Product Overview

Garlon 4 Ultra Herbicide is the industry standard for herbicide control. Made by Dow AgroSciences, this product keeps right-of-ways, roadsides and other noncrop sites clear of unwanted weeds. Using triclopyr as its active ingredient, Garlon 4 Ultra Herbicide controls 80 different plants that other methods of control would have a difficult time dealing with. Just follow one of the varied applications, from basal, cut-stump or stem treatments, to get rid of the problem plants. Garlon 4 Ultra Herbicide uses a plant-based solvent that follows all of the new environmental regulations that make other petroleum-based products unusable. It is also less toxic to non-target plants and has a milder smell than other herbicides.

Basal treatments - This treatment is best for routine maintenance, the trees are less than 6 inches in diameter, for year-round use except for wet conditions, and for low profile applications around desirable vegetation, to not affect them in any way. Spray the product on the lower 12 to 15 inches of bark around the stem and spray until the bark is wet. Do not apply when the bark is wet from rain or heavy dew. If the product turns white when applied, that is an indicator that the bark is too wet.

Dormant-stem treatments - This treatment is best during the late fall and winter after the leaves fall. The product works to control small, woody plants, while offering flexibility to adjust to different plant species. This makes for keeping work crews busy during slow work periods. The product penetrates the bark, killing the weeds. Just spray the product directly on individual plants or clumps of weeds.

Cut-stump application - An easy and efficient method, this treatment is effective for controlling tree stumps, stopping any resprouting. This works great in open, highly visible areas, keeping ugly brownout at bay. The product can be applied at any time of the year, though it is best right after the tree was felled. Do not apply when ice, snow or water prevents spraying on the ground. Spray the 2 outer inches of the wood around the entire stump, as well as the bark down to the ground level and any exposed roots.

Cut-stubble application - This application is for controlling cut brush to keep it from growing, which would need to be moved otherwise. This works at any time of the year. This application keeps the brush from growing, making a single mechanical clearing last for 8 to 10 years. It also prevents unsightly brownout and weed and brush reseeding. Dilute the product with water and spray the desired area right after clearing the area, before reseeding can occur. Do not apply when the ground is frozen, snow covered or when standing water is present.

Hack-and-squirt application - Cut the tree with a hatchet or machete to create a 3 inch deep pocket where the herbicide can be applied and is absorbed into the cambium of the tree. Only spray the cut with enough herbicide to partially fill the cut. Do not fill the cut to the point where it can spill out or apply it during heavy sap flow periods. This method is best for large trees in sensitive areas without cutting them down, though it takes longer than traditional methods.

Injection application - This application takes the herbicide and uses a tree injector to deliver it directly to the cambium and xylem. This is best for difficult to control species, though it takes longer than other methods. Just place the holes at 2 inch intervals. For maximum control, use basal or foliar applications at the same time. Do not apply to sap-flowing species during their sap excretion periods, since it will push the herbicide out of the injection points.

    Amazing

    By Jc on 12/03/2016

We have a large stand of invasive Brazilian pepper on the back of our property. We recently used this with basal bark treatment as recommended by IFAS/UofFL. Used leftover tank mixture as foliar. After a month, the trees appear to be completely dead. Highly recommend, but you must read the label thoroughly (as always) and use as directed.

Q
How much Garlon 4 do I use to one gallon of water to kill small seedlings ( Pine, Cedar, etc.)?

what is the ratio for a 4 gal sprayer? how many ounces per gallon. I have a bunch of trees 1-6 inches in diameter

A

For lower volume basal stem applications of Garlon 4 Herbicide to control seedlings, you would use 20-30 gallons of Garlon 4 in enough oil to make 100 gallons of solution. This breaks down to 25-38 oz of Garlon 4 per gallon of oil solution. Per page 7 of the product label under "Low Volume Basal Bark Treatment": Spray the basal parts of brush and tree trunks to a height of 12-15 inches from the ground in a manner that thoroughly wets the lower stems, including the root collar area, but not to the point of runoff.

Q
Will Garlon 4 kill globe chamomile?
A

Globe chamomile or stinknet is an invasive plant only found in a few areas in the US right now, so it will not be on the label for Garlon 4 or any other herbicides at this time. Several articles do recommend using a triclopyr product such as Garlon 4 to control this plant, however. You can read more about this plant in this article. We also recommend contacting your local Cooperative Extension office here for more information on what has been effective in treating this plant in your area.

Q
What is the rate of Garlon 4 per gallon when using the hack and squirt method for tree of heaven?
A

The Garlon 4 Ultra Herbicide label does not recommend the hack and squirt method for any plants. It is best applied as a basal bark spray or as a stump treatment. If you are wishing to not cut the trees down first, you can follow the basal bark spray directions of the product label. If you wish to make hacks in the tree trunk prior to the bark spray you can do this as well. Per the label, it is best used on trunks 6 inches in diameter or less. Trunks with larger diameters should really be cut down to a stump and then applied at the recommended stump treatment rate.
