Monterey Spurge Power

Monterey Spurge Power is a post-emergence herbicide formulated to control spurge, clover, dandelions, oxalis, creeping Charlie, wild violet, ground ivy, and broadleaf weeds in lawns. Spurge Power can be used in both cool and warm climates, and can help to control hard-to-kill weeds other products may leave behind.

SPURGE POWER is a stable solution containing a mixture of three herbicides. It is for use on residential lawns.

ORNAMENTAL LAWNS

Apply SPURGE POWER at the rate of 1.0 to 1.25 fl. oz. in 2 to 5 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. to control weeds growing in lawn planted to Bluegrass, Fescue, Rye, Bent (excluding golf greens and tees), Bahia, Bermuda, and Zoysia.

When treating warm season lawn that is completely dormant, the higher rates may be used. When treating warm season lawn that is actively growing, use a lower rate. Avoid applications to warm season lawn during transition from dormancy to green-up or green-up to dormancy.

Local conditions may affect the use of this chemical as shown on the label. Consult State Experimental Station or Extension Service weed specialist for specific recommendations for local weed problems and for information on possible lower dosages.

4 of 5 stars  Weed killer
By Matt in madison on 06/19/2016

Well it doesn't kill the grass in my yard it does kill everything else though my problem was clovers and creeping charlie thissels and dandy lions. Knocked them all down after a few applications of little over 3 ounces per gallon spray jug. Recommend 2 ounces per gallon. Anyway it did kill my flowers and other plants I had near so you will have too watch out for the over spray. Otherwise it doesn't work that fast, it takes about 2 days to see them die and then I resprayed in a week. Long story short use approx 4 ounces per gallon and it will do the job it's too bad the product only comes in a small bottle and the other is just too much money. I am from Madison Wi.

5 of 5 stars  Spurge killer

Hey, it works! (But it also kills a tiny bit of grass around it already not drowned out by the spurge). For 2 years I was told by a Nursery that I had to apply a powder mixture that would keep spurge seeds from germinating the following year. It was a joke, I might as well have applied fertilizer to the &%$# spurge. Spurge Power works!

5 of 5 stars  So far so good!
By George in Newnan, Georgia on 06/14/2017

Using to control spurge on centipede. This stuff is killing the spurge with minimal effect on the grass. Every previous year I have watched spurge take over my lawn and nothing else has seemed to affect it. Highly recommend!

5 of 5 stars  wild violets in fescue lawn
By Don in Elon, NC on 06/25/2017

I tried many products and nothing would kill the purple violets taking over my yard. I order Spurge Power and after spraying the violets started to fade. That was 2 weeks ago. I now need to do a small application to get the ones I missed.

3 of 5 stars  helped some
By Rosi in El Paso, Texas on 09/06/2017

After spraying it took close to a week for milkweed (spurge) to start looking wilted. At the same time, my tif-green grass looked pretty bad. In a week to 10 days, the grass started to recover some, but milkweed started to come back in fair amount. I started pulling milkweed manually for several hours almost daily. I'm still pulling some every day, but slowly getting control. I don't think spurge power is that great, it helped some, but without the endless hours that I spent pulling weeds, I would have had the same problem all over again.

  • 5 of 5 stars  Oxalis gone at last
By Chris in Highland on 11/24/2017

Finally a product that got rid of the Oxalis in my grass. I tried other brands and all they did is stress my grass and oxalis was still present. Spurge power left my grass stress free and oxalis is gone. It did take 4 or 5 days before I saw the results of oxalis start to die but it may have been the cooler fall So Cal weather. I highly recommend it for oxalis.

QHow soon after applying Spurge Power can you replant shrubs in same soil?
Want to kill wild violets. What is the optimum temp for best results? do plants need to be actively growing? Zone 6 b

ASpurge Power is a post emergent to be applied to actively growing weeds like Wild Violet. You would want to apply when soil temps reach 55 degrees and not over 85 degrees. Please wait 4 or more weeks after application to replant.

QWill the Spurge Power kill creeping charlie?

ASpurge Power is not labeled to treat creeping charlie.

Fertilome Weed Free Zone would be a good product to use in lawns for creeping charlie.

QI live in Phx… Can I apply Spurge Power when it's 110'. Every spurge killer I have seen has to be applied
under 85'. Is that the case with Spurge Power? Thank you

A

You would want to apply Spurge Power when soil temps are not over 85 degrees.  This is because plants that are heat stressed will not absorb the product as readily so it would not work very well.  If you can apply it later in the day when temps could be closer to the recommended temp you could do so.

QWill Spurge power kill vetch? White oak trees?

