You would not need to dig a trench around the tree before applying Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench, the product is just applied around the tree inside the dripline.  Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil.
