Details

What is Sucker-Stopper RTU?

Sucker-Stopper RTU is made from the plant growth regulator napthaleneacetate (NAA). This product is widely used in commercial agriculture to prevent suckers and as a thinning agent on fruit trees.

What is Sucker-Stopper RTU used for?

Sucker-Stopper RTU is used to prevent suckers and water sprouts on apples, pears, olives, non-bearing citrus and woody ornamental plants.

Why should I spray my tree?

Many trees produce suckers every spring. Even though you cut them back, the suckers will continue to come back all summer long, which can be very annoying. One application of Sucker-Stopper RTU can prevent this recurrence. Also, after pruning, many trees will put out suckers around the pruning wound. These are very hard to keep under control. One application of Sucker-Stopper RTU after pruning will prevent this. Thoroughly cover the primary wound or where the existing sprouts have been removed. Be sure to treat before new growth suckers are 10 inches in length. The earlier you treat, the better. Control should last about 3 months.

What precautions should I use with Sucker-Stopper RTU?

On bearing trees (apples, pears, olives), do not apply during bloom or fruit set because fruit set reduction may occur. On woody ornamentals, this is not a problem. Do not apply the spray to buds or foliage or injury may occur. Simply apply to the area around the primary wound or to the root suckering area. Be sure to apply before new suckers are 10 inches in length. For additional information see the supplemental label.

What type of packaging does Sucker-Stopper RTU come in?

    Faulty Spray Bottle

    By Alan on 05/09/2013

    Verified Purchase

I can't tell whether the product works. All I can get is a solid stream out of both nozzles. It is pretty hard to cover leaves, cuts and trunks with a nozzle that covers a little area

The product works as advertised, but I can't get motivated enough to apply it again. The sprayer clogs constantly. A real nightmare.

    Really works

    By Parrotmommie on 12/01/2018

My oak tree started sprouting roots that would make their way to the surface in my flowerbed under the tree. Pulling and cutting did not prevent them from growing. This product really works, just spray a little on the newly cut sprout at ground level or a little below ground.

Q
How to apply Sucker Stopper to shoots around base of tree

How do I apply the Sucker Stopper to shoots that have come up around the base of the tree? Do I prune and spray, or just spray the shoots without cutting down? Once treated do they wither away, or will I need to cut down?

A
Many trees produce suckers every spring. Even though you cut them back, the suckers will continue to come back all summer long, which can be very annoying. One application of Sucker-Stopper RTU can prevent this recurrence. Also, after pruning, many trees will put out suckers around the pruning wound. These are very hard to keep under control. As far as visible signs on the shoots, the reactions can vary by hartiness of the shoot and environment surrounding the area.

Q
What is the Timing of Monterey Sucker Stopper RTU application?

Can the suckers be wet at the time of application and do you need to wait a certain period of time before the area gets wet after application -- pending rain or sprinkler system?

A
The best way to apply Monterey Sucker Stopper RTUt to prune the suckers off, spray the cuts with Sucker-Stopper, and they shouldn't return for a year, according to the manufacturer. Or spray the trunk or roots where suckers keep occurring, before new ones sprout. It is ok if the area is a little wet. please follow the product label for application.

Q
Can I use this product on peach, apricot, cherimoya or Asian Pear trees?

I have had a problem with suckers at the base of these trees and bought the product without looking at the details. And is non-bearing citrus a tree with no fruit on at the moment? My lemon always has fruit on it.

A

The only edibles which you can treat with this product are apples, pears, and olives. If your lemon tree has fruit that you intend to consume, then you should not apply this product to it. Per the product label:

"Apple and pear trees, healthy, vigorous and free from stress, may be treated after planting when the trees show established growth. Remove sprouts and follow the application procedures described below. Do not apply to non-established or stressed trees as injury and stand loss will result."

Monterey Sucker Stopper RTU spray bottle shoots only a stream. Is this normal?
A

Monterey Sucker Stopper RTU is only meant to be a spot spray for directly treating shoots so the stream is the best application for this.  Just direct applications to the target issue as directed on the label.
