  • Asked by Loren from Silverhill
    10/23/2018
    Q
If treating for Moths, what is the mixing ratio of Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide per gallon of water if I need to treat a little over 1 acre as a broadcast spray?
    A

Per the product label, Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide is limited to spot treatments ONLY for residential turfgrass, it cannot be sprayed as a broadcast application as you are wanting to do. If treating Sod Webworms (lawn moths), the amount of water will vary depending on the layout of the area, how wet or dry the soil is and also the thickness of the thatch layer. Sod Webworms are beneath the soil surface so it is important to use a sufficient amount of water to get the active ingredient into those areas under the ground surface.

The mix rate is 4.4 to 6 fl oz per 1,000 sq feet. To determine how much water you need, we would suggest doing a “mock” application filling your sprayer with water doing a test run to see how much water it will take to spray 1,000 sq ft. Every yard is different and since you are needing to get the product below the soil surface, it can take 1 gal, 1.5 gal, or 2 gal to thoroughly cover the area, this is why a “mock” application is helpful. Once you determine how much water is needed, then you will use 4.4 to 6 fl oz of Sevin SL Carbaryl with that amount of water to treat a 1,000 sq ft area.

Two alternative recommendations for broadcast treatments would be Talstar P or Talstar XTRA Granules. We recommend these in our Sod Webworm Treatment Guide

Talstar P is a liquid concentrate and will treat for Sod Webworms as a broadcast application and  Per the product label, mix at 0.25 fl oz to 1.0 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft and use the higher rate if grass height is over 1 inch with sufficient water amounts to penetrate the soil. Talstar P can be applied every 30 days for outdoor control.

Talstar XTRA Granules, are labelled to treat Sod Webworms at a rate of 50 to 100 lbs per acre or 1.15 to 2.3lbs per 1,000 sq ft. These granules need to be watered in with ¼ inch of rain or irrigation immediately after applying to active the granule. After the application has dried, the granules will last 2-4 months in the soil.

  • Asked by Bill from Rustburg, Va
    05/24/2019
    Q
How much Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide do I use for my apple tree and how often?
    Japanese beetles
    A

When applying Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide to apples for Japanese beetles you will use 1 ½ to 3 quarts per acre (1 1/8 to 2 1/4 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft). The product label states on apples, avoid use during the period from full bloom until 30 days after full bloom unless fruit thinning is desired. Use during this period also may result in fruit removal. Repeat applications as necessary up to a total of 8 times per crop (including thinning sprays on apples) but not more often than once every 14 days.

    Q
Is Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide a repellent or non-repellent insecticide for ants?
Will this repel ants or will they move thru applications of this insecticide?
    A

Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide  is not considered a “non-repellent”. The insect will contact the treated area and eventually die. If you are looking for a non-repellent, Taurus is a good non-repellent for ants to be applied exterior perimeter of structures.

  • Asked by Doug from Southern Ontario
    04/09/2018
    Q
Does the newly formulated Sevin without carbaryl still cause some thinning of apples?
I have a single red delicious tree and was advised to use Sevin as a post-bloom insecticide to assist in the thinning process particularly in the difficult to reach upper branches. Although Sevin was the brand name suggested, I was actually told to use carbaryl.
    A

Sevin Concentrate used to contain the active ingredient carbaryl, which is sometimes used for chemical thinning of apple trees. However, the new formulation with zeta-cypermethrin does not have that labeling and will not affect thinning. We do carry PROKOz Sevin SL Carbarly Insecticide, which is labeled to be used for apple thinning. We recommend consulting with an arborist before doing this treatment if you have done it before. This article from the Penn State Extension has great information about chemical apple thinning.

    Q
Is it safe to use less than 6 of Sevin SL Carbarly Insecticide per 1,000 sq ft to treat for grubs?
    A

There is a chart on page 6 of the product label for Sevin SL Carbaryl Insecticide that clarifies. You would use the rate of 1.5 - 3 oz per 1,000 sq ft for Green June Beetle larvae or for the adults of scarab beetles such as June beetles, May beetles, and Japanese beetles. For white grubs (such as Japanese beetle larvae), you should use the higher rate of 6 oz per 1,000 sq ft. Keep in mind that this product must be applied when the larvae are feeding near the surface.
