total grass blade length at any single mowing to keep your grass thick and healhy.

  • Increase your mowing height in summer months to reduce grass stress.

    first 2 weeks

    By Matt on 05/03/2019

planted two weeks ago (mid April) in Texas, growing bright green. Bright green. I raked the ground before hand and after laying the seeds put top soil over part of it. The area that I added the top soil to is looking great. that area is also shaded

    No new grass

    By Cynthia on 05/15/2020

I never leave bad reviews but none of the seeds produced new grass so I am sure it was a bad bag of seed. I followed the planting directions and kept soil moist but again no new grass. I would not recommend this product.

    grass seed for dense shade

    By Gary on 09/17/2022

My back yard is about 90% covered in dense shade. I am trying this seed for the first time so do not know how well it will perform when fully mature. However, it did germinate very quickly and looks very good at 2" tall so I am encouraged.

Are the blades like rye grass (hard to cut and clump)? When should it be spread in my region?

A

The Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Grass Seed Mix is a mix of unhulled Bermuda grass seeds that is intended for use in very shaded areas. As far as weed and other control is concerned, you may want to keep the Centipede and Bermuda grass separate for easier care. Or you could choose a different blend that is more versatile, such as the Pennington Smart Seed Sun and Shade Mix Grass Seed.
