Product Overview

Scythe Herbicide is a post-emergent, nonselective herbicide for the control of grassy and broadleaf weeds, moss, and certain algaes.  Its unique formulation provides a quick burndown of a variety of weeds and grasses as well as most mosses and lichens.  Very mature plants may require repeat applications.  Scythe works by removing the waxy cuticle of green vegetation.  It does not move though the soil so it will not harm nearby plants.  Apply around listed crops, turf, flowers, bedding, and landscaped areas.  Care should be taken to avoid contact with desirable vegetation.  Apply to walks, benches, walls, floors, roofs, or cooling pads for the control of moss and certain algae. A temporary residue may result when used on some types of concrete, masonry, or stone. See label for complete application instructions.

    Trying to eradicate Nostoc

    By Don on 06/15/2020

This product is expensive, but is the only thing I have found to make an impact on Nostoc/Nostoc Commune. That is a land-based algae that is very slippery to drive or walk on. Scythe is "nonselective," so it wipes out everything pretty much. I'd like to find something even more effective against Nostoc in one treatment, but I am not aware of such.

    Scythe Works!!!

    By Chris on 05/15/2017

I have used Scythe on difficult herbaceous invading plants like Knotweed and Houittuynia and it has worked really well. Self-seeding plants need more than one application, but this stuff really works.

Green things call me Mr Death...

    By Tom on 04/25/2017

Nothing can stand up to this! I spray the block patio and green things are yellow before I'm done. You'd think they'd turn yellow just seeing the bottle!

Q
How does Scythe Herbicide compare to Ranger-Pro herbicide?
A

Scythe Herbicide will only control actively growing emerged green vegetation. It provides burndown of both annual and perennial broadleaf and grass weeds, as well as most mosses and other cryptogams. It is labeled to be used in ornamental palnts in landscape and turf. Additional treatments may be required for new emerging weeds.

Ranger Pro has the same active ingredient as Round Up. It is just as effective and is water soluble liquid with surfactant and no additional surfactant is required. It is then absorbed into the soil and breaks down naturally, and therefore will not spread through the ground and kill neighboring plants.

Depending on what you are treating for will depend on what we would recommend for you. If you are treating general weeds in certain areas, we would recommend using Ranger Pro as a spot treatment. It does have the potential to kill a lot of weeds.

Q
Will Scythe Herbicide kill Ivy?

I want to remove the ivy from my back hill, but getting to the main plant (it's over 50 years old) is a problem, I have heard that if I mix Scythe with Round-up it will kill both the ivy leaf and the runners. Is this true? If I can kill it off I can then get to the main plant and tear it out.

A

Scythe Herbicide is not labeled to treat ivy. With English ivy, because it of the waxy leaves, we do recommend a brush killer. It is possible that it could kill the perennials if you are not spraying carefully. You will need to do a spot treatment with Bonide Poison Ivy and Brush Killer. Also, this product is for use on Bluegrass, Fescue, Rye, Bent, Bermuda, Bahia and Zoysia Lawns. Avoid application to St. Augustine or centipede lawns unless injury can be tolerated. Do not spray Carpet grass, Dichondra or desirable clovers. May cause temporary yellowing of some Bermudagrass turf. Do not exceed specified dosages for any area. Be particularly careful applying within the drip line of trees and other ornamental species. Avoid contact with exposed feeder roots of ornamentals and trees.