ASpurge Power is labeled to control vetch in lawns.  If the tree is established, then the Spurge Power should have no effect on the tree. You should try to limit the exposure to the tree and only directly treat the vegetation you are trying to get rid of.

QWhat is the solution to eradicate an infestation of Fluminensis/ Wandering Jew?
I have applied a super strong solution of glyphosate weed killer numerous times with no success. Exposed vegetation dies off but quickly regrows. Please advise on a solution.

A

Glyphosate alone does not always control wandering Jew/Spiderwort/tradescantia because it can reroot easily if any plant fragments are left in the area. We would recommend a product that contains triclopyr such as Monterey Spurge Power for more complete kill on this plant. Cultural practices such as removing all plant litter and bringing native plants into the area to better compete will also help to eradicate this plant.

QIs Monterey Spurge Power made to be sprayed right into the grass and the grass won't be harmed?
I have a mixture of grasses but mostly Bermuda.

A

Monterey Spurge Power  is applied at 1.0 to 1.25 fl. oz. in 2 gallons to 5 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. to control weeds growing in lawn planted to Bluegrass, Fescue, Rye, Bent (excluding golf greens and tees), Bahia, Bermuda, and Zoysia.

QWill a strong application of Monterey Spurge Power to burn my grass?
I made my application too strong and I have burn spots in my lawn. Have I killed the grass in those spots or will it come back?

A

Yes, if you sprayed Monterey Spurge Power too strong more than likely it has killed the grass in the spots that you're seeing.  You can water the area if the application wasn't done too long ago, especially the burned spots and see if that helps any grass to regrow or wait 3 to 4 weeks after the application was made and reseed.

QHow long should I wait for second application of Monterey Spurge Power?
I sprayed on few dense patches of creeping wood sorrel in my lawn about a week ago. It's getting browning but they are still alive. Also I see some new green leaves between the brown ones. I want to treat as soon as possible.

A

Monterey Spurge Power can take time to kill treated weeds.  It should not be applied be more than twice a year with an interval of 21 days between applications.

QIs Monterey Spurge Power the right product to kill creeping charlie without killing the grass?
We live in upstate NY. Have tried using round up weed killer for lawns and weed be gone with no success. This crazy weed just keeps spreading.

A

Yes, Monterey Spurge Power is labeled for creeping charlie in both warm and cool season grasses. You would use it at a rate of 1 - 1.25 fl oz per 2 - 5 gallons of water per 1000 sq ft. Local conditions may affect the use of this chemical as shown on the product label. We recommend you consult State Experimental Station or Extension Service weed specialist for specific recommendations for local weed problems and for information on possible lower dosages.

QWill Monterey Spurge Power harm or kill myoporum davis ground cover?
I have 2 year old myoporum davis ground cover that has a few weeds inside.

A

Monterey Spurge Power should not be used on desirable groundcover or other ornamentals since it will likely cause damage to these plants. If you have grassy weeds in the myoporum, then you could use Fertilome Over The Top II Grass Killer to control the grassy weeds. If it is a large area, then you could also use a pre-emergent around the established ground cover, such as Snapshot.

QCan you use Monterey Spurge Power as a broad spray or must it be spot applied to plants?
Is late October a good time to apply? What pre emergent do you recommend?

A

Monterey Spurge Power can be applied as a broadcast as long as your turf is tolerant to it. October would be a good time to apply, as long as the weeds are actively growing and temps are above 55 degrees. Pre-emergent application depends on what type of turf you have and what you are aiming to treat. Please visit our Lawn Care Guide for more information.

QDo you have an equivalent product(s) to MCPA Ester and Vanquish?
Tru Green used MCPA Ester plus Vanquish on my St Augustine lawn.

A

Both Dicamba and MCPA are active ingredients found in many products, however many of these may cause damage to St. Augustine grass. A good choice that contains both would be Monterey Spurge Power, which can be used as spot treatment on St. Augustine lawns since it may cause some discoloration. Be sure to read and follow the product label to be sure that it will suit your needs. Another option is Speedzone Southern Herbicide, which also contains two additional active ingredients and is a formula that may be more gentle on your turf, or Trimec Southern Broadleaf Hervbicide. Be sure that your target weeds are on the product label of the herbicide that you choose to apply.

QDoes Spurge Power damage St. Augustine grass?
I am attempting to get rid or wood sorrel.

ANo, Spurge Power is labeled to be used on St. Augustine grass. Per the product label, they do not recommend broadcasting this product when air temperatures are over 80 degrees F. They recommend only spot treating when temperatures are over 80 degrees F.
